HI EVERyONE, I am pleased to be elected President of the Singer Car Club and I will do

my duties to the best of my ability over the next 12 months.

The club has instigated a few changes for the coming 12 months. These changes are by no means permanent and we are always open to new ideas and ways to improve the Club by attracting new members and getting our Singers out on the road as often as possible.

One of the changes we have made is to instigate a Club Facebook page. Many thanks to Sue Matthews for her hard work in getting it up and running and maintaining to the high standard it is today.

We hope by having a social media page more of the younger crowd will find us and be interested in learning more about the Singer marque. We can only hope!

Another new position has opened up and that is Event Coordinator. Stephen Bitmead has taken on this role with enthusiasm, as can be seen by the many updates to our events calendar which is looking pretty good for the year.

All members please have a think about organising a run to an interesting venue. It’s really not that difficult.

Even if you have an idea for a run, but cannot organise it, please email Stephen Bitmead with the details and he may be able to put it all together.

The more we all help, the easier and more fun we will have.

Another change is having our meetings at North Adelaide bi-monthly instead of monthly. This is on a 12 month trial and it will be evaluated at the next AGM.

The reason for the change in the frequency of meetings was to relieve some of the workload on some of our members who have other work commitments. Also to save petrol costs for those who travel long distances to attend our meetings.

We welcome Phil Keany and family to our Club and we hope he will attend our meetings and events whenever his work and family life permit.

By the time this goes to print Easter will be well and truly over, but I hope everyone enjoyed the break and stayed safe.

After restarting the motor, it would not idle, so with lots of slowing down and clutch slipping we made it into Christies Beach where I found a clear patch off the main road and altered the fuel mixture and bumped the idle speed up.

Although running rough we decided to continue on to McDonalds on Glen Osmond road to meet up with the rest of the run participants.

After bacon & egg rolls, followed by coffee we departed for the Adelaide Hills International Symposium, consisting of various international artists.

The run up to Hahndorf on the freeway, was fairly straight forward apart from the leader Ivan Margitich who thought he was in his LeMans competing in the Adelaide Grand Prix. We did manage to keep him in sight — although he was just a small speck on the horizon at times.

After arriving at the sculpture sight, which was in Hans Heysen’s backyard, we wandered around admiring the work these artists were doing.

It was amazing to see them create beautiful works of art from large slabs of rock.

One piece that had not been started must have been at least 2 metres in length by 1.5 metres square, so they were not just little rock sculptures, they were huge works of art.

The sculptures were very interesting to look at – and to see them being created – but as we had limited time we had to leave that area, as the next thing on the agenda was a tour of “The Cedars” which was Hans Heysen’s residence.

The tour was very informative and we saw some stunning works of art mixed in with the original furnishings.

We had two tour managers – the official one and Sue Margitich, who has been there before and was well informed.Top: A clutch of Singers in the car park.

RECIPE OF THE WEEKSusie Margitich recommends this

recipe for

Devilled Almonds

Ingredients• 2 cups blanched almonds• 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil• 1 teaspoon salt• ¼ teaspoon chilli powder or ceyenne

pepper• Optional – a sprinkle of paprika

Method1. Steep 2 cups almonds in just boiled water

for 5-10 minutes. Remove and drain well.2. Slip off the skins. This can be laborious

so see if more than one pair of hands can help, or buy the almonds already blanched from Charlesworths or Ditters.

3. Heat 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil over moderate heat and cook almonds, stirring constantly, until golden.

4. Drain on paper towel and sprinkle with a little salt and the spices to your choice of flavour. Dust off the excess salt and spices and serve in a small bowl.

5. Nuts can be stored in airtight containers until ready to serve with drinks.

ROOTES GROUP DAYIt has been agreed by all clubs that the second Sunday in November will henceforth be called Rootes Group Day by our clubs.

The schedule is: Humber 2014, Hillman 2015, Sunbeam 2016, Singer 2017, etc.

ONE TOUGH HARLEY GUYIt is reported that in July 2012, a group of bikers from Liverpool were riding south on the M6 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Thelwall Viaduct. So they stopped.

Their leader, a short fat man of 57, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the Motorway Police, and says “What are you doing?”

She says “I’m going to commit suicide.”

While he didn’t want to appear “sensitive” he didn’t want to miss a be-a-legend opportunity either, so he asked, “Well, before you jump, why don’t you give me a kiss?”

So, without hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that ... and it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another one.

