A common question asked is if one can use a basic generic mineral oil, such as ‘baby oil’, in the tester to create the smoke.

Youcanifyouwantto,butwedon’trecommendit.ThepatentedUltraTraceUV®smokesolutionsuppliedwiththistester;willperformhundredsofteststhatonlycostpenniespertest;istheonlysolutionintheworldapprovedbytheautomanufacturers;andwillnotvoidanyvehiclefactorywarranties.Plus,youhavetheaddedbenefitofthetracedyethatmarkstheexactlocationofaleak,increasingdiagnosticaccuracyunlikeanyother.Thisspecialsolutionisnota“generic”mineraloil.Infact,genericmineraloilsarenotintendedforthistypeindustrialuse.Thegenericmineraloilsbreakdown,asevidencedbyafoulodorandcoulddamagevehiclecomponents.

1. Fill with Solution

PriortousingtheSMT300testerforthefirsttime;pourtheentirecontentsofone12oz.(355ml)smokesolutionbottlesuppliedintothemachine.

Initial Setup/Prior to Turning the SMT 300 Smoke Machine Tester ‘ON’

WedonotrecommendintroducingasolutionintotheSMT300testerthatisnotrecommendedbythemanufacturerbecauseitmaydamagethevehiclesbeingtestedandmayaffecttheirfactorywarranty.Itcouldalsocauseharmtotheoperator!

2. Proper Air Fitting

TwocommonlyusedmaleairfittingsaresuppliedwiththeSMT300tester.Besureoneofthesefittingsisthecorrectfittingforyourfemalehoseconnector.OtherwiseinstallcorrectfittingontotheSMT300tester.UseTeflon®threadsealer.Donotover-tighten.

Basic Testing Procedure

1. ConnecttheSMT300testertoworkshopair.

2. ConnecttheSMT300tester’sredpowercabletovehicle’s12VoltDCbatterypositiveterminal.

� Batterymustbeingoodconditionandfullycharged!

3. ConnecttheSMT300tester’sblackcabletothevehicle’schassisground.DoNOTconnecttheblackcabletobatterygroundbecauseasparkinthevicinityofthebatterycancauseanexplosion!(Figure 1)

4. ObservethatthegreenpowerindicatorlampontheSMT300testeris‘ON’confirmingthatyouareproperlyconnected.

� Ablinkinggreenpowerlampindicatesinsufficientbatterypowertothetester.

5. Connectsmokesupplyhosetosystembeingtested.

� FlowControlValvemustbeinfullOpen(+)position.(Figure 2)

6. Press<ON>buttonandfillsystemwithsmoke.

� Smokeproductionison5-minutetimer.

7. Usewhitelightsuppliedandlookforexitingsmokeoruseultravioletlightsuppliedtolookforfluorescentdyedepositatexactlocationofaleak.

� Thelongersmokeisallowedtoexitaleak,themorefluorescentdyewillbedepositedatleaklocations.

� Wheneverpossibleitisbestto‘purge’the‘non-smoke’airoutofthesystembeingtestedinordertoquicklyfillthesystemwithsmoke.

� AnEVAPsystemwillusuallytakeabouttwominutestofill.

� Anindicationofthesystembeingfulliswhentheflowmeterballstopsdescendingduringtheleaktest(orwhenthepressuregaugestopsincreasinginpressure).

Iftheflowmeterballdescendstothebottomoftheflowmeter;thatindicatesthereisnoflowthroughthesystembeingtested,orthatthereisnoleakinthesystembeingleaktested.

Iftheflowmetercontinuestoindicateflowafterthesystemisfilled,thisindicatesaleak.Thehighertheballisintheflowmeter,thelargertheleaksize.

EVAP Leak Size Reference Points

Theflowmeterhastwoleaksizereferencepointswhichhelpquantifytheleaksizeinthesystembeingleaktested.The.020”(0.5mm)and.040”(1.0mm)referencepointsareequivalenttoleaksofthosesizesintheEVAPsystembeingtested.

