Our customers trust the quality, reliability and proven performance
of our timepieces. They include people who have a high affi nity
for technology. They are fascinated, for example, by our solutions
for magnetic fi eld protection and scratch resistance. However, our
customers also include those who must be able to rely on their watch
completely, such as divers, pilots or elite special forces units like the
German GSG 9.
It 's functionality that counts. Therefore SINN watches include only
truly useful technological features and omit purely fashionable
gadgetry.
Thus we are always on the lookout for new technologies and mate-
rials. We often fi nd inspiration by looking beyond the usual sources.
We observe the developments in the sciences and other industries
and push the limits of what is physically possible time and again
in creating new watches. What's the most exciting thing about our
work? There are still many discoveries to be made!
We hope you enjoy reading our informative catalog!

Groundbreaking developments.
Designed for practical use.
The team of watchmakers,
designers and engineers at
SINN focuses on technological
innovations, new materials and
new solutions. Our objective is
to develop watches that are
absolutely reliable no matter
where they are worn – on the
trading fl oor or on a polar expe-
dition, under water or above
the clouds, in the desert or the
rainforest. At SINN, functionality
is never achieved only at a
theoretical level. That's why our
customers include pilots, divers
and members of special forces
such as the GSG 9.
Our watch tests are tougher
than the real world.
Special areas of application
require special solutions. A pilot's
watch has to satisfy different
demands than a diver's watch.
The endurance tests to which
SINN watches are subjected
vary accordingly. The tests have
only one thing in common:
For some, time is a philosophical concept. For others, it's a precisely measurable unit. For SINN, it is both.
Our watches unite traditional fi ne craftsmanship with pioneering innovations. The result: timepieces that
people can rely on throughout their lives and that guarantee the highest precision even under extreme
conditions. This reliability can be experienced fi rsthand and verifi ed by objective methods.
Even under the toughest climatic conditions, Arved Fuchs swears by the reliability and suitability of the U2 for everyday use.

The principle behind this technology is simple,
but its implementation requires some complex
steps with meticulous attention to detail. A HYDRO
watch is fi lled completely with a special oil, i.e. the
movement, dial and hands are immersed directly
in a crystal-clear bath of oil. That's why every
HYDRO watch must also be a quartz watch. The
oscillation of the balance in a mechanical watch
cannot overcome the friction of a liquid medium.
There are convincing advantages to this type of
construction: the watch is absolutely free of fog-
ging, because there is no air inside the case. Oil is
non-compressible, so the internal pressure of the
watch constantly adjusts to the external pressure
by means of tiny movements of the membrane
back. Thus the HYDRO watch is pressure-resistant
at any accessible diving depth. The crystal and
back are not exposed to any compressive stress
even at the greatest depths.
A further advantage is that the refractive index
of our HYDRO oil matches that of sapphire crystal
glass, so no light is refracted at the interface
between the oil and the sapphire crystal. As a
result, a HYDRO watch can be read at any angle
under water.
For the UX, SINN selected a chronometer quartz
movement with thermal compensation made
by the Swiss manufacturer ETA. This movement is
accurate to within ± 0.05 seconds per day, so the
watch will run at most 20 seconds slow or fast over
the course of a year.
Absolutely free from fogging, pressure-resistant
at any accessible diving depth and perfect
readability from any angle under water – these
are the unbeatable advantages of our diving
watches equipped with HYDRO technology. How
does it work? The movement, dial and hands are
immersed directly in a crystal-clear bath of oil.
The watch is thus free from fogging, as there is no
air inside the case.

The higher the temperature, the lower the viscosity
of the lubricating oil fi lm. At low temperatures, the
oil becomes more viscous, leading to increased
friction throughout the movement; more energy
is lost in the train wheel, the escapement and the
complete balance. Consequently, the amplitude
of the oscillation decreases and the watch
becomes increasingly inaccurate.
In conjunction with the aging of the oil, which like-
wise increases the viscosity of the oil, conventional
watch oils can thicken enough that the watch
stops at temperatures just below the freezing point.
Such watches no longer function reliably when
used at lower temperatures! Only the special oil
with substantially lower viscosity developed by
SINN for use in extreme temperatures provides
reliable long-term lubrication at very low tem-
peratures. The composition of the oil ensures that
it is still suffi ciently fl uid at temperatures of –45 °C
and below to maintain the movement's proper
mechanical function.
Moreover, the viscosity of the oil at +80 °C does not
change enough to cause the oil to run off the ruby
pallets of the escapement.
Our Sinn special oil is highly resistant to aging,
and provides lubrication for use under extreme
conditions.
The long-term accuracy of a watch movement crucially depends on the lubrication of its moving parts
– this is particularly true at extreme temperatures. We use the special oil developed by SINN to ensure
reliable function under even the most extreme conditions. With its outstanding properties, it provides
lubrication that is highly resistant to aging at temperatures between –45 ºC and +80 ºC.

Ar-Dehumidifying Technology solves a basic problem of mechanical watches: the aging of oils due to
moisture in the air contained inside, or diffusing into, the watch. The movement is mounted in a nearly
anhydrous atmosphere thanks to the three Ar-Dehumidifying Technology elements of drying capsule,
EDR seals and protective gas fi lling. Aging processes and fogging of the crystal from sudden cold are
prevented, and reliable functioning and accuracy are ensured.

