Why School WASH and RWH In 2010, MoE endorsed Child-Friendly School

Initiative framework GoN has adopted National Sanitation and

Hygiene Master Plan – includes WASH in schools Since 2006 – National Strategy on School Health

and Nutrition Till 2011 – 11000 schools and their surrounding

declared ODF using SLTS

GoalTo improve the health condition of the urban poor and

extremely poor, especially children, though improved water

supply including rain water harvesting, ground water recharge,

sanitation and awareness on Healthy Active Living and

Environmental, hygiene practices in schools and their living

environment.

Objectives1: Support selected schools/children homes in Kathmandu Valley, in improving WASH facilities and rainwater harvesting and recharge systems

2: Use schools as a entry point to promote rainwater harvesting in surrounding communities through school-led RWH;

3: Providing practical WASH education as well as training school children as change agent to stimulate change in behavior of the community so as to improve WASH facilities through School led rain water harvesting;

4: Enhancing health and fitness of students through provision of sports facilities;

5: Support the “Recharge Kathmandu” campaign

6: Promote public-private-community participation in WASH

Plan of ActivitiesActivity 1: Select 10 schools and provide orientation to selected schools on Rain Water Harvesting and Ground Water Recharge

Sub-activity 1.1: Preliminary survey of the schoolsSub-activity 1.2: Technical survey of the schools

Activity 2: Prepare plans and designs for WASH facilities improvement, rainwater harvesting and recharge and sports facilities improvement for the selected schoolsActivity 3: Implement WASH facilities improvement, RWH and recharge system and sports facilities in selected schoolsActivity 4: Provide practical training on WASH and Operation and Maintenance of the WASH and RWH systems to be selected schools (with maintenance tool kit)Activity 5: Design communication materials and implement School-led rain water harvesting campaigns in catchment areas of the 10 selected schools
