Episode 4:

Int.-Jonah’s Bedroom-Night

Jonah is in his bed fast asleep. He is rolling back and forth and is clearly have a restless night. He sweats profusely and starts to talk in his sleep.

JonahNo… No… Get away from him.

Ext.-Jonah’s house- Day (Dream sequence)

Jonah walks through his dream and stumbles upon an old house. There are two people in the front yard cooking for a family BBQ, he identifies them as Carol, his father. The two kiss passionately on the lawn.

FatherI think the food is about ready. Want to call the boys?

CarolJonah!

Carol calls Younger Jonah comes running from around the house and runs into his mothers arms.

CarolThere’s one of my babies. Where is your brother?

The mystery child then follows around the corner and runs up to the family.

CarolThere he is!

Jonah’s father welcomes the mystery child with open arms.

FatherCome here buddy.

He picks up the mystery child and laughs.

FatherHow are you doing, Jack?

Int.-Jonah’s Bedroom-Night

Jonah shoots up awake from his nightmare. He looks around the room and doesn’t know where he is for a moment. It all felt so real to him.

JonahJack?

Cut to:

Int.-Therapist Office-Day

Jonah once again sits in the dimly lit office of Dr. Lewis. He can’t stop talk.

JonahHe just reappears magically after six years. Did he ever contact us?

No. He just shows up. He probably just wants money and then when he has it, he’ll never be seen or heard form again. It’s complete and

total…

Dr. Lewis cuts Jonah off.

Dr. LewisJonah, take a breath. Let me ask you some questions.

JonahSorry.

Dr. LewisNo I’m happy you are talking I just want to figure more out for myself. So you’re father showed up yesterday and didn’t mention the reason

for his stopping by?

JonahHe said he wanted to try the whole father thing but that’s a load of

bullshit.

Dr. LewisDid your father ever abuse you when you were a child that you can

remember?

JonahNo he didn’t. I have trouble remembering a lot from my childhood.

Dr. Lewis

That’s interesting to here.

JonahWhy?

Dr. Lewis Maybe you’re subconscious is trying to hide something.

JonahI don’t know. Ever since my dad came back, I’ve been having really

weird dreams.

Dr. LewisDreams of the past?

JonahYea most of the times they are of me as a kid but there is another kid in them as well. I don’t know who he is but my parents treat him the

same as they treat me.

Dr. Lewis Maybe you’re other personality, Jack, is being nurtured in your dreams as well. I know its hard but really try and pay attention to your dreams. They could help you learn something. How are the pills working out for

you?

JonahYea they work.

Dr. LewisThat’s good to hear. Unfortunately that’s all the time we have. If you

have any problems come back and see me.

Jonah gets up from his seat and exits the office.

Int.- Jonah’s Bedroom-morning

Jonah wakes up from another restless night. He rolls out of bed and starts to get ready for school. He gets dressed and gets his stuff together and starts to head downstairs, he can hear a commotion in the kitchen. He gets down the stairs and looks in the kitchen to see his father moving pots and pans.

Father

Hey there, Good morning. I made breakfast. You still like pancakes right?

JonahWhat the hell are you doing here?

Carol enters from the living room.

CarolI invited him over.

JonahWhat?

CarolI think you both should spend sometime together. Jonah I called you in

sick today so you can spend the day with your father.

JonahYou did what? I want to go to school today. I have a lot of work to make

up.

CarolYou can make it up tomorrow. You’re girlfriend will survive a day

without you as well.

Jonah’s father jumps into the conversation.

FatherGirlfriend? Well done, son. Didn’t think you had it in you for a while.

Jonah You wouldn’t know.

FatherThere’s a lot I do know and a lot I don’t but I’m willing to try and learn

the rest.

JonahWell I don’t want you near me.

FatherCome on Jonah we can have a fun time today.

Carol is scurrying about to get her things in order for work. She grabs her travel cup of coffee and starts to head out the door. Jonah’s father grabs her arm and pulls her in very close.

FatherAnd where do you think your going?

They both start laughing and holding each other. Then kiss passionately. Carol pulls away.

CarolTake care of him today.

FatherYou have nothing to worry about. I’ll take good care of him.

Carol starts to walk out of the door and Jonah’s father gives her a slap on the ass out the door. He shuts the door and turns toward Jonah.

