CALL

qCALL is known as computer-assistedlanguage learning. It is a form ofcomputer -based learning.

qCALL originates from CAI that wasinvented in 1960s. The function ofCAI as an aid for teachers.

qCALL has been developed over 30years, and it has been gone throughthree phases;

CALL IN MALAYSIA

qThe CALL policy in Malaysia was formulatedin 1989 which advocated studentsacquiring computer literacy in a curriculumthrough curriculum approach.

qA few projects have been carried out; ComIL( the computer intergrated learningsystem, 1990)

qThe realization of computers in education isnot new.

qAccording to Pembangunan Pendidikan2001-2010,

the earliest used of ICT in schools was in

qIn 1996, the government announced onSMART Schools Projects where IT isextensively included as a teaching

and learning aid.qBy 2000, 2418 schools were supplied

with computers and each computerlaboratory LAN and Internetconnections for teaching andlearning.

qIn Malaysia, many of CALL initiativesundertaken by schools, under the

qThe Computer Assisted LanguageLearning (CALL) software wasdeveloped by the Educational

Technology Division of the Ministry ofEducation, Malaysia as part of theSmart School program to aid studentsin learning English prepositions

qThe Smart School initiative is one ofthe seven

flagship applications that are part of

Malaysias Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)

project.

qIt is a new school concept in Malaysia.The aim is to give students skills,knowledge and backgroundtechnology use and application.

qThe computer system used in theSmart School is known as the SmartSchool Management System(SSMS).

Its purpose is to manage resourcesand processes required to support theteaching and learning functions of theschool.

qLearning software from MoE wereinstalled in SSMS for students to useand monitor by the teacher.

The objectives of the Smart School, which arebased on Malaysias National Philosophy ofEducation;

qIn spite of the failure in the first phase,one of the selected school which is aSmart School, in Kuala Lumpur, issucceed in the first phase.

qIn terms of CALL, the school has beenusing CLE, a courseware developedby an American company since the

year 2000.qThe CLE is installed in the schools lab

that has 21 networked computers. Allthe students are involved and

assisted by 16 English teacher, and

qSocial constructivism is a theory thatconcerns with forming knowledge andmeaning from interaction betweentheir ideas and experiences.

qAccording to Jean Piaget, throughprocess of assimilation andaccommodation, individuals constructthe new knowledge from theirexperiences.

CONCLUSION

qTo conclude, computer and internet hasgiven the impact on the developmentof CALL. The government sees that itis important to enhance the learningprocess, in order to attract students,to learn English.
