I love the blog, just found it, although I read the articlesome time back. Some additional songs for the list:

The bridge to aeroplane over the sea, by neutral milkhotel (title track to an amazing album) is in pretty classicSFCP, e-C-G-D.

Also, "Midnight Radio", the epic closing number from thequeer rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch is aninteresting variation - The expected fifth chord is adominant 7th (a-F-C-G7, the sensitive transsexual CP?"),and after the first iteration, the cycle gets caught upbetween the 4th and tonic, before eventually resolvinginto the V7 and the chorus.

Great blog! I was working up in Methuen MA last winter,read the article and cut it out, but now can't find it - "Oneof Us" and "Building a Mystery" are two of my favoritesongs (I started thinking someone should do a mashup ofthem like the Oasis "Wonderwall" Green Day "Boulevard ofBroken Dreams" mashup that I love) (hmmm, I shouldgoogle that - maybe someone has). Anyway, I decided tomake a Pandora station based on it, but needed morethan those two seed songs. I googled "song structure Oneof Us Building a Mystery" and got your blog! Thanks somuch for the great list - now I can seed my station withseveral and see what else pops up!

@Rob: "Free Fallin'" doesn't work, actually. It starts on theI (F), not the vi (Bm). In fact, I'm not sure there's aBm anywhere in the song.Reply

Some more for the list (by year)2001: Howard Shore - "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum"(Fellowship of the Rings), just after Gandalf falls; inAb/Fm. (Same chords used elsewhere in the film series,inc The Grey Havens in ROTK.)

2005: Chemical Brothers - "Hold Tight London" (G/Em)



Also, "White Flag" (Dido) uses this to different effect as IVI V vi. Interestingly, this is the only case I noticed beforethat I would consider "sensitive female". :-)

Why does Iggy Pop's Passenger get an asterisk? I thoughtof that as the prototype for this progression.

"Pieces" by Sum 41 is another good one.And some people are blaming Korean artist for stealing offof "Poker Face" which I find ridiculous. Two SFCP song Iknow are "Wedding Dress" by Tae Yang and "One" by EpikHigh.

I realized that my interest in this chord progression ismostly in the somewhat darker "SF2" classification (onechord per bar). A couple more of those are:

Someone asked why Iggy Pop's The Passenger gets anasterisk. First of all, the tonic is Am, which thus means it'snot vi-IV-I-V, but i-VI-III-VII(in aeolian/natural minor).Second, the chord progression is actually 8 bars, it goesAm-F-C-G7-Am-F-C-E.

I'm really not getting the significance here. I think the factthat there are soooo many songs (as demonstrated by thislist and those suggested by posters) that use this chordprogression would seem to indicate to me that it's nothingparticularly special or unusual. Certainly not unusualenough to have an entire blog devoted to. I mean, I'm notgreat at music theory, but I know enough about music toknow that there's a limited number of chord progressionsused in Western music and so, naturally, some of them are



going to be commonly used over and over again. I justdon't get what is so important about that.
