This year I undertook a

mission to connect with as

many Lamont's as I could, from lapsed members tosearching out new members.

I set of; iq February for Australia, landing inMelbourne and staying with o1d friend DamianDownie, past President ofAustralia, and connectingwith Roderick McPherson, an avid Lamont researcherwho attended our gathering this year and has beenadmitted to our clan council and will be the offrcialhistorian.

Onwards up the centre of the country to Tumutand A1bury country towns where I have relatives arrdmore Lamont's.

Then on to Sydney. u here I caughl up with moreLamont's who had lapsed and then our chief PeterLamont. I have met with Peter a few times.

Out to Alice Springs to meet Janelle White, an

Anthropologist who works with Aboriginal people,Janelle came to t}re 2017 gathbring and we becamefriends. She took me to places ordinary tourists wouldnot see. We even swam in a sacred Aboriginalwaterhole.

June to London to meet Australian Lamont'sover for the cricket world cup'

July to France, to a town called Aubingy, to meetwith Charles and Aurelle Lamant from Paris. Aubigryhosts a three day festival to mark *The Auld Alli-ance". This is a huge festival with hundreds of Scot-tish people and pipe bands attending. We set to work, setting up our Lamont tent in the clan village. After dismissal, we all walked to the Scots pubin the square for lunch.

Within the arch at the gate are inscribed 54,000names ofsoldiers who died and have no known grave.

A poignant reminder of the tenible waste of life.During lunch we had a light hearted ceremony

of installing our Lamont plaque on the wall beside al1

the other clan piaques.

Another special ceremony is to honour a per-son from a clan. This year it was Clan.Mackinnon,

We heard the life story of private CharlesMackinnon buried in Lij ssenthoek military cemeteryin Poperinge, the second largest in Belgium, whichholds 10,122 casualties. A wreath was laid by a rela-tive. Next year it is to be Clan Lamont so some re-searching needs to be done,

During this war a casualty clearing station andfield hospital were nearby and by 1917 had 4,000beds so it was that most buried here died of theirwounds or other complications like pneumonia.

A brave young nurse called Nellie Spindler fromQueen Alexandria's nursing service is buried here.Elizabeth Maclean of clan Maclean laid a small cross.

a moving gesture.

Lijssenthoek Military Cemeteryin Poperinge,

On the Sunday, in the company ofElizabeth andAllan Maclean and with Tom Hay as our guide, wevisited the Flanders Museum in the market squarededicated to the story of the i 't world war, a modemand interesting museum.

A few miles further on at Zonnebeke wasPasschendaele Memorial Museum which tells thestory of the five battles ofYpres.

It has many exhibits, paintings and uniforms ofthe various armies and re-created trenches.

It really makes one think of the tenible condi-tions our soldiers suffered.

All too soon, the aftemoon was over and Tomhad to go home to Brussels.

In the evening, I met with Rudy Lamond fromYpres, who attended the Saturday proceedings withhis extended family, whom I thank for their suppoft.Rudy took me to more important sites all very inter-esting. Unfortunately, the rain was so hear.y we couid

only view from the car. Later we went to Rudy's homefor dinner, prepared by his lovely wife Kristen, andmet his daughters. His son Luca led us in the parade.

Such a iovely family. I look forward to my next visitin January.

Monday Rudy drove me to the airport in Brus-sels " where would I be without the Lamonds"

shannq of the Stewdrts' part in it.

The Stewart dynasty descended from King Robert l's daughter and her husband, Walterthe Steward. Despite early unrest and weak government caused by several Stewart kings suc-ceeding as minors, the dynasty flourished for over three centuries.

During this time, Scotland moved fonvard to become a modern and prosperous natioh.Stewart monarchs such as King James lV and Vl were Renaissance patrons of artistic, scien-tific, commercial, religious and political endeavour, sponsoring figures including the poet, Rob-ert Henryson, and humanist, George Buchanan,

Also of significance was the arrival in the mid-sixteenth century of the Reformation move-ment, bringing about the replacement of Catholic Mary Queen of Scots by her son King James Vl.

It was through the Stewart dynasty that the two thrones of England and Scotland - and laterthe governments - came to be united.

The 'Marriage of the Thistle and the Rose'took place at Stirling Castle in 1503 betweenKing James lV and Princess Margaret Tudor, daughter of King Henry Vll of England.

This union of the Scottish and English Royal families eventually led in 1603 to the succes-sion of a Stewart (now with a change of spelling) to the throne of England.

acebook has increasingly become one ofthe most effective tools for research. Thistrack record for oroven success has re-

sulted in consistent growth ofFacebook groups dedi-cated to genealogy. These groups cover a wide spec-trum of purposes. There are Facebook groups forgenealogy related technology, ge-nealogy software, genealogyscrapbooking, geographical areas,

and groups for genealogy resourceand information sharing. The mostbeneficial benefit is the large com-munity of genealogists willing toshare their knowledge, experience, tips, and encouragement. More po-tentially important than the informa-tion, however, are the very real re-lationships that can be cultivatedwith the people you meet there.

