INTERNATIONALSLUDGE MANAGEMENT
WORKSHOP1-2 October 2018
Boğaziçi University/Istanbul -TURKEY
Katı Atık Kirlenmesi Araştırma ve Denetimi Türk Milli Komitesi
INTRODUCTIONDear Colleagues;
You are cordially invited to attend and
contribute to the “International Sludge
Management Workshop” to be held at Boğaziçi
University, İstanbul, Turkey from October 1 to
2, 2018. The International Workshop is
organized by the Turkish National Committee
on Solid Wastes (TNCSW), International Solid
Waste Association (ISWA) and Boğaziçi
University with the strong support of many
national and international institutions aiming to
demonstrate the key areas and critical issues to
be considered in treatment, disposal and and
recovery of sludge.
The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is
an expensive and environmentally sensitive
problem. It is also a growing problem world-
wide since sludge production will continue to
increase as new sewage treatment works are
built and environmental quality standards
become more stringent. The challenge facing
sludge managers is to find cost-effective and
innovative solutions whilst responding to
environmental, regulatory and public pressures.
Recycling and use of wastes are the preferred
options for sustainable development, rather
than incineration or landfilling, but with
sewage sludge this is not straight forward
because of perceptions over contaminants,
pathogens and its faecal origin, particularly by
the food retailers.
This training workshop, through two-day
keynote speeches and oral presentations by
ISWA and TNCSW experts, will offer an
expert overview of the current issues and
developing trends on sludge management. The
workshop also address operational guidelines,
includes case studies from Turkey, Europe and
the World through which participants will be
able to see how a sustainable sludge
management is operated in practice by
attending to a technical tour.
The training course will be of benefit to
participants especially from economically
developing countries as well as those already
operating sludge treatment/disposal plants in
economically developed countries to learn and
provide truly sustainable sludge management.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I'm
looking forward to meet you at the Sludge
Management Workshop in Istanbul.
