• There is a mistaken belief that because of similar physical appearance, traits, and characteris9cs some people belong to a certain race or na9onality.

This presenta,on is for my colleagues, and professionals in the medical and educa,onal fields. Learning about other’s roots and origins can dispel stereotyping myths so that rela,onships among human diversifica,on can be strengthened; and in the educa,onal and health fields, prevent unfair placements and incorrect medical diagnosis of minority clients.

I am Tri-‐cultural. Having a Puerto Rican grandmother, a Mexican father, and a New Yorker-‐Mexican mother, I have lived and was raised in a home that provided me three cultures. I am bilingual and appreciate the cultural and sociological background from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the U.S.

I do not look “Mexican” as some people have responded when I tell them that I was born in Mexico, and so I ask what do “Mexicans” look like? Are they supposed to look a certain way? They nod, but I disagree. There is so much diversity among Mexicans as there is among all La9n Americans, whose origin and roots included Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Italy, to men9on a few.
