7MADÉ SENI ANTARI, 19, lives in an Indonesian village, where a typical 19 year old girl would likely be working as a housekeeper for a wealthier family cleaning, cooking and looking after children and livestock from morning until night. Within 5 years she would most likely marry and leave her parents’ house to live in her husband’s family compound, along with his extended family – parents, brothers, uncles, grandparents, nieces and nephews. In small villages in the developing world there are not many career opportunities, especially for girls. But today, Madé is an articulate, bright 3rd year student at a Teachers College. She is in the top 10% of her class and has big dreams earning a Master's Degree and becoming a university professor. Those are big goals for a girl from a small village whose parents have no land and not even steady work. And the reason for this bright future is that Madé has an ‘angel’ partner (kind of like an angel investor) – Social Gem made a commitment to sponsor her education and her living costs so she can fulfill her potential and become an example to other young girls in other small villages.
