    Fault Management

Overview Fault management is responsible for collecting fault and event information during system running process. The alarm information is displayed on a real-time basis on a user-oriented alarm monitoring platform or stored in database in the form of alarm and notification. Both past and instantaneous running state of the system can be traced through visual interface monitoring or history query. Based on the information provided by fault management, operation and maintenance personnel can perform troubleshooting and take precaution measures to restore service and system to the normal state in time.

Introduction of Terms This section introduces several common terms in the alarm management system.

    Alarm Code

Alarm code is a non-exclusive identifier to differentiate alarms. Alarm code is divided into foreground alarm code and background alarm code. Foreground alarm code refers to a fixed numerical value defined and allocated by macro in order to differentiate alarms in program. The same alarm code is used for the generated alarm and its corresponding recovery. Therefore, only alarm code and notification code need to be defined. Macro name is defined by alarm source which specifies alarm code ID macro based on the template of alarm management. Alarm value is provided by alarm management. Background alarm code is displayed on alarm monitoring platform. It is mapped in relation to foreground alarm code according to certain rules.

    Severity

There are four recommended alarm levels. The four alarm levels, which is displayed in the Severity Column of the alarm template, are indicated in descending order of severity as Critical, Major, Minorand Warning. Critical

Critical alarm affects all services and all NE resources.

    Major

Major alarm affects most services and resources.

    Minor

Minor alarm hinders the normal operation of some services.

    Warning

Warning alarm affects a certain service or resource.

There is no level classification for notification.

    Alarm Type

Alarm is classified into six types according to alarm trigger condition and its system impact.

Communication alarm: related with information transmission (ITU-T Recommendation X.733).

Processing alarm: related with software or process fault (ITU-T Recommendation X.733).

Environment alarm: related with the environment where the equipment is located (ITU-T Recommendation X.733).

QoS alarm: related with degradation of service quality (ITU-T Recommendation X.733).

Equipment alarm: related with device hardware.

OMS alarm: related with the network management system.

    Cause

Possible alarm causes explaining trigger condition and trigger frequency are enumerated to help operators find ways of removing the fault and take precaution measures. In this way, system can be restored to the normal running state as soon as possible.

    2. The network cable connection fails or looses.

    3. Network interfaces on the board are broken.

A certain link related with the Ethernet is down. In the current system, the link error appears in the form of OMC network interface fault, which means the communication between foreground and background (RNC NE and OMCR) is down.

The network interfaces OMC1 and OMC2 on CIB board need to be checked and only OMC2 network interfaces on other OMP board need to be checked.

    1. Check whether both OMC1 and OMC2 connect with network cables and if the connection looses.

Y --> Go to 2. Connect the network cables to OMC1 or OMC2 on both ends once again and check whether the alarm recovers.

N --> Go to 3. Replace the network cables for OMC1 or OMC2, and check whether the alarm recovers.
