While Christmas can be a ti me of celebrati on and catching up with family and friends, some of us can be approaching Christmas with mixed emoti ons. When you have lost someone you love, someti mes its hard to look forward to special occasions knowing that your loved one will not be here.
For some, keeping to the familiar rituals can help, for others the expectati ons of all the preparati on feels impossible. Whatever you are feeling is perfectly Ok.
As Christmas approaches think about ways you can prepare yourself to cope with Christmas such as:
Giving yourself permission not to do those Christmassy things you dont feel up to, like writi ng cards or att ending the seasons parti es.
Do something special in memory of your loved one such as cooking their favourite dish, lighti ng a candle, listening to a favourite Christmas song.
Give to someone else in their name there are many chariti es who need food & gift s for those in need.
Give yourself ti me to grieve, you dont have to put on a brave face - put aside some ti me to let yourself feel your emoti ons, and share how you are feeling.
The Christmas Service of Remembrance organised by T J Scott and Son is an opportunity for you to do something special for Christmas which acknowledges the importance of those in our lives whom we have lost. Everyone is welcome and you are invited to contribute a photo of your loved ones for the special visual tribute to be played during the service. A street fair in Sunbury will raise funds for CareWorks SunRanges, a not-for-profit community crisis centre in the town.
The first Community Street Life festival this Sunday will have OShannassy Street closed to traffic as more than 40 businesses set up shop.
There will be buskers, childrens activities including a jumping castle, scavenger hunt, sausage sizzle and silent auction.
Co-ordinator Sharyn Snook hopes the trade fair will attract more people to buy local and shop in Sunbury.
Lots of people think that in Sunbury theres no shopping, no parking, and they want big shopping centres like Westfield. I wanted to show people that were surrounded by great places to shop in town.
All proceeds from the event, including stall fees, sponsorships and money raised from raffles will be donated to CareWorks.
Friends of mine have had help from CareWorks, who give right back into the community, Ms Snook said.
If we support local business and the proceeds go to a charity, that is giving back to the community. Its a cycle of helping each other.
The festival will be from 10am-4pm. The scavenger hunt is from 11am-2pm and the silent auction finishes at 3pm. \ AV