Here are some examples ofsituations where Facebook can di-rectly impact research. Using a

Facebook group to help solve yourmost frustrating brick wall questionis like posting the problem on a platform that poten-tially thousands ofpeople searching the same issuecould respond and offer assistance. Maybe you foundor inherited some old family letters in a different lan-guage or photographs or pictures without any iden-tification. There are groups devoted to translationsand photograph identification where it's possiblesomeone will be able to help.

Additional examples ofbenefits include the fo1-

lowing:1. Communities are categorized by geographi-

cal area and reach all over the worid.2. Communities focused on technology are es-

sential for keeping up with the latest tech gadgets, apps, software, scanners for digitizing family pho-tos, etc.

3. Blogs cover a wide variety ofresearch topicsand opportunities for sharingideas and.resources. Maly arehosted by professional in thefield of genealogical research.

5. Groups for DNA analy-sis can assisl you with yourDNA test results and how toproceed.

6. Specialized groups ex-ist for a.11 ethnic groups. Examples include Jewish,African-American, Native American, etc.

7. Specialized groups also exist for specialized

possible in a digita.l format that can be accessible toeverybody.

Beyond 2022 director, Dr. Peter Crooks, saidthe scale ofcopies and dupiicates identified in otherarchives already is "astounding".

Five institutions are involved in the project: theNational Archives, the UK national archives, the pub-lic records offrce in Northem Ireland. the Irish Maau-scripts Collection and the library at Trinity CollegeDublin (TCD).

"We are committed to produciirg 50 millionwords of searchable material by 2022 and that is pos-sible with the artificial intelligence we are using," hesaid.

"Tens ofthousands ofpapers will be digitised, but they will also be searchable, which is a change. We will be able to mine this information for individualnames."

Three hundred bundles of documents which

were retrieved from the fire and locked away for thelast century in the National Archives have alreadybeen retrieved.

Some ofthese records date back to the 14fr and15th centuries. They also include a lottery ticket from1797 issued to raise money for the short-livedGrattan's Parliament.

At least 200 volumes of transcripts fordigitisation have been identified in archives in Ire-1and, the UK and the United States.

These are mostly State papers from the late 136

century up to 1922. "We need to find these manu-scripts ard connect them together digitally. Theserecords were copied in the early 19h century exten-sively so it is possible to word search them," DrCrooks said.

One ofthese books is the record ofthe rolls ofchancery going back to the middle ages.

Beyond 2022 has been running for three years

and today Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will announce allrther €2.5 million for the second phase ofthe proj ectthrough the Department of Culture, Heritage and theGaeitacht's Project Ireland 2040 fund.

The second phase will invite the public to be-come involved in identifling documents which mightbe in duplicate form - for instance, the Church ofIreland parish records which were destroyed in thefire.

Speaking at Dublin Castle, Mr Varadkaremphasised that the project will be an all-island oneand will leave a "permanent, meaningful and imagi-native legacybeyond the conciusion ofthe decade ofcentenaries".

Shanahan, at tlre taping of The Ed Sullivan Show. They married six months later in October. They

traveled to Munich, Germany, where he was assignedfor duty, and where their three children were bom.

The family also lived in Niagara Falls and Roch-ester, New York, Montgomery (Maxwell AFB), A1a-

bama. Col. Bell was assigned back to Wiesbaden,Germany, where Mrs. Bell accompanied her husbandon many diplomatic tours of Europe while he net-worked with intelligence personnel ofvarious friendlycountries.

He was reassigned to Montgomery Alabamaand, upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1975,the family moved to Riverside, Califomia.

Colonel Bell was in-vested as a Knight Templar in1989 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Knights Templar up-hold the ageless ideals ofChiv-aIry and Christian religiouscommitment and protection.

Crusade historical re-search, and fighting today'senemies of society, namely dis-ease and social distress, tlrough charitable efforts aldfundraising are just some oftheir activivities.

He rose to the rank ofBailffof the Knights Templar of North America.

Family was most important to him and he madecountless sacrifices because ofhis love for them. Billwas a loving husband and hands-on father. Suzanneand Bill attended every event, game, gymkhana, pa-rade, p1ay, recital and talent show in which their chil-dren participated

There were family excursions and road trips inEurope and the U.S.A. and so many adventures tell-ing them would fi1l a tome in and of itselfl

Their three children deeply admired, adored andrespected both of their loving parents.

His love of family extended not just to his im-mediate family but his ancestral family as well.

He was very proud of his Scottish roots. Be-cause ofhis decades of research, in 1983, Clan Bellwas once again recognized by the Lyon Court in Scot-

land as a C1an.

