LETTER FROM THE DISTRICT SUPERIOR

Following Bishop Fellay’s Confirmation visit to Ireland on 27th-28th April, His Lordship paid a visit to Liverpool a month later, with faithful travelling from Tyneside and Scotland for the occasion. The pontifical blessing ofour new church dedicated to SS Peter and Paul went ahead

as planned on 1st June in spite of the having to convert the premises from a building site to a furnished church in a matter of a couple of days. Many thanks to all those who made this possible. About 130 faithful were in attendance for the blessing, the Confirmations and the High Mass at the Throne. The handsome church hall below the church, which has a capacity for about 200 people, was the venue for the buffet lunch and the bishop’s conference which was well attended. The next day some three hundred faithful attended the Pontifical Mass at the Faldstool in Burghclere. The many families present were able to enjoy outdoor picnics under a sunny blue sky and about one hundred faithful then stayed on to hear the Superior General’s talk. I hope to include the transcripts of the important sections of these conferences in a forthcoming Mater Dei. Meanwhile, and with regard to the Doctrinal Declaration text of April 2012, it is important to know that Bishop Fel-

lay stated publicly in Ireland and Britain that he not merely withdrew the document, but that he renounced it. “I said to Rome, ‘I renounce this text; I no longer want to use it as a basis for any discussions, now or in the future.’” New appointments The month of August marks the time in the Society when new assign-ments take place, and so it is that a number of changes will affect this District. The out-going Fathers concerned have generously accepted their new appointments. They concern Fathers Paul Kimball, David Sherry, Matthew Clifton and Paul Bierer.

Bristol: Father Paul Kimball is named to Johannesburg, South Af-rica, and is to be replaced by Father Philippe Pazat from Kenya, but of Spanish nationality. We thank Fr Kimball for his years of ministry as Prior of St Saviour’s House and for all the re-treats he has preached there. Father will be remembered for de-votion to Our Lady of Quito and Garcia Moreno, as well as his monumental translation into English of St Thomas Aquinas’ Commentary on Saint Matthew’s Gospel.

Athlone: Father David Sherry is appointed headmaster of the Soci-ety’s new academy in Ontario, Canada, and will be replaced by Father Edward MacDonald from Johannesburg, but of Ameri-can nationality, (who knows Ireland well having been stationed here previously). Father Sherry has been with us since his ordi-nation in 2007, stationed first in London and then in Carluke, and most recently as Prior in Athlone. We are grateful for his cheerful and generous dedication to the apostolate and for many and varied responsibilities and activities he has success-fully undertaken.

Carluke (55.5 degrees latitude): Father Matthew Clifton meanwhile is heading south…but also to Canada, where he is looking for-ward to assisting Fr Leo Boyle in the growing school and par-ish of Calgary (51 degrees latitude) after having spent two memorable years in Scotland. We are confident that he will keep up the good fight in his new assignment and look forward to seeing him again at the occasion of his annual leave home.

Dun Laoghaire: Father Paul Bierer has already taken up a new posting at Montgardin in France – at least for the interim – fol-lowing the sudden death there of Father Dominique Lagneau SSPX from a heart attack. Meanwhile, whilst the Sunday

Masses in Newry and Belfast are being assured by the Fathers from Carluke and Bristol, the local faithful are obviously miss-ing their own resident priest; Father Bierer had been there for some ten years and we are grateful for all his good works and undertakings. So it is that I shall be transferring Father Francis Gallagher from Athlone to St John’s, Dun Laoghaire, along with Brother Gerard, as of the third week of August, God will-ing.

Whilst realising that it is always a sacrifice to ‘loose’ esteemed clergy and colleagues, please remember that such unsolicited changes are not infrequently required for the Society’s wider good and are part and parcel of life in an apostolic or missionary congregation. As a consequence of the changes listed above, a number of further ‘internal’ appointments have become necessary hence:

Father Anthony Wingerden will replace Father Clifton in Carluke Father Francis Ockerse, from Canada, but of South African nation-

ality, will replace Fr Wingerden in Bristol Father Giacomo Ballini will replace Fr Gallagher in Athlone Father Vianney Vandendaele will replace Father Ballini in Preston Newly ordained Father Lawrence Barrett of Post Falls, USA, will

replace Father Vandendaele in London. The only place to ‘escape’ a change is St Michael’s School, which, ironically, had been destined to receive an extra priest this summer, as repeatedly requested these last few years…Maybe we shall be obliged to wait two more years until the next ordinations of our home-grown candidates to the Priesthood! Obviously two months is a long time in the life of the Society and we shall see if all this comes to pass as announced…in any event we ex-tend a warm welcome to the newcomers, a fond farewell to those de-parting, our good wishes to those being relocated within the District, and to all, and to all the assurance of our prayers. Canterbury pilgrimage and collection Please note the details of the Canterbury pilgrimage as found else-where in this newsletter. There will be a special collection towards this important event on the second Sunday of July around the country. Walsingham pilgrimage The pilgrimage will take place over the weekend 31stAugust-1st Sep-tember following the usual format.

