(COORD.), with the whole Staff of the European Soil Bureau - EU - Joint Research Centre, ISPRA (Va), Italy and INRA - Orleans, Olivet, France (General co-ordination : C. LE BAS). 17 th World Congress of Soil Science Bangkok, Thailand, 14 - 21 August 2002 Thematic uses are in development based on a set of pedotransfer rules and concern erosion risk assessment, heavy metals contamination, organic carbon content, environmental constraints to crop production, environmental protection. Co-ordination and harmonisation with different world programmes of soil survey from international organisations are foreseen. For example, a 1:5 M SOTER data base for Europe is in preparation. The aim of the European Soil Bureau is now to obtain progressively a nested Soil Information System going from the world-wide programmes to more detailed regional and local ones. This 1:1 M Soil Geographical Data Base appears to be the only harmonized soil data base at continental scale. It should help improving the management of soil resources and promoting sustainability in that part of the world. Context This programme was developed in the framework of the European Soil Information System (EUSIS) managed by the European Soil Bureau of the European Union. The Geographical Data Base, coming originally from the Soil Map of the European Communities published in 1985, was progressively improved and extended spatially, with the help of contributing countries. The data sets are managed within a Geographical Information System, including a related soil analytical database. Its last extension concerns Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries. We present here its present state of progress. To help countries in giving data to that programme, the general organisation of the database is explained in an "Instructions Guide for the elaboration of the Soil Geographical Database of Eurasia and Mediterranean countries at 1:1 M", recently published by the European Soil Bureau. Thematic uses are in development based on a set of pedotransfer rules and concern erosion risk assessment, heavy metals contamination, organic carbon content, environmental constraints to crop production, environmental protection.Co-ordination and harmonisation with different world programmes of soil survey from international organisations are foreseen.