-Dehumidifying Technology
Why does a watertight watch need dehumidifying
technology anyway?
The beauty and fascination of owning a SINN
watch are enhanced by the knowledge of the fi ne
mechanical precision of this object of daily use.
Nonetheless, no matter how accurately the indi-
vidual components are made, friction and wear
must be minimized so that they function durably.
Thus high-quality synthetic oils are used to ensure
optimal lubrication of the movement bearings. This
remains an unavoidable process in all mechanical
watches. Humidity, however, accelerates the aging
of the oils. How does moisture get into the watch?
Water is always present in the atmosphere in gas-
eous form, which is why it can penetrate the seal
systems of a watch case. Temperature changes
then cause microcondensation, permitting water
to collect in liquid form on exposed parts of the
movement. The consequences: The effi ciency
of the lubrication deteriorates. Electrochemical
corrosion, wear and friction increase, reducing
the amplitude of the balance. The watch runs
with decreasing accuracy and must fi nally be
reconditioned. Our engineers looked for solutions
to this problem and found them in the form of
dehumidifying technology.
Three technical elements
The Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is based on
three technical elements: a drying capsule, EDR
seals and a protective gas fi lling.
The primary element: the drying capsule
The drying capsule is the most important part of
the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.
Light blue: up to 50% saturation
Medium blue: up to 75% saturation
Dark blue: up to 100% saturation
Pale blue: up to 25% saturation

The capsule is fi lled with copper sulfate; this absorbs
moisture from the air inside the case and binds
it permanently. Copper sulfate turns increasingly
blue as its water content rises; the shade serves
as an indicator of the drying capsule's level of
saturation (see diagram). The capsule features a
small viewing window of sapphire crystal glass for
this purpose.
EDR seals
To minimize the exchange of gas between
atmospheric air and that inside the case, and
thus the penetration of atmospheric moisture, we
only use Extreme Diffusion-Reducing (EDR) seals in
watches featuring Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.
These seals reduce the infi ltration of moisture in
the case to as little as 25% of the value permitted
by conventional case seals made of nitrile rubber
(NBR).
Superior protective gas fi lling
The Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is completed
by a superior protective gas fi lling. This creates an
ideal climate for the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology
to function in. Only moisture diffusing from the air
now has to be bound in the drying capsule. This
avoids the humidity which is otherwise locked in
during conventional assembly.
Mounted in a nearly anhydrous environment
These painstaking and technically elaborate
measures are intended to keep the movement in a
protective environment which is almost completely
dry (anhydrous). A positive consequence of this is
that it slows the aging process of the oil, thereby
extending the functional life of the movement.
Also, fogging of the crystal due to sudden
temperature shocks (such as immersion in cold
water) can be prevented, ensuring that the watch
remains clearly legible at all times.
Three-year warranty
Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is a truly pioneering
achievement for mechanical wristwatches by our
engineers – and a decisive advancement for all
afi cionados of mechanical watches. A three-year
warranty is offered on all watches featuring
Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.
Unobtrusively integrated in the case: the coloration of the drying capsule with its inspection glass indicates the amount of moisture absorbed. The movement remains dry.
The drying capsule, like the push-piece and crown, is securely sealed with a seal made of special plastic. On the right: copper sulfate (CuSO4) binds moisture and changes color from white to blue.

Model 757 DIAPAL with nanotechnology.
The objective of the Ar-Dehumidifying Technology is to prevent the
oil from aging. The idea behind the DIAPAL technology goes one
step further. In this case we select special pairs of materials that
work together without lubrication (!) and without causing friction,
ensuring long-term accuracy of the movement and particularly of
the Swiss lever escapement.
Amplitude
– Escapement without oil
– Oiled escapement
– Escapement with DIAPAL
A comparison of the Swiss escapements: Unoiled, it functions for a maximum of three months. Standard lubrication leads to a signifi cant decrease in amplitude after three to fi ve years. During this period the escapement with DIAPAL technology continues to function perfectly.

DIAPAL
Time in years
a polished diamond surface
proved to be a better friction
partner than the ruby tradition-
ally used for this purpose. Lubri-
cation is no longer required for
lasting accuracy and function.
However, this combination still
failed to produce acceptable
oscillation amplitudes without
lubrication.
Thus, in 1995 SINN began
testing numerous other material
combinations for use in watch
technology, and applied for the
fi rst patents in 2000.
To counteract the aging
processes of the oil in the watch,
the movement is maintained
in a dry environment fi lled
with protective gas using our
Ar-Dehumidifying Technology.
The technicians, engineers and
physicists at SINN are currently
focusing on an even more
effi cient solution to this problem.
Their idea: if oil isn't used, there
won't be any diffi culties with
aging oil.
The approach based on this
idea focuses on the Swiss lever
escapement. The reason for this
is the special role this part of the
movement plays with regard to
the aging of the oil. Empirically,
the lever escapement is the
most sensitive component of
the move ment with regard to
accuracy, i.e. the quality of the
lubrication at this point has the
largest impact on the accuracy
of the entire movement.
In the beginning was the dia-
mond: today we celebrate the
triumphs of nanotechnology
SINN began its research on
the DIAPAL technology in 1995
with the idea of using diamond
pallets to replace ruby ones. For
conventional escapements, oil is
required only to reduce friction
between the ruby (pallet stone)
and the steel (escape wheel).
In the Swiss lever escapement,