Change of Mass times Please note that the times of the Sunday Masses in the following places are now at the revised times of: 0900 in Manchester, and 1230 in Liverpool. Also, for the months of July and August, please note that there will only be one Sunday Mass at St Michael’s School at 0830. NB it is not possible to have a Sunday Mass in Oxford on Sunday 11th August due to a shortage of priests that day. Recollection for married couples Father Nicholas-Mary CSSR will be preaching a three-day recollection at St Saviour’s House, Bristol for married couples from 11th-13th July. Father Karl Stehlin in Norway Father Stehlin kindly visited our chapel in Oslo again from 14th-16th June in order to preach a Marian recollection for the benefit of our Pol-ish faithful there. Clothing Ceremonies in Velletri Having mentioned in the previous newsletter the Religious Clothing of an Old-Michaelian, Miss Stephanie Martin, in May of this year, in Vel-letri near Rome, may I belatedly announce also the Clothing of Miss Adele Farrell of Cork, which took place the previous month in the same Convent of the Cenacle Sisters! Our congratulations and prayers go to both Sister Bridget of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Farrell) and to Sister Maria Magdalena of the Holy Face (Martin). Whilst the families of both novices were present for the happy occasion, it was lovely that former class-mates from St Mi-chael’s School could make the trip also and provide the nuptial veil for the ceremony which had been used in two of their own weddings.

With every good wish and blessing in Jesus and Mary,

Father Paul Morgan Superior

“The Recusant” “The Recusant” presents itself ‘as an unofficial SSPX newsletter, fighting a guerrilla war for the soul of Tradi-tion.’ This ‘guerrilla war’ is now coming out into the open in that a signed ‘Letter of Entreaty’ has appeared on its website which attacks the Society in no uncertain terms. Addressed to ‘Fr Morgan and the Clergy of the British Dis-trict,’ the open letter, dated 21st May 2013, accuses the Society of having deviated from its essential mission of fidelity to Catholic Tradition and opposition to Modernism due to the betrayal of its liberal leadership! Ignoring the fact that there has not been a false deal with modernist Rome, and in spite of Bishop Fellay’s public withdrawal in Ireland of the questionable April 2012 ‘Doctrinal Declaration,’ the dialectical letter pretends there is no option for us now but to show true leadership and to follow its proponents in seceding from the Society! In recent months, such as in his last Letter to Friends and Benefactors and his recent conferences in Ireland, Bishop Fellay has clarified that he does not accept the legitimacy of the New Mass nor the errors of Vatican II nor the ‘hermeneutic of continuity’ which pretends to reconcile them with Tradition. With regard to the ‘Letter of Entreaty,’ Bishop Fellay has stated that ‘the paragraph which pretends to prove every-thing, that is of “my April (2012) declaration,” is wrong and false from the beginning to end; there is not one phrase which presents correctly what I have written…Poor people who are so misled by their mistrust.’ Hence, rather than boycotting the Superior General’s forthcoming visit, I would urge the concerned individuals in particular to at-tend Bishop Fellay’s conferences and to consider carefully

what he has to say. Whilst acknowledging the serious issues surrounding the Society’s negotiations with the Roman authori-ties, it is excessive and indeed offensive to claim ‘that the SSPX is now a sinking ship’ which is beyond repair. Far from abandoning the legacy of Archbishop Lefebvre, we need staunch clergy and faithful to help keep the Society faithful to its providential mission, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us!

