    2011-2012 SLICE: Student Leaders In Civic Engagement program application

    Members of the Thayne Centers SLICE: Student Leaders in Civic Engagement program take on a peerleadership role at Salt Lake Community College. Positions are available for both new and returningstudents. SLICE members complete a minimum of 100 direct service and training hours each semester.Applicants must demonstrate prior experience with volunteer service, community activities, and/or civicor political engagement. If selected as a SLICE member, students may receive a full tuition waiver each

    semester, pending completion of program requirements, including minimum service/training hours, and

    minimum 2.5 GPA. If students are unable to meet all requirements, they are responsible to repay the costof their tuition waiver. If extenuating circumstances exist, they will be considered on a case-by-case basis.Finalists for SLICE membership participate in a competitive interview process. Selected SLICE membersmust commit to meeting every Thursday from 1:00-2:30pm during both fall and spring semesters.

    Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered:

    Enrolled as a full-time student at SLCC (12 or more credit/hours)Minimum 2.5 GPA each semesterUtah resident File a FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and have the results sent to SLCC (Federal SLCC Code:

    Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your service/civic engagementactivities. Examples include a service-learning professor, or a representative from a non-profitagency.

    Attach an essay (two pages, typed, double-spaced) answering the following questions: Whatservice to the community have you been involved in? How have those experiences affected your

    goals, your worldview, and/or your educational path? What do you hope to bring to yourexperience as a SLICE member?

    Include a copy of your high school transcript (for new students) or SLCC transcript (forcontinuing students). Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