FatherCome on sit down. Eat some pancakes. We got a big day planned.

JonahWhat kind of day?

FatherWhatever you want to do. We can go out on my boat?

JonahYou own a boat? How is that possible?

FatherWell what’s that supposed to mean?

JonahI mean how can you afford that do you even work?

FatherYes I work and watch your tone with me. Give me a little respect, I am

still you’re father.

JonahOk, dad. I’ll go see your boat.

Father All right lets eat and then well go find out sea legs. Sit down.

Jonah turns around and starts to head back up the stairs leaving his father downstairs alone. Jonah’s bedroom door slams.

Int-Jonah’s bedroom-Morning

Jonah gets into his room and locks the door behind him. He lies down in his bed and looks up at the ceiling.

JonahI can’t believe, mom betrayed me like this.

Jack appears lying next to him.

JackShe’s stuck in love with the fool.

JonahWhy? He is a piece of shit and doesn’t care at all about this family.

JackYou can say that again. I’ve seen a lot of dicks in my life but he is by

far the biggest.

JonahThere is a lot wrong with that sentence that just came out of your

mouth.

JackDo we have anymore blow?

JonahNo way.

Jack I’m kidding. Trying to make this day with dad a little less torturous.

JonahI respect your idea but we have to do this.

Jonah rolls over on his side facing away from Jack.

JackWe’ll be ready to knock him out.

Jonah hears someone coming up the stairs and a knock on his door.

FatherStart getting ready, son.

Jonah flips a middle finger at the closed door and stays in bed for another minute. He gets up, grabs his things, and exits the room.

Jonah walks down the stairs and into the kitchen where his father is waiting for him. The two exit the back door together and start walking toward Jonah’s dad’s car.

FatherAin’t she a beauty? Pontiac firebird. Bought her out of an old scrap

yard. Refurbished her and made he look really nice didn’t I?

JonahYou own this and a boat? Still not seeing how this is possible.

FatherI have my secrets.

Jonah’s father laughs. The two get in the car and start to make their way to the dock. Jonah notices that they aren’t going in the direction of the docks.

Int.-Car-Day

JonahThis isn’t the way to the docks. They are back this way.

FatherI know I know I have to make a stop real quick.

Jack appears in the back seat.

JackGuy is a prick no doubt but got to hand it to him this is a pretty nice

ride.

Jonah looks in the backseat at Jack in anger.

JackI’m just saying.

The car pulls up to an old rundown pub called The Crown. Dad puts the car in park.

FatherOk we’re going to stop in quick for a drink.

JonahIt’s 10am on a Tuesday.

FatherWell you can’t go on a boat without having a couple of drinks now can

you?

Jonah’s father walks up to the pub door. Jonah stands watching.

FatherYou coming in?

Jonah hesitantly starts to walk toward the door and goes in with his dad.

Int.-Pub-Day

Jonah walks in behind his dad. He looks around the very poorly lit place. There are a couple of pool tables in the corner of the room along with a dart board. Jonah also notices two men sleeping in two booths across from the bar. Another gentleman sits at the bar and the bartender serves him a drink. The bartender sees Jonah’s dad and greets him.

BartenderHey Jimmy. Haven’t seen you in a little while.

JimmyYea, been a little busy lately with various different projects. Marv, I’d

like you to meet my son, Jonah.

Marv extends his hand to shake Jonah’s.

MarvOh wow, the last time I saw you, you were only a little baby. How you doing? I’m Marv. Me and your dad are real close friends. Known him a

long time.

JimmyMarv and I go way back. He has been there for me through some of my

darkest moments.

MarvWell what’ll it be gentlemen?

JimmyI’ll have a Maker’s Mark straight and for you?

Jimmy motions toward Jonah.

JonahI’ll have water.

The two men stare at Jonah.

MarvSure he’s your son, Jimmy?

JimmyHe’s just not used to it yet. He’ll grow into it.

MarvOne Maker’s Mark and one…water. Coming up.

Marv starts to fix the two their drinks. Jimmy and Jonah sit at the bar in silence. Jimmy watches the TV screen above the bar. Jonah watches him carefully. Marv approaches them holding the drinks.

MarvAnd here we go. Five bucks.

JimmyYou got it, Marv.

