Mayors receive assurance TriCityis not on refugee resettlement list

During a conference call with representatives of U.S. Sens.Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen, the mayors of Dover,Rochester and Somersworth were assured there are noplans by the U.S. Department of State to relocateinternational refugees to the communities of the TriCity.

Dover Mayor Karen Weston, Rochester Mayor T.J. Jeanand Somersworth Mayor Dana Hilliard first expressedconcern last year after the Organization for Refugee andImmigrant Success (ORIS), an agency that assists the U.S.Department of State in identifying suitable communities forrefugee relocation, indicated the TriCity was beingevaluated as a possible destination for refugees. After thethree mayors conveyed their concerns about the fiscalimpact of the program on local taxpayers, ORIS stated itwas premature to discuss resettlement in the TriCityregion, and there were no plans to proceed without TriCitysupport.

Dover Mayor Karen Weston repeated those concerns torepresentatives from the offices of U.S. Sens. Ayotte andShaheen during a Dover City Council workshop inDecember.

The conference call this week was in response to a pledgeby the three TriCity mayors to follow up on the matter withthe New Hampshire Congressional delegation.

Representatives of Sens. Ayotte and Shaheen reiterated tothe three mayors this week there are no plans by the U.S.Department of State to relocate refugees to the TriCity aspart of the Reception and Placement Program. Therepresentatives said the process of selecting a communityor region is long and involved, and does not proceedwithout extensive feedback from potentially affectedcommunities.