The Clan tartan was destroyed by the Englishlong ago so Bill (with Bob Martin) designed a tartanfor the Clan in early 1984.

The tartan is recognized by the Scottish Regis-ter ofTartans and registered with the Society ofAn-tiquities of Scotland.

For several decades Colonel Bell served as

President of Clan Bell Intemational which later be-came Clan Be1l, North America. He was PresidentEmeritus ofClar Bell, North America.

He spent much his retired life hacing his familygenealogy deep into the past, recently uncovering aconnection for which he had long been searching.

InAugust 2013, after thedeath ofhis wife, Colonel Bellmoved from Riverside, Cali-fomia, to Rio Rancho, NewMexico. There he recon-nected with ftiends from "theold days," particularly hisSigma Chi brothers.

A lifeJong Sigma Chi,Colonel Bell assisted in revi-talizing the Alumnr organtza-tion. He seryed as Secretary-Treasurer for the Sigma ChiAlumni Chapter of NewMexico for several years.

Always the epitome and the finest example of agentleman, everyone loved Bi1l. He was quick witha joke or a kind word. He formed friendships thatlasted a lifetime. So many people looked up to himyet he was humble. Though he did not think ofhim-self as one, he was a true hero,

Above all other pursuits, Bill loved flying. Inhis time he had eqj oyed footbal1, golf, tennis and bowl-ing and other physical games.

He particularly enjoyed reading both fiction andnof:flction. He loved music and listened to manygenres including Russian music, classical guitars, 40'sand country and westem. He also very much en-joyed watching films, particularly war films, docu-mentaries, westems and romartic comedies.

The Lady Buchanan

Things are now hotting up with respect to theInaugwation of Mike as the first Chief of the ClanBuchanan in over 350 years !

Clan members from around the world are get-ting together to create a once in a lifetime event atCambusmore near Callander, Scotland on 171h - 191h

October 2020.Not only is this the first ever such event for our

clan in so manyyears, it is possiblythe first event whichwill honour and rec-reate the event in amanner reminicentof the early Celticinnaugurationswhich took placehundreds and prob-ably well over a

thousand years ago. But, it is not

just the Innauguration which is important, as it willalso be the first Intemational Clan Gathering forthe Buchanan Clan in modem times.

With modem estimates of the Buchanan beingover 5 million people strong, our clan has grown toa size unrecognisable to what it was in former times.

The fact that the people organising this event,Shona and Paul Gibson, are based in Australia, show that ow Buchanan family is now, also, a trulyinternational one.

Now we have a chief, no longer is it anarmigerous clan, it .now is a formally and legallyrecognised fu1l Scottish Highland Clan.

But the firsts keep coming as there is stili yetanother first, the first parliament for the Buchananclan in centuries.

This Parliament will give all Buchanan'spresent a chance to help set the priorities and thedirection ofthe clan for the foreseeable future. So,for a very historic Clan. there are so many major'firsts' to celebrate!

When Mikeand I travelled toAmerica and Aus-traiia, we weretaken aback by the

. number of fellowBuchanan's whowere interested in^^*:.^^\/urrlrlrB tuCambusmore, not

. just to see Scotlandand the ancientlands and home of

the Current Chiefofthe Buchanan Clan but to takepad in this really historic event. The fact it will prob-ably also be the biggest gathering ofthe Buchananclan in recent centuries triggeied yet more interest.Indeed, fellow Buchanans were so enthused bythe support for this event that now a committee of

- Buchanans from round the world is being set up.'' It is to be headed by the antazing and talented

event orgalisers, Shona and Paul Gibson from Aus-tralia. Together with Malcolm Buchanan, DavidByrne and George McAuslan from CBSI and manymore, plans are well underway for these exciting

Scientists hunt for descendants of48 people who signed

Scientists hope to find descendants ofthe nobleswho signed the historic Declaration of Arbroathahead of its 700tr'anniversary.

Genealogists at Strathclyde University havelaunched a search to find living families of the 48signatories who put their name to one of Scotland'smost impoftant documents.

The declaration was sent to Pope John XXII in1320 asking him to recognise the country's indepen-dence and acknowledge Robefi the Bruce as lawfulking.

Experls from the Glasgow university's Centreof Lifelong Leaming aim to find people related to

signatories, including James Lindsay of Dowhill,Bonnie Prince Charlie's friend.

They can confirm their heritage using samplesof DNA passed only through the male line.

Graham Holton, principal tutor for the Genea-logical Studies programme, said: "If there were anyfolk who were claimants to dormant peerages orsomething like that, there's a chance that it could beused.

"However, the thing is that we're looking forunbroken male lines and there could be illegitimacieswithin that - because the Y DNA will be passed downwhether it is a legitimate, or illegitimate line."
