GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today.

A DIOS TODA LA GLORIA Una característica peculiar de la primera parte del Evangelio según san Marcos es que en general Jesús obra un milagro y luego le dice al beneficiario del milagro que no se lo cuente a nadie. Se ha especulado mucho al respecto: Marcos está preparando el terreno para el gran “secreto” que se revelará cuando Pedro proclame que Jesús es el Mesías en Cesárea de Filipo; otros comentaristas más escépticos sostienen que Jesús, quien era plenamente consciente de su naturaleza humana,

sabía que la mejor manera de difundir la Buena Nueva era pidiéndole a las personas que la mantuvieran en secreto. La reflexión de esta manera de guardar el secreto que nos resulta muy útil, sin embargo, es que Jesús estaba comenzando su ministerio público de la forma en que describe Pablo: lo estaba haciendo por la gloria de Dios, no para beneficio propio sino para beneficio de todos. Pablo después escribiría a los filipenses que Jesús “se rebajó a sí mismo” para parecerse a nosotros. Y vemos cómo esta humildad se pone en práctica hoy en la curación del leproso. RCIA-Celebration of Rite of Sending on Sunday, February 11th at 9:30 AM and Rite of Election at Christ Cathedral on Saturday, February 17th at 11:00AM

The Rite of Sending is the second Liturgical rite of the RCIA formation, in which the catechumens and candidates conclude the period of the catechumenate and enter the next stage of their journey of faith. The Rite of sending followed by the rite of election mark the beginning of a period of purification and enlightenment leading to the rite of initiation. Before the catechumens and candidates go to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election, the parish community celebrates this transition and sends them with a blessing to the Rite of Election, the catechumens and candidates are officially called by name by the Bishop or by the Pastor or some representative of his/her parish. The catechumens who enter the Church are recognized as Elects after the Rite of Election.

The Rite of Election is a very rich and memorable event. For the first time, they will experience a much larger community than the local parish, along with the brothers and sisters of other parishes of the entire Diocese who will receive the sacrament at Easter Vigil. Please accompany and keep the Catechumens and Candidates in your prayers.

RICA– Celebración del Rito de Envío el domingo, 11 de Febrero a las 12:30 PM y Rito de Elección en la Catedral de Cristo el Sábado, 17 de Febrero a las 11:00 AM

El Rito de Envío es el segundo rito litúrgico de la formación de RICA, en el que los catecúmenos y candidatos concluyen el periodo del catecumenado y entran en la siguiente etapa de su camino de fe. El rito de envío seguido por el Rito de Elección, marca el inicio de un periodo de purificación e iluminación que los conduce al Rito de Iniciación. Antes de que los catecúmenos y candidatos vayan a la Catedral al Rito de Elección, la parroquia celebra esta transición y los envía con una bendición al Rito de Elección, los catecúmenos y candidatos son llamados oficialmente nombrados por el Obispo o por el Párroco o algún representante de su parroquia. Los catecúmenos que entran a la Iglesia son reconocidos como elegidos después del Rito de Elección.

El Rito de Elección es un evento muy elaborado y memorable. Por primera vez, ellos experimentan no sólo el nivel de la Iglesia particular sino también el nivel diocesano, junto con los hermanos y hermanas de otras parroquias de la diócesis que recibirán el sacramento en la Vigilia Pascual. Favor de acompañar y mantener a los catecúmenos y candidatos en sus oraciones.