The stainless steel case hardened using TEGIMENT Technology
provides extremely effective protection from scratches on the case
surface. To achieve this, we do not apply any coatings of foreign
materials; rather, the surface of the stainless steel itself is hardened
in a special process. In turn, the black, hard coating is applied to
the U1000 S model, for example, by physical vapor deposition (PVD).
This high-quality, black, hard coating is achieved only in combina-
tion with TEGIMENT Technology.
To keep the cases of our
watches in the best possible
condition when they are worn,
SINN uses the TEGIMENT Tech-
nology for several models.
A TEGIMENT case has a surface
hardness of approximately 1200
Vickers. This value corresponds
roughly to the hardness of
commonly used zirconium oxide
ceramics. By comparison, an
unhardened stainless steel case
has a hardness of approximately
220 Vickers.
To understand the durability of
this technology properly, you
must know that a TEGIMENT layer
is not a coating of foreign mate-
rial. Rather, the surface of the
stainless steel itself is hardened
using a special process.
With this technology, SINN effec-
tively protects the surface of the
watch case from scratches.
The 756, 757, 856, 857, 900 and
U1000 models as well as the
bezels of the SINN U1, U2 and UX
diver's watches are treated with
this technology.
Black hard coating
The TEGIMENT Technology forms
the basis for PVD coating for the
models 756 S, 757 S, 856 S, 857 S,
U1000 S and U2 S.
TEGIMENT cases have a special
feature which immediately gave
the SINN engineers a new idea.
The hardness profi le of the TEGI-
MENT layer is continuous, i.e. the
high hardness of 1200 Vickers
transitions very gradually to the
basic hardness of the stainless
steel. This makes it possible to
apply a PVD-colored coating on
a hardened case without having
to fear the familiar peeling of the
colored coat from the body of
the case.
The TEGIMENT, on the other
hand, has a hardness compa-
rable to that of the PVD coating
and merges continuously with
the basic hardness of the case.
This prevents the "eggshell"
effect and dramatically reduces
wear. For this reason, SINN uses
PVD coatings only on TEGIMENT
cases. This combination is the
only way to achieve high-quality
coloring of a steel case by PVD.
Scratch-proof like the TEGIMENT layer: the black hard coating on the U1000 S.

As early as the 1930s, watches
used for special purposes were
protected against magnetic
fi elds.
Later, magnetic fi eld protection
was integrated in pilots' watches
due to the magnetic defl ectors
used in the radar screens found
in airplane cockpits and ground
stations. However, the restriction
of magnetic fi eld protection
to professionally used chrono-
meters is proving absolute in
today's world.
In a study of 1000 watches by
SINN's customer service depart-
ment, nearly 60% of the watches
received were magnetized, and
half of these (30%) had severe
defects caused by magnetic
fi elds.
During this study, the speed of
the movement before and after
demagnetization was docu-
mented. If the speed deviation
before demagnetization was
greater than 5% of the speed
after demagnetization, a defect
due to magnetic fi elds was
assumed.
While the earth's magnetic fi eld
is far too weak to pose any risk,
magnetic fi elds from electric
motors, loudspeakers, door
closers or other such sources
can cause lasting interfer-
ence with the function of a
mechanical watch. The primary
source of error for magnetic
interference with the rate of
the movement is a magnetized
Nivarox balance spring, i.e. the
timing component of the watch.
The Nivarox balance spring is
made of a magnetizable mate-
rial for the purpose of thermal
compensation.
When it comes to magnetic fi eld
sensitivity, the modern balance
spring is far superior to the
older steel springs with regard
to sensitivity to magnetic fi elds,
because Nivarox springs are
non-magnetic as required by
DIN 8309. However, in the case
of a relatively low magnetic
fi eld exposure of 4,800 A/m or
Magnetic fi elds such as those of electric motors, loudspeakers or door closers cause the Nivarox
balance spring to become magnetized and adversely affect the accuracy of the watch. We solve this
problem by using a protective sheath consisting of a closed, magnetically soft inner case that includes
the dial, the movement holding ring and the case back. This magnetic fi eld protection far exceeds the
DIN specifi cation for anti-magnetic watches and minimizes magnetic interference.

The chart shows the shielding infl uence of the magnetically soft sheath. Without magnetic fi eld protection, nothing prevents the magnetic fi eld from affecting the movement of the watch. The SINN magnetic fi eld protection reduces the strength of the magnetic fi eld in the interior of the case to a fraction of the external value (red curve).

At SINN we use a closed,
magnetically soft case interior
consisting of the dial, the move-
ment holding ring and the case
back to achieve this protection.
This type of shielding far
exceeds the DIN specifi cation
for anti-magnetic watches.
The DIN specifi cation for
anti-magnetic watches requires
protection only up to 4,800 A/m.
6 mT – roughly one quarter of
the pole strength of a common
house-hold magnet – this
permits an accuracy error of ± 30
seconds per day. Compliance
with chronometer standards is
thus impossible. If the spring is
exposed to stronger magnetic
fi elds, the oscillation of the bal-
ance will change permanently.
Protection from magnetic fi elds
Magnetic fi elds can be diverted
using magnetizable materials.
If you place a hollow body
made of iron in a magnetic fi eld,
you will see that a large part
of the magnetic fl ux lines are
bundled in the wall of the hollow
body. The interior space is thus
shielded from magnetic forces
to a large extent.
SINN engineers use this principle
to their advantage. It is important
that after exposure to a mag-
netic fi eld the protective sheath
does not remain mag netized,
as it would become a source of
interference.
Materials that can be easily
magnetized but have only
low remanence – (residual
magnetization after exposure to
a magnetic fi eld) are referred to
as "magnetically soft". Pure iron is
a good example of this.
With the help of magnetically
soft materials, the watches
bearing our magnetic fi eld pro-
tection symbol are protected
from magnetic fi elds up to
80,000 A/m and 100 mT.