Jimmy starts to go through his pockets but can’t seem to find his wallet.

JimmyOh shoot that’s right. I left my wallet on the boat. Hey Jonah, can you

spot me on this and I’ll give you a five when we get to the boat?

Jonah looks at him blankly. Jack appears.

JackHe only came back for the money. He’s using you to buy his drinks.

Don’t do it.

JimmyWell come on son, we can’t have Marv stand here all day. Can we?

Jonah reaches into his pocket and grabs his wallet. He opens it up and flashes a ten.

JimmyOh a ten will work perfectly.

Jimmy tries to grab it but Jonah moves the wallet away.

JimmyI’ll pay you back I promise.

JackDon’t, Jonah.

Jonah takes the ten out himself and places it on the bar. Marv takes it and moves over to the register. Jimmy holds up his glass.

JimmyA toast. To you, son. It’s good to be back with you.

Jimmy takes his glass and clinks it against Jonah’s. Then Jimmy turns his attention toward the TV again.

JackNext time, I take over. No more of that, Jonah.

Jonah whispers.Jonah

I know.

After a while of being in the bar, Jonah and Jimmy exit the bar. They both get into the car, peel out, and starting to make their way to the docks. They arrive shortly after they leave the bar.

Ext.-Dock-Day

Jimmy leads Jonah down an old, out of date dock. A lot of the boats are old and decrepit. Jimmy can see his boat.

JimmyWell here she is.

Jonah looks at the boat. It is old and beaten up. The paint is chipping off the sides and the name is barely legible.

JimmyGot her for a steal. I know she doesn’t look like much but she sails

beautifully and she’s fast too.

Jack appears again.

JackWhat a dirty piece of shit.

JonahSo do you live here?

JimmyI stay here from time to time. I let the waves rock me to sleep at night.

Doesn’t feel right sleeping in a house most times.

JonahThis is what you brought me out here to see?

JimmyYou know, I’ve had this dream where I take you out to this boat. We

come back and sit on the dock. Watch the sunset and enjoy a beer as father and son. Maybe we could do some thing like that?

Jimmy gets on the boat and starts to walk into the cabin.

JimmyWell don’t just stand there. All aboard.

JonahAre we sailing?

JimmyUmmm… not today. The waves have been a little rough lately and the

engine has been acting up recently.

Jonah doesn’t seem surprised by his father’s words.

JackOf course this thing doesn’t run. I’m shocked it even floats.

Jimmy moves over toward a small cooler. He grabs two cans of beer out from it and throws one to Jonah.

JimmyComing at you.

Jonah catches the can.

JimmyNice hands, son. You know when you were a baby, I used to play this

game with you. I would throw a tennis ball across the yard and you just couldn’t help but go chase it. Then you’d bring it back and I’d throw it

again. You used to love that.

JonahYou played fetch with me?

JimmyWell I guess. If that’s what you want to call it.

JonahThat’s exactly what you did.

Jimmy chugs his beer before Jonah can even open his.

JimmyYou have to get better at drinking.

JonahI’m not a big drinker like you.

JimmySurprised, you think you’d get that trait from at least one of us.

Jonah starts to feel a bit uneasy. He reaches in his pocket and grabs a cigarette and his lighter.

JimmyNow you’re speaking a bit more my language. Bum a cig?

Jonah reluctantly hands him one. Jonah lights his own first and then throws the lighter to his dad. The sun begins to set in the distance.

JimmyWell not exactly what I had in mind but it’s close enough. See this is

nice. We had a great day together. Just the two of us.

Jack interrupts.

JackThree of us.

JimmyI’m going to go take a leek. Save my seat.

Jimmy walks away and goes to the back where the toilet is. Jimmy shuts the door.

JackShould we ditch?

JonahI was just thinking that.

JackI know that’s why I said it. I think it’s a great idea. Lets go.

JonahWe’ll wait a couple more minutes then well ask to leave.

Jack Why not now? It’s not a long walk we have done it before.

JonahBecause of mom.

JackMom?

JonahShe really wants this to work and every time I think about leaving I

think of her.

JackJonah, I don’t want to sound like a dick but we got to look out for

ourselves sometimes. Mom will understand if we come home now. He took us to a bar at 10 am. We spent the last six hours there. He used

all of your money and now he brought you to the boat he lives on when he’s back in town. That’s fuck up.

