Through the pilot project, CropLife India has reached out to more than 2,100 farmers (direct and indirect). The program has consisted of 28 field demonstrations and 230 classroom sessions in four villages: Khairimal, Bhaisala, Kuria, and Chandrahiya. East Champaran district of Bihar’s school awareness program in 12 schools has covered more than 900 school students in a span of two years.

The event today witnessed more than 200 farmers, public representatives, and representatives from the Agriculture Department; District Development Manager, NABARD and Agriculture University; KVK scientists and SWARD officials; CropLife India Members; Officials from other agro-chemical Companies; opinion makers; Academia; agriculture input dealers; and Panchayati Raj representatives.

Stewardship being one of the key engagements for CropLife India, the project aimed to impart grass root training to the farming community on responsible usage, secure storage, and container management. The two-year program aimed to create awareness among farmers, farm families, school children, dealers, and distributors of crop protection products on Responsible Use of Crop Protection Products.

Mr. Pramod Kumar, Tourism Minister –Bihar and MLA, Motihari,present here today inKhairimal village, said, “I congratulate CropLife India for enabling farmers of these four villages ofEast Champaran district in Biharto responsibly use Crop Protection Products, to support the Government’s Grow Safe Food mission in Bihar. Such field training workshops not only help farmers but also create awareness amongst farmer families, villagers and State Government officials. While it is significant for the farmer to work towards enhancing productivity of the crop, it is also vital that the quality of the crops grown is preserved thus ensuring safe and secure food for a rising nation”.

Mr. Kumar added, “In order to sensitize the issue at broader level, we will demand similar projects from the State Government”.

Mr. Brij Uberoi, CEO, CropLife India, while addressing the gathering said, “CropLife India creates awareness by engaging with farmers in building capacity on sustainable practices through its stewardship programs. Our project in Bihar has been highly successful. The farmer behavior has undergone the following changes – Judicious use of pesticides, in terms of category, discretion in quantity and need; Spraying is done at the exact time; Awareness about spurious pesticides, hence no purchase of pesticides without Bill; Complete use of Personal Protection Equipment while spraying; and No reuse of pesticide containers.”

He also added, “Currently this training program has covered more than 2100 farmers in the district, thus encouraging a safe and scientific approach to crop development. The success of this project has further strengthened our commitment towards Indian Agriculture and farmers and we will replicate this project in other states of India.”

Mr. Naga Singh, progressive farmer and Mukhiya, KhairimalPanchayat, said, “We will feel proud that Motihariis the leading district in the State and Nation in the production of safe food and responsible use of pesticides”.

The project has gained a steady pace and has been appreciated by both the State Department Agricultural authorities and the farming community. Trainings for farmers include classroom teaching and practical field training sessions for farmers. The training curriculum includes 16 elaborative modules covering a wide range of topics such as Integrated Pest Management, role of beneficial insects including pollinators, judicious and responsible use of chemicals, secure storage of pesticides, impacts of counterfeit and illegal products, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as masks and gloves, correct spraying techniques, maintaining sprayers and nozzles, and triple rinsing of used containers.

CropLiIfe India has similar projects being executed in the state of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh and the endeavor is to extend them to other states across the country.

CropLife India conducted a Farmers’ training program through its Pilot Project on Responsible Use of Pesticides and Container Management in four villages namely Khairimal, Baisaha, Kuria & Chandrahiya in East Champaran District, Bihar. The two year pilot project was implemented under the aegis of Grow Safe Food Campaign of Government of India and with the support of Department of Agriculture, Co-operation & Farmers’ Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. The project was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture, Sri Radha Mohan Singh on August 17, 2015. The event was organised to bring out under mentioned objectives-

1. To review and show case the project achievements

2. To publicise the issue of Responsible use of Pesticides and Container

Management

3. To bring out the importance of Personal Protection Equipment Kit

during the spraying activity among the farmers

This pilot project in the villages Khairimal, Baisaha, Kuria & Chandrahiya of East Champaran district of Bihar, was completed in the presence of Shri Pramod Kumar, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism & MLA-Motihari, Govt. of Bihar, Shri Shyam Babu Yadav, MLA-Pipra, Shri Vivek K Singh, Principle Secretary, Dept of Environment & Forest, Govt. of Bihar, Shri K M Singh, Director-Extension, Rajedra Prasad Agricultural University, Pisa & Shri Avnish K Jha, DDM-NABARD. The two-year program aims to create awareness among farmers, farm families, school children, dealers and distributors of crop protection products on responsible use of crop protection products and safe disposal of empty crop protection containers.

Around 2100 Direct and Indirect farmers have been trained on various

aspects of safe and responsible use of pesticides, IPM, application techniques,

triple rinsing and container management etc through a 16 modules training

course. Conducted 28 Field demonstrations & 230 Classroom sessions in all 4

project villages and School Awareness Program in 12 Schools covering more

than 900 School Students.

Shri Pramod Kumar, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Bihar during his address recalled his association with the inauguration of the Pilot Project on Responsible Use of Pesticides and Container Management on August 17, 2015 at Chandrahiya Gandhi Smarak by Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture, Shri. Radha Mohan Singh. He appreciated and thanked CropLife India and SWARD NGO team for their committed and dedicated endeavour for their objectives. He pointed out that though this project farmers have been made aware of Responsible use of Pesticides and Container Management and impacts are visible through change in their purchase, storage and use pattern of pesticides. Their income level has been increased and moving towards prosperity. It’s a great step towards Safe Food Growing. He emphasized and demanded that such project shall be extended to all villages of Champaran so that a crop revolution like the Champaran Revolution should come to fore from the region. He promised if any help and assistance at the Govt. of Bihar level is required would work for the same.

The event got an momentous applause with the theme song on the objectives of project was sung by Mr. Rakesh Kumar and his team of the the Village Panchayat where the request for precaution and alertness over the use of pesticides, authentic purchase and putting on PPE Kit during spraying was conveyed in the mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri song. The report of the event was duly reported in the local media and all the participants expressed their happiness to be part of the event and the information delivered.