After they finished, the biker gets approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers and even the Police and says, “Wow! That was the best kiss I’ve ever had Honey! That’s a real talent you’re wasting. you could be famous if you rode with me. Why are you committing suicide?”

“My parents don’t like me dressing up like a girl.”

It’s still unclear whether she jumped or whether she was pushed!

To get to the remote sites for his paintings, Hans Heysen towed his “pop-top” caravan (built in Adelaide in 1931) with his early model Ford.

Stephen and Wendy Bitmead were suitably impressed by Hew Chee Fong’s sculpture.

After the tour we all headed off to the Beerenberg Gardens for a picnic lunch under there gazebo in the car park.

In the car park, there were a lot of people who found the little cars interesting and took a lot of photos. “Black Betty” owned by Jeff and Maureen Vale was admired by all and one chap even asked to have his photo taken in front of her.

After lunch we left the car park and set off on our different ways for home. Although the day was getting colder, the trip home

was uneventful and we made it home safe and sound.A great day with good company and nice cars..

A MAJOR decision had to be made in May whether Vida & I attend the SA Singer goal run or head off to the historic Winton race track for the annual historic car races.

Winton has been on the “bucket list” for a while as we had never been and we had some friends also going to the race meeting — Winton won the toss.

We set off at 6 am Friday morning in the dark and, except for missing the turn-off to Callington and ending up in Mount Barker ( I was talking and did not see the turn-off), everything went OK after we set the GPS for our destination.

The trip was long, but fairly uneventful and we finally reached our cabin at Midlands Caravan Park at about 5.30 pm that evening. It was situated about 30 minutes from Winton at Lima South near Lake Nillahcootie.

Saturday dawned and it was cold, foggy and overcast, but as we neared the Winton race track it started to clear and eventually turned into a pleasant cool day.

Our friends, who had been before, gave us some details on the track layout and the best place to view the race track. We positioned ourselves on a mound near the start, just before the first bend in the track.

The race day started with the classic motorcycles, followed by sidecar events – and the men and woman who ride the sidecars are absolutely crazy.

They go like a bat out of hell with a passenger who leans out at all angles to keep the bike and side car on the ground. One crashed at the first bend and an ambulance took one of them to hospital. In another race the bike rider took off so fast at the start line, that and the sidecar passenger fell off.

The rest of the day was entertaining with Formula Fords and vintage cars in various time trials and races.

The view we had was great. The cars would all take off from the start line and race into the first bend juggling for position, which caused chaos in some races resulting in panel work being needed on some cars at the end of the race.

The races were well planned. As soon as one finished another started, so it was very busy and noisy all day.

We managed to wander down to the pits where we saw two Singer Specials – one was the Sulman Special, which had a Holden grey motor with triple carbies on it, the only thing Singer I could see was the badge; the other was a red Singer Special, and although we did not see Nigel Gray’s LeMans in the pits, we did see it in two races on the track.

WINTON HISTORIC CAR RACES – continued

We also came across an MG that won the 1936 Victor Harbor Grand Prix driven by Les Murphy. It’s current owners said the car was the same as 1936 except for the motor which had been replaced.

As well as the vintage and classic cars on the race track, the car park was full of spectators’ classic cars they driven to the race track and put on display for the public. Overall, we were kept busy watching the races and wandering amongst the classic beauties in the car park.

While looking at the cars in the car park we saw Trevor Leech, Andrew Bull and Ted & Laurette from the Victorian Singer club who had volunteered for marshalling duties at the track.

Sunday afternoon we decided to head back to Victor Harbor. That way we could break the drive up into two days instead of one, so after spending the night in Bendigo we arrived home Monday evening. It was a hectic but very enjoyable weekend and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in Classic and vintage cars. Various classic Specials line up in the pits.

Where Did the Term ‘Glove Box’ Come From? From Diane Wright

IN the early days of the automobile the use of gloves was considered essential, not only as a style statement for the discriminating, often wealthy driver wearing a pair of white, gauntlet gloves, but

also for utility reasons to keep the hands warm. Many early automobiles didn’t come with heaters, and driver and occupants were forced to don heavy gloves to protect their hands.

Many early vehicles did not have enclosed cabs and driving to church with the family on those cold Sunday mornings required everyone to wear a pair of gloves. It just makes sense to keep the gloves in a special compartment in the car so they would always be handy.