Jonah sits there in silence thinking to himself. Jack takes a swig of the beer and spits it out immediately.

Jack

Uh gross. Even the beer is expired. Do you have any idea how long that takes? This guy is a loser.

JonahJust five more minutes… Please.

JackFine.

Jonah sit in the cabin for the next five minutes in silence. He doesn’t hear anything from the bathroom and starts to get curious as to where his dad is. He gets up from his seat and walk to the back. Jonah stands outside the bathroom door and knocks.

JonahDad?

No response. Jonah knocks again.

JonahDad! You good?

Jonah puts his ear to the door and doesn’t hear a sound. He puts his hand on the handle and slowly starts to open the door. Jonah peaks his head inside.

Jimmy is sitting on the toilet bowl passed out. Jonah’s attention is drawn to his father’s left arm that has a hypodermic needle sticking out of it. Jonah touches his shoulder to see if he is still alive. Jimmy groans and moves slightly but is unresponsive.

JackFucking junkie.

JonahI’m ready to go home now.

Jonah turns and walks back through the cabin. As he is walking out a small framed photograph standing on a nightstand catches Jonah’s eye. He picks it up to look at it. One the bottom of the photo is a small strip of tape with writing on it. It reads “My boys. (2001)”

JonahI was three in this photo.

Jonah inspects the picture further and sees that the other boy in it was the one from his dream.

JonahWho are you?

Jonah looks back toward the bathroom then down at the photograph once more. He puts the small frame in his jacket pocket then continues to walk through the rest of the cabin. He steps off of the boat and onto the dock. Jonah walks down the dock slowly and doesn’t look back.

Int.-Jonah’s house-Night

After a long walk, Jonah finally makes it back home. He walks in the back door and sees his mom at the kitchen table.

CarolHey baby, how’d it go? Did you have fun?

Jonah thinks about the reality of his day vs. what he thinks his mom really wants to hear. He chooses his mom’s wellbeing over his own.

JonahIt was great. We had a good time.

CarolOh my god that’s wonderful to here. Where is your father now?

JonahUm… he said he had to run some errands quickly. He dropped me off and drove off. Said you’ll see him in the next couple of days though.

CarolOh ok. Well I’m happy the two of you were able to connect a little bit.

JonahYea you know I’m actually feeling kind of tired, think I’m going to go

lay down upstairs.

Jonah kisses his mom and starts to walk up the stairs to his room. He closes the door and locks it behind him. Jonah falls face first into his pillow and lets out the loudest yell he possibly can into it. Jack appears.

Jack

I knew this was a bad idea.

JonahIt wasn’t all pointless. I did find this.

Jonah pulls out the old picture frame from his jacket pocket and starts to further inspect it. He lays the picture by his side and stares at the ceiling. Then he slowly closes his eyes.

Cut to:

DREAM SEQUENCE

Jonah is thrown in the middle of his dream. He is a small child and is holding his fathers hand, he notices the mystery child holding the opposite hand of his dad. They are all walking from the Pontiac Firebird toward the entrance of ‘The Crown Pub’. They enter the pub and sit in a booth together. Marv approaches them.

MarvWell what a fine group of gentlemen we have sitting at this table.

What’ll it be Jimmy?

Jimmy Well the boys and I are out celebrating. The old man had quite the day

at the race track.

Jimmy pulls out a wad of cash from his jacket pocket.

JimmyBring over a bottle of whisky and a glass for me and two milks for the

boys here.

MarvYou got it Jimmy.

Cut to:

The three of them exit the pub. Jimmy is stumbling out and having trouble holding onto the two kids hands. Jimmy opens the front door of the Firebird and grabs Jonah and puts him in the back seat. Jimmy leans in the back and puts his seatbelt across Jonah. Jimmy then turns to the other child and points.

JimmyOk son, you’re riding shotgun.

Jimmy moves around the front side of the car and opens the door for the other boy and puts him in the front seat. He fastens the child’s seat belt and closes the door. He stumbles around the front of the car again, opens his door, and sits down in the drivers seat. He puts the key in the ignition and then starts to drive the car home.

They have miraculously made it about half way home. Swerving all over the road. Jimmy is incoherent.