According to the DIN specifi cation, the bezel of a diving watch may only be turned counter-clockwise
and should ratchet in increments of one minute. The construction of the rotating bezel is an extremely
sensitive safety topic. To preclude risks to the life and health of the diver, our U1000 series employs a
safety solution based on two elements. One is the secure attachment of the rotating bezel, which differs
greatly from the conventional snap-in mechanism: thanks to our design, the bezel remains in place,
even upon impact. And a mechanism in the U1000 series provides additional protection against acci-
dental misadjustment. Thanks to this comprehensive safety system, divers can be confi dent they are in
fact safe and protected. In addition, the precise ratcheting with its unmistakable clicks in increments of
one minute is an audible expression of quality.

The rotating diver's bezel is fi rmly attached to the toothed ring with
four screws and thus cannot be lost.
Toothed ring
The toothed ring has upper and lower toothing and is seated in the
case band. The upper rectangular toothing prevents the diver's bezel
from shifting inadvertently. The lower saw toothing together with the
spring ring ensures that the bezel can be turned in only one direction.
Spring ring
The lower saw toothing of the toothed ring slips over the springs of
the spring ring when turned counter-clockwise. Clockwise rotation is
blocked by these springs.
Toothing of the center section of the case
The toothed ring is secured by the interlocking of the upper toothing
and the cogs on the case band.

Secure attachment of the rotating Bezel
The rotating bezel of the U1000 series cannot
be lost. That means that it does not become
detached when something hits it or it gets stuck
somewhere. To achieve this secure attachment,
the diver's safety bezel is screwed to the underlying
toothed ring using four screws.
In addition, the case band is surrounded by
toothing which interlocks with the toothed ring and
thus secures the attachment to the case.
All of our rotating bezels are secured against
loss; in other divers' and pilots' watches a similar
technical principle is used.
Unintentional misadjustment impossible
In addition to preventing loss of the ring, this
secure attachment mechanism protects against
misadjustment in both directions, e.g. when the
watch bumps into other objects. In order to turn the
bezel of the U1000, you must press it down gently
with your fi ngers.
Under this pressure, the upper cogs on the toothed
ring disengage from the case band, and the bezel
can be rotated. The lower saw toothing of the ring
produces the characteristic full clicking sound of
the ratcheting mechanism. Inadvertent misadjust-
ment of the rotating bezel by contact with a fi nger
or impact is impossible.
The rotating movement is made possible by the
saw toothing on the underside of the toothed
ring gliding over the springs of the spring ring. This
design permits only counter-clockwise movement
of the bezel. When you let go, the spring ring
generates the required upward pressure to secure
the bezel in the toothing of the case and to protect
it against accidental misadjustment.

These watches have a proud tradition at SINN that dates back to the company's beginnings. Our reputa-
tion was established with instrument wristwatches and instrument panel chronometers for aviation. Since
1961 pilots, for whom reliable time measurement is crucial to survival, have depended on the perfect
readability and above-average accuracy of our timepieces – especially in extreme situations.

Uncompromising functionality – even under the most demanding
conditions: the pilot's chronograph, which refl ects the design of
cockpit instruments, is in keeping with the SINN tradition. In the early
days, the company founder developed traditional airplane cockpit
clocks for use in fl ight.

A big step for SINN: Our model 142 was the fi rst automatic chrono-
graph in space – and proved its reliability even in the weightless
environment of a space ship. The limited anniversary edition of 2005
was followed by a new design. Model 142 St II captivates its wearers
with the symmetrical dial display featuring a central 60-minute
stopwatch at the center, and permits an unimpeded view of the
movement as standard for the fi rst time.

45Large image: Set of dashboard clocks with wooden display block made from cherry wood.
When Sinn Spezialuhren was founded in 1961, cockpit instruments and the precision they must maintain
even under extreme conditions played a special role. They inspired Helmut Sinn, the company’s founder
and a pilot himself, to create his fi rst aviation chronographs. But these on-board instruments are indis-
pensable not only on airplanes and yachts. Fans of classic car rallies also rely on precision timepieces
that are just as stylish as they are functional. These events require adherence to specifi ed times in
addition to excellent orientation and the perfect control of the vehicle.
Optimal reliability thanks to outstanding technology.
Individually confi gurable
Set of dashboard clocks
Now you and your team can select a combination
of navigation instruments for the next rally or tour.
For example, the dashboard clock, precise to the
second, with a removable bezel. And up to two
chronographs, with such features as a tachymeter
scale, ascending or descending numerals, and
fl yback function. Perfect for setting target times
and completing time trials successfully.
These instruments can be securely fastened to the
dashboard with the help of mounting plates made
of satin-fi nished titanium. They can be removed
easily by pressing on the bayonet joint (no chance
for thieves!) and replaced as needed. And during
the off-season, when there are no rallies to be run,
the set of dashboard clocks looks good on your
desk, for example. The elegant wooden display
block pictured on the cover is available separately.
- Case and baseplate of pure titanium
- Secure fastening with bayonet joint
- Sapphire crystal glass (!) with
innovative anti-refl ection technology
- Flyback function on chronograph
- Watertight and pressure-resistant to 10 bar
- Ar-Dehumidifying Technology for enhanced
freedom from fogging
- High-altitude resistance (for use in airplanes)
- Fully functional at temperatures
between -20 °C and +60 °C
- Rotating bezel with exchangeable inserts
- Enhanced resistance to shock and vibration
15771-CatA5-e-2010-11-innen-4c-rz-korr.indd 4515771-CatA5-e-2010-11-innen-4c-rz-korr.indd 45 18.02.2010 16:35:06 Uhr18.02.2010 16:35:06 Uhr