Saint Pius X, pray for us! Father Paul Morgan 27th May 2013

COST: £20 per person including children over 5 years. Pilgrims will be issued with a token, upon receipt of payment, which will allow them access to all the campsite facilities. It is therefore essential to settle the fees imme-diately upon arrival at the pilgrimage. SUPERVISION OF YOUNG PILGRIMS: Pilgrims under the age of 16 MUST have an adult responsible for them. DRESS: Pilgrims are requested to observe the usual standards of Christian modesty – no trousers for women - having regard to practical conditions and common sense. CARS: Please do not bring cars to the pilgrimage except in cases of abso-lute necessity. GADGETS: A pilgrimage is rather like a retreat and hence in order to assist recollection you are requested to leave all unnecessary gadgets at home. REFRESHMENTS: Water will be provided at intervals during the day. Wine will be provided at a modest price in the evenings. Pilgrims are re-quested not to bring their own supplies of alcohol in order to preserve the spirit of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims are also requested not to visit local pub-lic houses. CURFEWS: In order to maintain the true spirit of the pilgrimage it is im-portant that everyone retires to bed by 11pm. This will not only ensure good order but also will facilitate the clearing up of the campsites. Non-compliance could result in exclusion from the pilgrimage. HELPERS: We appreciate all offers of help. However we would prefer as many people as possible to walk the pilgrimage and would be grateful if the campsites were left to the organisers to carry out their tasks unimpeded by well-meaning non-walkers.

THIRD ORDER NEWSLETTER

(The Spiritual Life – A Challenge to Layfolk, Denis O. Feeny, C.T.S. Do 318)

Chapter 2. The Nature of Virtue.

WHAT then are virtues? Natural virtues are good habits acquired through frequently performing acts which make it easy to go on doing such things. All men, whether Christian, non-Christian, or pagan, can acquire prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance and with the help of God's natural action on their behalf, gradually perfect these acquired natural virtues. Catholics, how-ever, have to practise more than natural virtue; they have to practise it on a supernatural plane; they have to practise infused virtues, that is those virtues which are received into the soul at Baptism; they are supernatural habits which give the power of performing supernatural acts of Faith, Hope, Char-ity, Prudence, etc; these must be developed through diligent, patient effort, with, of course, the help of God's grace; they may not so develop but remain dormant - it is up to the person concerned to make the necessary effort and co-operate with grace. One of the chief differences between the practice of natural and supernatural infused virtue is the motive behind it – why are we doing this or that good deed? Is it for a human or material or selfish motive such as hope of return or reward, desire for honour or esteem from men, desire for our own comfort or convenience? Or are we doing it for a supernatural motive – to please God or out of love or fear of Him? Unless it is the latter, we are being no different from pagans and non-believers who cannot of course be expected to have motives other than natural or human ones. We Catholics are raised to a level or state above this – the supernatural state. We have only one destiny – Heaven and the sight of God for all eternity, i.e. the Beatific Vision. We move towards it by acts done under the influence of supernatural principles and for supernatural motives. As our aim is a supernatural one, so the acts which lead to it must be supernatural. Thus the Christian moral virtues (infused virtues) are essentially distinct from the highest of acquired moral virtues (natural virtues) such as may be described by the greatest philoso-phers. For example, Aristotle wrote about Temperance as being a reasonable thing; his conception of that virtue is infinitely below the Christian virtue of Temperance which is the fruit of divine faith and is governed by supernatu-ral prudence.

Page 33: SOCIETY OF ST PIUS X - sspx.co.uksspx.co.uk/newsletter_2013_4_julaug.pdf · St Michael’s House Tel: 01635 253 209 Sr Mary Elizabeth Andover Road, Fax: 01635 255 ... Alfreton Derbys,