JimmySee boys, you always gotta pay attention to your surrounding when

driving. It one of the scariest things people can do it get behind of the wheel of a car. And always look both ways when crossing the street. I

live my life by those two rules. Remember them well.As Jimmy continues to ramble he can see a light up ahead turn yellow.

JimmyThis baby is fast enough to beat it.

Jimmy starts to floor the car to try and catch the light. He sees it turn completely red but is going to fast to stop and his response time is completely thrown off by the alcohol. As the car passes through the intersection, it is immediately struck by another car on the passenger side. There is a cloud of smoke and immediate silence follows the loud crash.Jimmy turns to a crying Jonah in the back.

JimmyOh my god. What happened? Jonah are you ok buddy? No its ok you

don’t need to cry everything is going to be ok.

Jimmy looks and sees that Jonah isn’t harmed. He turns and looks in the passenger seat and doesn’t see the other child. Jimmy notices a big whole in the windshield. Jimmy forces his door open and rushes to the front of the car and yells out a name.

JimmyJACK!

Int.-Jonah’s Bedroom-Night

Jonah screams as he wakes up. He breathes heavily and is once again covered in a pool of sweat.

JonahJack? He was there.

Jonah lies awake for most of the night thinking to himself. It’s Wednesday morning and he can hear is mother getting out of bed and ready for work down the hall. He gets up quickly and grabs the picture. Jonah rushes downstairs and sits at the kitchen table waiting for his mom to come down next.

Cut to:

Int.-Jonahs kitchen-Morning

Jonah sits in silence as he waits for his mom to come down the stairs. Moments late, Carol comes down the stairs in a particularly good mood. She goes over to Jonah and kisses him on the head.

CarolHello my love. Sleep well?

JonahNot really.

CarolAw I’m sorry. You ready for school? I can drop you off today if you’d

like.

JonahI’m not ready. I’ll just take the bus.

Carol notices something is off with Jonah.

CarolHow about some OJ that always makes me feel better when I don’t

sleep well.

Carol crosses over to the fridge and grabs the carton of Orange juice and pours a tall glass for Jonah. As she walks over to give Jonah the glass, she notices that he is holding something.

CarolWhat are you holding?

Jonah moves his hands aside so she can get a better look at the picture. Her smile begins to disappear.

JonahI was hoping you would be able to tell me.

CarolWhere did you get that photograph?

JonahFound it on Dad’s boat.

CarolDad’s boat?

JonahYea its where he lives, he took me there yesterday and I found this

photo. I know one of those kids in this photo is me.

CarolYes. You were such a beautiful little baby. My little Jonah.

JonahThat’s not what I was wondering. Who is the other little boy?

Carol doesn’t say a word. She noticeably can’t find the words. There is a pause.

JonahMom? You have to tell me.

CarolYou don’t recognize you’re brother?

JonahMy brother? I don’t have a brother.

CarolYou did.

Jonah sits there in shock.

JonahWhy did nobody ever tell me I had a brother? What happened to him?

Carol

He died. There was a car accident. I think about it everyday of my life. Nobody knows true pain until one of their children is taken away from

them.

JonahIt was dad’s fault wasn’t it?

CarolYou’re father brought the two of you to a bar and he decided to drive.

He was drunk. Served time for it. A long time.

JonahThat’s why he wasn’t around.

CarolYes. You were so little after a while you just seemed to forget. You hid the memory. I brought you to all kinds of doctors. You used to wake up

in the middle of the night screaming. You were so afraid. Then poof, one morning you acted like it never happened.

JonahWhen was that?

CarolI think you were about ten.

Jonah gets up from his chair and starts to make his way up the stairs and stops halfway.

JonahI’m feeling sick. I’m not going to school today.

He continues up the stairs and goes into his room.

Int.-Jonah’s Room- Day

Jonah sits on his bed staring at the ground. He does everything is his power to not cry but cant fight off the urge. Tears roll down his face. Jack appears and puts his arm around Jonah’s shoulder.

JonahDid you know?

JackNo I didn’t.

JonahHow long have you been around Jack?

JackI’m around through the years, when I feel like I’m needed. We are

going to get through this Jonah. Together. Like I said from the start. I’m not going to leave you.

Jonah continues to cry.