Individually confi gurable
Fully functional even under extreme conditions
These clocks and chronographs are watertight. But even with
watertight instruments, the air enclosed in the case contains water
in a gaseous state. And air can also penetrate the seals. When the
water vapor in the case condenses into liquid, the instruments are
impossible to read. To prevent this from happening, Sinn has devel-
oped Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. The combination of a special
drying capsule, EDR seals (extreme diffusion reduction) and a fi lling
of protective gas guarantee that these instruments remain free from
fogging, even in diffi cult weather conditions.
Another benefi t: With its outstanding qualities, SINN special oil
ensures the functional reliability of these instruments at temperatures
ranging from -20°C to +60°C.
The unused drying capsule – it turns blue upon absorbing water.
Three exchangeable bezel
inserts are available
These dashboard instruments
can be equipped with a
count-up or count-down bezel
as desired. The tachymeter bezel
for the chronograph makes it
possible to measure average
speeds. You can select the bezel
you want for your dashboard
clock – and order additional
ones as needed. They can be
exchanged easily.
Thanks to the fl yback function
you are perfectly equipped to
drive a defi ned route within a
specifi ed time – a challenge for
both the driver and navigator.
The dashboard chronograph
with fl yback function allows the
chronograph to be tripped while
in use. With the exchangeable
bezel it is possible to set precise
targets and read them off at a
glance.
Bayonet joint protects against theft
Simply press and turn the clock
to remove it from the baseplate
and store it in the leather pouch
provided. The clock can be
reattached just as easily and is
once again ready for use, thanks
to the convenient bayonet joint.

SINN was the fi rst company to manufacture diving watches that complied with European diving
equipment standards, and the fi rst to test and certify them for pressure resistance, watertightness and
enhanced freedom from fogging. The technical development of diving watches is one of the greatest
challenges for engineers and watchmakers, because these timepieces must be absolutely waterproof,
perfectly readable in all lighting and water conditions and extremely durable. Our watches are the ideal
mission timers.

For more than thirty years he
has led expeditions to the most
remote corners of the globe
– frequently under extreme
conditions. For example, in 1977
there was the two-month trip up
the De Pas and George Rivers
in the Canadian province of
Quebec in traditional Indian
canoes. That was followed by
numerous other journeys. In
1981 he crossed the Atlantic in
a sailboat; in 1983 he explored
Greenland by dogsled; and
he rounded Cape Horn in a
collapsible boat in the winter of
1984. In 1993 he sailed through
the Northwest Passage within
one year without an icebreaker.
His boat, the "Dagmar Aaen",
a shark cutter restored in 1988,
was the fi rst sailboat to circum-
navigate all of North and South
America without an icebreaker.
In 2000 he retraced the leg-
endary Shackleton expedition in
a historically accurate replica of
the "James Caird" lifeboat, sailed
through the famous Northeast
Passage on his fourth attempt in
2002, and crossed the Northwest
Passage for the second time
between 2003 and 2004. In 2006
he traveled around Ellesmere
Island, the tenth largest island
in the world, by dogsled and
on skis. All this is impressive
enough. But in 1989 he made
history: in temperatures as low
Arved Fuchs is the most famous adventurer in Germany. At least, this is how the native of Schleswig-
Holstein is frequently described in the media. This is all the more surprising because two elements of the
statement are not quite correct. Indisputably, Arved Fuchs is well-known. However, this is an understate-
ment to say the least, as the 55-year-old resident of Bad Bramstedt has a fi rm place in the history of the
world's polar explorers. Furthermore, the professional designation he considers appropriate sounds
considerably more prosaic. He sees himself as an expedition leader who gives lectures and works as a
writer, journalist and fi lm-maker.

as –52 °C, his eight-member
expedition team struggled
across 1000 kilometers in 56 days
to the North Pole. In the same
year he reached the South Pole
with Reinhold Messner as well.
He was thus the fi rst German
to reach both poles – and the
fi rst person to do it on skis. Thirty
years of cracking glaciers,
glittering icebergs, inhuman
cold. It seems that Arved Fuchs
can't tear himself away from the
eternal ice. Whether with sled
dogs, on skis, on foot or by boat,
for him it's always a "journey to
the kingdom of the senses", as
he explained in an interview.
"In the silence there you can
truly hear nature, hear the wind,
your sense of smell is intensifi ed,
you see things differently and
more intensely. For me it's an
incredibly beautiful landscape."
At the same time these expedi-
tions are the fulfi llment of a
childhood dream. Even as a
small boy, he was spellbound by
the fascinating stories of famous
polar explorers and learned the
legends of the North. "Our family
read a lot, and the bookshelves
were full of books and reports on
Nansen, James Cook, Magellan
and many others. I found it
absolutely fascinating. I also
In 1996 the "Dagmar Aaen" became the fi rst sailing ship to circumnavigate North and South America without an icebreaker.