Oncethesystemisfilled(eitherinTESTorSMOKEsetting)andtheflowmeterballstopsdescending;positiontheflowmeter’sredflagsothatitalignswiththeleveloftheflowmeterball.ComparetheleveloftheballwiththereferencepointsinordertodetermineaPASS/FAIL.

AballreadingabovethereferencepointindicatesaFAIL.

AballreadingbelowthereferencepointindicatesaPASS.

NOTE:TheflowmeterismostaccuratewhentheSMT300controlvalveisinTEST(non-smoke)setting.

Remember:Alltestswiththistesterareperformedwiththevehicle’sengineturnedoff!

NOTE: TheflowmeterisactiveinallsettingsoftheFlowControlValve.However,forthemostprecisequantifyingofaleaksizeusetheTESTsettingineitherofthesetwomethods:

FillsysteminTEST(nosmoke)settinguntilflowmeterballstopsdescending.Positiontheflowmeter’sredflagsothatitalignswiththeflowmeterballposition(asdescribedonpreviouspage).Compareflowmeterballpositionwithflowmeter’sLeakSizeReferencePoints.Iftheleaksizeisunacceptable(abovereferencepoint)andleaktestingisrequired;setcontrolvalvetoSMOKEsetting,introducesmokeandlookforsmokeordyetofindtheleak(s).

B. Tosavetime;fillsysteminSMOKEsetting(fullopen).BesureTesterisstill<ON>andwhentheflowmeterballstopsdescending,immediatelypositionthecontrolvalvetoTESTandallowtheballtosettle(TESTsettingwillgiveyouamoreaccurateflowmeterreading).Compareflowmeterballpositionwithflowmeter’sLeakSizeReferencePoints.

Iftheleaksizeisunacceptableandleaktestingisrequired,thentimewillhavebeensavedbecausethesystemisalreadyfilledwithsmoke.NowpositionthecontrolvalveagaintoSMOKEandcontinuetointroducesmokewhilelookingforsmokeordyeatleakexitpoints.

NOTE: Whensmoketestingaclosedsystem,suchastheEVAPsystem;itisbesttopurgethe‘non-smoke’airoutofthesystembyleavinganopeninginthesystembeingfilledwithsmoke(e.g.EVAPvent).Closethesystemoncesmokeexitsandcontinuetofillwithsmoke.Thisquicklyfillsthesystemwithsmoke.

Control Valve Overview

TEST (non-smoke)settingdeliversnon-smokeairandthemostaccurateflowmeterreading.ThisistheperfectsettingwhenyouwantthemostaccurateleaksizereadingwhentestingtheEVAPsystem.

Thissettingcanalsobeusedwhentestingmanysystems,suchasasolenoidfunction,whensmokeisnotneeded.Testthesolenoidwhileactivatingitopenandclosed.Closingthesolenoidshouldmaketheflowmeterballdroptothebottom.Aflowmeterindicatingflow,whilethesolenoidisclosed,confirmsaleakinthesolenoid.

SMOKE (fullopen)settingdeliversmaximumsmokevolumetothesystembeingleaktested.

FLOW CONTROL controlssmokevolume.Locatingtheleaksourceissometimeseveneasierwithlesssmokevolumeexitingaleak.AfterfillingasystemwithsmokeintheSMOKE(fullopen)setting,usethesmokevolumecontrolknobtotuneinthedesiredvolumeofsmokeexitingaleak.

NOTE: FlowControldoesnotaffectdeliverypressure;itonlyaffectssmokeflowvolume.

� Thistechnologyisdesignedsothatthedyewillonlydepositifthereispressure-differential.Soforinstance,thedyewilldepositwhenexitingaleakbutwillnotdepositduringthewindandwatertest.

OriginalPurchaserWarranty:undernormaluse,careandservice,theSMT300(exceptasotherwiseprovidedherein)shallbefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipforONE(1)YEARfromthedateoforiginalinvoice.

Seller’sobligationsunderthiswarrantyarelimitedsolelytotherepairor,atSeller’soption,replacementoforrefundoftheoriginalpurchasepricefor,SMT300orpartswhichtoSeller’ssatisfactionaredeterminedtobedefectiveandwhicharenecessary,inSeller’sjudgment,toreturntheequipmenttogoodoperatingcondition.