33

Of course, our motives are bound to be impure and mixed and largely human when we first start to practise a supernatural virtue. Some Catholics for this very reason give up because they think they are not being sincere and genuine. But if they would but persevere, their motive would gradually be purified as the years went on; it would probably never become completely pure; this belongs only to the Saints – the process of sanctification of our souls is not a matter of a day or year, but is a whole life's work. As this matter of motive is so important, it is best, in the initial stages, to express it in words in a short ejaculatory prayer such as – “This for you, Lord” – the shorter the better. When the practice of a virtue has become a habit, there is no longer the need to express our motive in words or in a conscious manner; we just know at the back of our mind why we are doing the act which in itself becomes a prayer. Clearly a Christian who practises a virtue must be prepared to do so in all circum-stances and towards all people whether he likes or dislikes them. Here again is a big difference between the Christian and non-Christian approach. Can we imagine a pagan being kind or patient to an enemy or to someone who is not his friend unless he has a selfish or ulterior motive? But the Christian must, to please God and with the help of His grace, try to do this. He must be prepared to gain little or nothing from a worldly point of view, indeed even sometimes to lose by it; his eyes must always be on God and the reward he looks for is a heavenly one. He must be con-stantly acting against his feelings and controlling them. For instance, he meets someone he does not like and his whole inclination is to ignore or pass him by – instead, he forces himself to be agreeable, even with a smile. Or again, someone is rude to him or does him an injustice; he controls the feeling of indignation which rises in him and says nothing even though he knows that this may appear weak from a worldly point of view; he may even go further and make a prayer of the trial by accepting it and offering up the hurt he feels for the person who has injured him, thus fulfilling Christ's injunction to return good for evil. All this is quite impossible to nature; it is supernatural and made possible only by grace. It also requires great faith – faith that God does actually see and will reward such acts of virtue, for no-body in his senses will do deeds which may cause him loss or about which nobody except God will ever know unless he is sure of his faith. This virtue, as we know from the catechism, is a gift from God; therefore, if we wish for it, or an increase in it, we must constantly ask for this in our prayers; we must make frequent acts of faith, read about people who have or had great faith, talk to those who have it in larger measure than we have. In these ways, we can increase in the virtue which – with Humility – forms the foundation on which all the other virtues are built. It must be understood that virtues are not ends in themselves (that would be a pagan and natural point of view which the Stoics of ancient Greece held); they are means to an end which is to give honour and glory to God. In the process of fulfilling this end we achieve a secondary one, namely our own fulfilment, maturity and happiness. [TO BE CONTINUED]

Archconfraternity of St. Stephen Summer Camp

“To serve at the altar… is next to the Priesthood the highest privi-

lege which a layman can enjoy.” The SSPX Great Britain and Ireland District proposes for the Mem-bers of the Achconfraternity of St. Stephen, who are more than 15 years old, a Pilgrimage to the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles and the sepulchre of the Patron of the Guild, a Summer Camp in Italy, from the 29th of July to the 10th of August 2013.The first week (29th July- 3rd August) will be spent in Rome accomplishing the Pilgrim-age of the seven Basilicas and visiting Churches and monuments of the eternal City. The second part (3rd – 10th August) of the Camp will be in Florence with visits to places of religious interest. The first and foremost goal or object of the Guild is supernatural: to sanctify the server. The close attention to the various details of serv-ing , especially in regards to adhering to the Church’s decrees on the various rubrics , ultimately has a supernatural end. As these details serve as a spiritual means of discipline, these natural actions of the server are then raised to the supernatural plane, which in turn serve as a means of sanctification.

39

This is why the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the liturgy of the Church will be the centre of our days.

NEWSLETTER FOR THE ARCHCONFRATERNITY OF ST STEPHEN

SERVERS’ CORNER Some years ago a visit to a particular church in Rome lasted rather longer than expected as a semi-narian colleague and I managed to get ourselves locked behind the iron grills which separated a side chapel from the nave. Those familiar with the Roman practice of sacristans’ locking up churches, in whole or in part, during the afternoon siesta, will appreciate the fact that it was not a short term affair…although at the time we were more concerned by the attentions of the bemused tourists who peered into our enclosure from the main body of the church, no doubt wondering as to the reasons behind our incarceration…This an-ecdote serves as an introduction to the topic of another sort of ‘fencing’ found in churches...

...Altar rails are a set of railings, sometimes ornate and frequently of marble or wood, delimiting the chancel or choir in a church, the part of the sanctuary that contains the altar. A gate at the centre divides the line into two parts. The sanctuary is a figure of heaven, into which entry is not guaranteed! Hence the sanctuary gates are to be kept closed unless in use. The railing which guards the sanctuary and separates the latter from the body of the church is also called the communion-rail as the faithful kneel at it when receiving Holy Communion. It is made of carved wood, metal, marble, or other precious material; it should be a convenient height so that people can kneel at it to receive Holy Communion (about two feet six inches high). The "Rituale Romanum" (tit. iv, cap. ii, n. I) prescribes that a clean cloth of white linen be extended before those who receive Holy Communion, and this may hang from the communion rail on the altar side Barriers of various kinds often mark off sacred the area of a church close to the altar, which is largely reserved for ordained clergy and servers. In the Ar-menian Church curtains are drawn to cut off that area during the holiest mo-ments of the liturgy. In Eastern Orthodox and related rites, this evolved into a solid, icon-clad screen, called the iconostasis that has three doorways which usually have doors and curtains that can be closed or drawn aside at various times. Western Europe had its more transparent Gothic rood screens and the smaller more economical altar rails.