loved outdoor sports such as
hiking, riding, sailing and skiing,
and foreign cultures and new
situations were always exciting."
He began organizing his fi rst
expeditions during his training
as a seaman in the merchant
marine. He abandoned his
studies in marine engineering to
fulfi ll his dream of becoming an
expedition leader.
With regard to carrying out
these expeditions, Arved Fuchs
sees himself as a meticulous
craftsman. He believes that
expedition management is a
profession that can be learned.
Fuchs is very team-oriented in
his work, with a strong sense of
responsibility. To him, adventures
are creative moments in the
mind. They give him the freedom
to think outside the box. His
objective is not success at any
price. He is convinced that no
expedition is worth a human
life. His undertakings are always
precisely planned down to the
tiniest detail. What's important is
to achieve control of the calcu-
lable risks – precisely because
unforeseeable risks are always
present.
The equipment is part of the
meticulous preparation. When
it comes to time measurement,
this connoisseur of mechanical
watches has relied on the U2
since June 2007. He particularly
values the uncompromising
durability of this diving watch.
For instance, despite everything
his watch has been through,
there are no scratches on the
crystal or the case. In his opinion,
the U2 is better than watches
made by other manufacturers
with regard to suitability for
everyday use. "On my expedi-
tions I can't worry about han-
dling a watch carefully. I don't
need a piece of pretty jewelry.
I need reliable equipment - a
watch that works perfectly under
water, on land and in sub-zero
temperatures, and that I can rely
on one hundred percent, that
gives me the exact time under
any circumstances and all
climatic conditions. And I have
all that with the U2", says Arved
Fuchs, impressed by the reliable
mechanics. Even under the toughest climatic conditions, Arved Fuchs swears by the reliability and suitability of the U2 for everyday use.
15771-CatA5-e-2010-11-innen-4c-rz-korr.indd 8215771-CatA5-e-2010-11-innen-4c-rz-korr.indd 82 18.02.2010 16:40:03 Uhr18.02.2010 16:40:03 Uhr
83
In addition to the durability of
the watch, there are particular
technologies he favors. For
instance, the U2 has a second
time zone, which becomes cru-
cially important in regions where
daylight lasts 24 hours. It 's clear
that precise time measurement
is required for reliable naviga-
tion – and the U2 plays a crucial
role in this despite state-of-the-
art satellite technology. "Other
watches keep accurate time,
too. But what distinguishes the
U2 is the perfect combination
of various special features and
technologies." Naturally, as
a seaman he is familiar with
Germanischer Lloyd and its high
quality standards. He knows
that SINN has its diving watches
tested and certifi ed there. This
plays a major role in his decision
of which watch to purchase.
"This goes beyond run-of-the-mill
marketing. With this certifi cation,
SINN has undertaken to docu-
ment the high-performance
functionality of its watches on a
voluntary basis. To me that is a
true sign of quality."
For Arved Fuchs, expeditions are "journeys in the kingdom of the senses" and the fulfi llment of a childhood dream.

The U2 in use in harsh climatic conditions
TIM THOMPSON
This is became known when
Tim Thompson reported on his
experiences with the watch – in
a letter to Lothar Schmidt, the
owner of SINN. He explained
that it had always been very
diffi cult to fi nd a watch that
could withstand the extreme
climatic conditions of his home
region. All of the timepieces
he'd previously tried ran slow or
stopped after a period of time
or fogged up. Quartz watches
stop running entirely. One day
Tim Thompson read about the
U2. He was so intrigued that he
ordered it immediately. Since
then it has accompanied
him in all weather. Thompson
described how he wears the
U2 over his glove in winter, for
instance when he's shoveling
snow. He wears it to go ice-
fi shing and when working with
the snowblower. In summer he
goes swimming with it. And he
wears it when he's driving new
piles in murky water for slips.
And of course he wears it when
collecting maple syrup in spring
or using his chain saw.
In the meantime, the U2 has
experienced snowstorms and
thun derstorms, winter cold and
summer heat. It goes wherever
Thompson goes and is subjected
to every imaginable test in his
everyday routine. However,
to date no damage, dents or
scratches are visible. The crystal
is also intact and the TEGIMENT
layer is in perfect condition.
The movement still keeps time
to its initial accuracy of +3.5
to 5.0 seconds/day. And the
most important thing for Tim
Thompson: the watch has never
stopped.
The best stories are drawn from everyday life - for instance, that of Canadian Tim Thompson. He lives in
the northeastern part of Ontario in the Timmins region, where the climatic conditions are very harsh. The
area is known for extreme temperature fl uctuations: in summer the mercury rises to 40 °C, dropping to
–50 °C in winter. But this story is particularly interesting because Tim Thompson has been the proud pos-
sessor of the U2 diving watch made by Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main since December 2005.
Tim Thompson proudly shows off his much-loved U2.

