Alberobello (BA), May 11 2018

Historical background·The Red House is a large building, in the countryside of Alberobello, on the road to Mottola, at the intersectionof the three Apulian provinces: Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century itwas a School of Agriculture, according to the wishes of its founder, Don Francesco Gigante. Immediately afterthe First World War he hosted the little orphans of soldiers who fell in battle, to whom he offered elementaryeducation. On the eve of the Second World War, it was requisitioned by the Ministry of the Interior andremained for many years isolated from the city, for exclusive police needs. At the Gigante Masseria, theoriginal name of the structure, between 1940 and 1943 were deported people who had strategic role orparticular political functions, mostly of Jewish origin, coming from every part of Europe, destined to Auschwitzand other extermination camps. Various nationalities arrived in chains, including Hindu, Irish and MalteseIndians, German Jews, Poles, former Czechoslovaks and stateless persons, politically dangerous Italians,Italian Jews who refused civil injunctions for work purposes, other Jews who became anti-Fascists for theRegime only because they had contested the persecutory anti-Jewish Italian legislation, Croatian Jewsescaping from the concentration camps directed by the ustaša, former Yugoslavs of the territories annexed toItaly subjected to violent measures of forced Italianization, including the burning of villages and the shootingof family units to which they belonged the Serbian and Slovenian partisans of Tito. Some, Jews and not, at thetime of the Armistice were transferred to Lazio and deported thanks to the zealous collaboration of the fascistpolice with the German occupiers. Between 1944 and 1946 - when the Puglia region attempted a difficult andchaotic transition to democracy, leaving unresolved the accounts left open by the fascist dictatorship, with thecomplication of an ally liberation that was anything but friendly with local civilian populations - former confinedpolitical fascists were detained, as well as other men accused of serious bloodshed resulting from tragicepisodes of purging from below, unleashed by angry mobs for the lack of institutional purge, former soldiers ofthe Decima Mas.

Between 1947 and 1949, in the midst of a climate of cold war, no less harsh than the hot but much longer one, many foreign women from all over Europe arrived, either ex-collaborators or prostitutes or strigglers followingthe Allies or without documents: with them, many children were interned, also rejected by all civil societies. Itwas then the turn of entire family groups of displaced persons from all over Europe, and not only: among them, especially Germans but also Muslim Albanians, Austrians already Italian citizens of South Tyrol who hadopted for Hitler for the new citizenship and who were now detested by both the Italians and the Yugoslavs nottitines leaving their country, women of the German Sudeten subjected to brutal torture by the Soviets, because already privileged by the Nazis, Russian Orthodox non-Bolsheviks and citizens of Baltic states, pursued by emissaries of the Red Army, defectors of various armies, foreign Jews expelled from the alliedcollection camps for violation of Italian laws, Polish Jews unwanted in their homeland who hoped to emigrateto Palestine.

This third season at the Campo, visited by reporters from all over Italy, inspired a well-known film, Donnesenza nome. The undesirable, by the Hungarian director Geza van Radvanij. The field has been used, from

time to time, as internment, concentration, transit, confinement, imprisonment, for refugees. The definition ofCasa Rossa as a reception area, widespread in Puglia in recent years, perhaps to rectify again, this time inApulian sauce, the myth hard to die about Italians, good people, that has not yet allowed us to fully reckonwith our dark history of the war and post-war years. On December 5, 2007, the Regional Directorate forCultural Heritage and Landscape of Puglia declared Casa Rossa an estate of historical and artistic interest, subject to the protection of the legislative decree 22nd January 2004 n.42. This date marked a watershed: theera of impromptu initiatives and liturgical memory has ended and projects on the future of the site have begun.Casa Rossa is not a unique example of the internment of Jews in Puglia, nor of the permanence of displacedpersons in the post-war period: it is however an isolated case in Italy and one of the few in the world oflong-term deportation structure: ten years. Here, on civilian populations, and in particular on women, children, political opponents, professionals andintellectuals, were dumped the costs of the war and the post-war period and the consequences of therewriting of the geopolitical map of Europe, in terms of mobilization, eradication of populations, deprivation ofevery right and dignity, as well as the elementary goods of daily life. In some houses of Alberobello isscattered a museum of works of art left by former interned artists, in exchange of food to fight hunger orclothes to endure the cold. The most important work of art at that time is represented by the frescoes in the Casa Rossa chapel. Thevariety of nationalities, cultures and religions of men and women who have been imprisoned for so manyyears at Casa Rossa, because of totalitarian oppression but also of intolerance for every diversity, means thatit can be proposed not only as a museum- Holocaust memorial in the South of Italy - also facing thedisappearance or transformation of similar places of memory in the South, prevalently didactic connotation -but also as a Center for Peace and Intercultural Dialogue between Europe and the Mediterranean, against alldeportations, discrimination and all wars. It is no coincidence that this meeting place of civilizations andcultures is located in the marvelous city of Alberobello, Unesco heritage of Humanity (source official websiteof the City of Alberobello). To this is added a further identity that saw the Red House protagonist in the seventies of the twentiethcentury: the building hosted a local television station and in the various rooms still bear evidence of thispassage.Among the curiosities it is also opportune to point out the Red House as a privileged place from the Apulianghosthunters.