Aerobatic pilot relies on SINN watches
RALF NIEBERGALL
This is not a coincidence. After
all, safety is the most important
thing in aerobatics. The family
has owned the plane since 1980.
Built in 1967, this "Ferrari of the
skies" is a true oldtimer, in which
Ralf Niebergall completed his
pilot's training.
He got his pilot's license in 1987.
Since then he has put 1,400
hours of fl ying time under his
belt, over 600 of them in aero-
batics. He became familiar with
the SINN brand while serving in
the army. A hobby has turned
into nine successful years of col-
laboration with the company.
"With regard to SINN, I'm a true
believer. The company manu-
factures pilots' watches that
withstand enormous stresses and
are absolutely reliable. Which
is vitally important to me as a
pilot", he explains. What sounds
like a platitude has a concrete
background. Airplanes like the
Marchetti have the shortcoming
that their fuel tank indicators do
not always function accurately.
In order to calculate the fuel
quantity and fl ight time, Nieber-
gall used to rely on the
pilot's chronograph Model 103
and the navigation cockpit
chronograph Model NaBo 54.
More recently, this task has been
accomplished with the aid of
the duochronograph Model 757
UTC. "I know that these watches
will never let me down. No other
brand can compare to a SINN
watch", says Ralf Niebergall of
the indestructible functionality of
the watches.
With his aircraft, a Siai Marchetti SF-260, Ralf Niebergall arouses nostalgic memories among the spec-
tators at air shows. But when it comes to modern time measurement on the ground and in the air, the
40-year-old aerobatic pilot from Neuwied relies exclusively on watches made by SINN Spezialuhren zu
Frankfurt am Main.
RALF NIEBERGALL relies on his Model 757 UTC duochronograph.

Located at the southern tip of
South America, Patagonia has
two very different topographies.
Western Patagonia, which
belongs to Chile, is a moun-
tainous area of stone and ice,
with innumerable fjords and
Pacifi c islands. The spectacular
peaks of the Andes command
respect as they tower in the
sometimes gray, sometimes
blue sky. The landscape seems
surreal, bizarre, mysterious.
Eastern Patagonia is larger
and belongs to Argentina. “You
will fi nd nothing there. There
is nothing in Patagonia.”, the
Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges
wrote of this tranquil, largely
deserted place. What Borges
meant with “nothing” is the sheer
vastness, the seemingly endless
space, the unceasing wind. The
explorer Ferdinand Magellan
went ashore in Santa Cruz, as the
east coast is called, in 1520, and
it was he who gave the region
the name “Patagonia.” Because
of their size, he called the native
Tehuelche Indians “patagones,”
a reference to a giant named
Patagón in a chivalrous novel
popular at the time.
The wild and breathtakingly
beautiful region of Patagonia
has become home to 39-year-
old Christian Moser, a native of
Austria who emigrated to Chile
in the year 2000. Stretching
4000 kilometers along the west
coast of South America, Chile
has several very diverse climatic
zones.
Moser, who claims to have an
“adventurer gene,” lives in Puerto
Natales. The city with 19,000
inhabitants serves as the base
camp for excursions into the
famous Torres del Paine National
Park and for tours of Patagonia.
The fact that the next closest
town is 250 kilometers away gives
an indication of how vast and
remote this part of the world is.
Moser joined the Austrian military
when he was 19 and received
special training as a paratrooper.
One of his missions took him to
Cyprus, where he served for ten
months in 1990-91 as a member
of the UN Rapid Reaction Force.
After undergoing additional
training programs including
survival training, and after visiting
many other countries, he came
to Chile to work as a free-lance
trekking and mountain guide. Of
course, his passion for modern
hiking and mountain climbing
was instilled in his home country
and honed through his military
training. The decision to move
to Chile was of his own volition.
He had always had a fondness
for South America, and the
mountains, glaciers, lakes and
forests of Patagonia convinced
him to stay there.
For nearly ten years now, Moser
has been organizing and
leading trekking and mountain-
climbing tours for adventurous
“There is a place where you feel like if you were any closer to your Creator, you could shake hands.”
This is the poetic claim Chile uses to attract tourists to Patagonia, and it aptly describes the beauty
and grandeur of the region. Patagonia is defi nitely off the beaten track – indeed, for many it is the very
epitome of remoteness and adventure. Perhaps that is why this part of the world, for which there are no
fi xed geographic boundaries, seems so magical and irresistible.
The 757 DIAPAL proves a reliable companion in Patagonia
CHRISTIAN MOSER
Christian Moser: Organizer and leader of trekking and mountain-climbing tours.

Europeans. The tours are very
challenging, both physically and
mentally, for their participants.
Not only do they have to deal
with boulders and heaps of
rubble, they sometimes also
have to get up in the middle
of the night to go mountain
climbing. There are also extreme
temperature fl uctuations,
particularly in northern Chile,
along with steady winds of up to
140 kilometers per hour, paired
with high-altitude sandstorms in
the mountains. At elevations of
more than 5500 meters, the air is
thin: venturesome mountaineers
have only 50 percent as much
oxygen as they are normally
accustomed to.
“For our mountain expeditions,
optimal acclimatization and the
use of state-of-the-art equipment
are a matter of course,” Moser
says on his website, www.mos-
eractive.cl. And of course, that
state-of-the-art equipment also
includes his watch. His constant
companion since September
2009 is the 757 DIAPAL model.
Because he wears it over his
sleeve, it is exposed to extreme
weather conditions.
A long-time fan of mechanical
watches, Moser has been inter-
ested in robust timepieces he
can rely on 100 percent since his
days as a paratrooper. And he
knows he can count on his 757
DIAPAL. His tours last several days
and are organized with military
precision. A reliable watch is
indispensable for adhering to
the strict schedule. “Because we
often have to climb mountains
in the middle of the night, it’s
essential for me to have a watch
I can read easily in the dark. So
the large luminous triangle on
the bezel of the 757 is very helpful
to me,” Moser says. And the TEGI-
MENT and DIAPAL technologies
have also proven themselves
under the extremely diffi cult day-
to-day conditions in Patagonia.
“I’m extremely satisfi ed with my
watch. It is perfect for tours in
the wilderness, because in spite
of the cold, the rocky boulders
and the sand, it shows hardly
any signs of wear and tear, and
still runs perfectly. It’s resistant to
abrasions, and it’s designed to
be extremely functional, with no
superfl uous frills. And although
it may look a little clunky, it feels
good on my arm.”
Moser offers an extreme
example to demonstrate that
the 757 DIAPAL leaves absolutely
nothing to be desired in terms
of precision, functionality and
freedom from fogging: “Once
I left the watch out in the cold
overnight. It was 25 degrees
below zero, at an altitude of 4300
meters. Early the next morning I
lowered on a rope into a geyser
that was about 50 degrees
hot. Even after this extreme
temperature difference, the
watch still worked. And thanks to
its dehumidifying technology, it
didn’t even fog up.” No wonder
Christian Moser considers the 757
DIAPAL the best there is, thanks
to its technological superiority
and “quality based on years of
experience.”

Germanischer Lloyd Certifi es SINN Diving Watches
The background: time plays a
crucial role in survival on every
dive. Diving watches must
therefore be waterproof, reliable
and durable, and guarantee
perfect readability in all lighting
and water conditions. The infor-
mation we provide about our
diving watches is thus not merely
captured in words, but proven in
practice as well.
Testing for watertightness and
pressure resistance
Since 2005 Germanischer Lloyd
has been testing our diving
watches for watertightness and
pressure resistance.
In accordance with these certifi -
cation standards, the U1 and the
U1000 series are pressure-resis-
tant to 100 bar, while the U2 and
U200 series are pressure-resistant
to 200 bar and the UX series is
actually pressure-resistant to
any accessible diving depth.
For this series, Germanischer
Lloyd has confi rmed the pressure
resistance of the case to 12,000
meters and of the movement to
5,000 meters diving depth.
The tests are repeated at regular
intervals on all of these models
in order to document the
consistency of the quality.
Premiere: certifi cation for com-
pliance with European diving
equipment standards
In a standardized test situation,
will a diving watch deliver the
same reliable performance as,
say, a breathing apparatus? To
answer this question, we were
the fi rst who have watches
tested and offi cially certifi ed
according to the European stan-
dards for diving equipment. Also
these tests are accomplished
at regular intervals for all these
models.
The testing and certifi cation
according to the European
standards EN 205 and EN 14143
was completely new territory
for both sides. This was the
case because the standards
for diving equipment cannot
be applied to watches without
modifi cation. The experts at Ger-
manischer Lloyd thus adapted
the standards appropriately and
defi ned two series of tests. In
the fi rst of the two, they put the
So what does Germanischer Lloyd have to do with a watch manufacturer from Frankfurt am Main? The
renowned company tests and certifi es our diving watches according to a variety of criteria: One test
focuses on watertightness and pressure resistance, while a second test procedure covers something
never done before in the watchmaking industry: certifi cation in accordance with the European stan-
dards for diving equipment!
U 31 of the German Navy, a boat of the 212A class with fuel cell propulsion. Our U1, U2, U200, U1000 and UX diving watches are made of the same anti-magnetic steel.

timepieces in a test cabinet for
three hours at –20 °C, then for
three more hours at +50 °C. The
timepieces were subsequently
checked for accuracy and
functional reliability at both tem-
peratures. In a second test the
watches had to withstand three
hours at –30 °C and 3 hours at
+70 °C with 95% humidity.
The result:
temperature resistance and
perfect functionality were doc u-
mented and certifi ed for the
watches in the U1, U1000, U2,
U200 and EZM 3 series after both
tests. The watches from the UX
series were also certifi ed, but
due to their battery operation
and oil fi lling, they were
subjected to a modifi ed test
involving temperatures between
–20 °C and +60 °C.
The shipping "TÜV"
Germanischer Lloyd, based in
Hamburg, is responsible for the
technical safety of more than
5,700 ocean-going vessels. Its
guidelines constitute a safety
standard accepted worldwide
for maritime shipping.
Founded in 1867
In the 19th century, those who
entrusted their goods to a ship
or sailed on board as a crew
member or passenger had to
play it safe. Shipping magnates
and merchants didn't want to
rely only on the good reputation
of the shipbuilder or captain.
After all, the technical quality
of a ship was crucial even then.
In 1867 various shipping company
owners took the initiative and
formed a committee to advise
on issues of ship classifi cations.
Today, Germanischer Lloyd
is one of the market leaders
worldwide in the area of ship
classifi cation.
Documentation issued by Germanischer Lloyd certifying the models U1, U2, UX and EZM 3 according to the European standards for diving devices EN 250 and EN 14143.
Two U1 models as well as a case are lowered into the pressure chamber.