In England, and in certain areas of the northwest United States, glove boxes are still referred to as “jockey boxes”. The World Detective website is one of few that offers a plausible explanation for this term. A jockey, of course, is a person who works with horses, and according to this site, the term jockey carried over to include one who works on horseless carriages. A bit of a stretch, possibly, but it’s the only explanation available.

OLD ADELAIDE GAOL RUN – from Georgia Forbes (Rob Martin’s daughter)

ON the 25th of May, The Singer Car Club of South Australia went to the Old Adelaide Gaol. Before going to the Gaol, everyone who was going met up at Villies Bakery for

breakfast. Once we arrived at the Gaol, we went inside and began exploring.

One of the first buildings we saw was the 1841 cell block, which was one of the Gaol’s earliest buildings. It was really intriguing because it had been used for solitary confinement for the prisoners.

Another part of the prison that interested me was the condemned cells in yard Four. The cells had mesh doors so that the guards could keep a close eye on the prisoners occupying them.

I felt surprised when I found out that there had only been one female prisoner hanged in the Gaol – she was Elizabeth Woolcock.

Elizabeth was convicted of poisoning her husband and hanged in December, 1873.

Page 15: Singergram vol 27 no 2 jun 2014

SINGERGRAM Page 15 JUNE 2014

OLD ADELAIDE GAOL – continued

I also felt upset because I wasn’t sure if she’d been tried and found guilty when she might have been innocent.

By far my favourite building was the Hanging Tower, where they hanged prisoners who were put to death for their crime.

It was really interesting because it was quite old and held a lot of the Gaol’s history.

I felt queasy when I noticed the beam from which they hung the rope that hanged the prisoners.

Overall I really enjoyed the day and it was amazing to find out all that information about the Old Adelaide Gaol and South Australia’s criminal past.

Our trip to the Gaol inspired me to write a story about a prisoner’s life in the Old Adelaide Gaol.

THE Historic Motor Vehicle Club of Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsular held it’s third British Classic Tour, on the 4th May, with an outstanding turn out.

There were more than 200 British cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles registered for the event with nearly all marques present, some of the vehicles were fully restored others in oily rag condition.

The huge display of shiny and not so shiny cars brought the public out in droves. The weather was looking doubtful a few days before the event, with strong winds and rain, but thankfully the wild weather blew over and we had a lovely day with blue skies, a few puffy white clouds and a mild sea breeze. The event was held on the lush lawns of Warland Reserve right in the heart of Victor Harbor. Many of the entrants took time out to visit the many attractions surrounding the reserve as well as visiting some of the fine eateries that were available.

Many of the cars on display that were from local South Australian car clubs who have decided to make the British Classic Tour an annual Club event. Amongst the cars on display were four cars from the South Australian Singer Club, Ivan and Susie Margitich with their British Racing Green Singer 4AD Tourer, John and Vanessa Eason with their Singer 9 Special, Deidre Solly in her black 4AD Singer Tourer and Stephen & Vida Schild in their red 4AD Singer Tourer. The Singers attracted a lot of attention from the general public due to their uniqueness and rarity. The event started with Devonshire tea in the marque which included large scones with stacks of jam and cream, and hot tea or coffee before the tour started at 11 am. After the Clerk of the course made a short speech the 200 plus cars were flagged off by a brave kilt wearing Scotchman.

The tour, which took approximately 90 minutes, wound it’s way along the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsular before heading inland around Parawa and then down around the picturesque Inman Valley road, then back to Victor Harbor, where the entrants drove down the main street through the large start finish archway to the display area. Many entrants enjoyed a picnic lunch while others took advantage of the local eateries, until the trophy presentation at 2.30 pm. Trophies included Best Presentation, Best Saloon, Best Convertible, Best Commercial Vehicle, Best Motorcycle and Best Motoring Fashion.

unfortunately none of the Singer Club members won a prize, but it was a great day out with lots to see and do. We look forward to next year’s British Classic Tour.

ANNUAL DINNER – from Jeff Vale

THIS year’s Annual Dinner (or lunch) was held on Sunday, 29 June at the British Hotel in North Adelaide, thanks to organisation by Susie Margitich. The venue proved an

excellent choice.

We had a great crowd of Singer club members and partners who all enjoyed an excellent meal in semi-private surroundings.

This event offered the opportunity to display our newly acquired Singer Car Club flags that are to be used at future events such as the All British Day.

These flags are 3 metres high and are double sided, so they display ‘correctly’ when viewed from either side.

There are two of these flags and each is designed to be held in place beneath the wheel of the one of the display cars.

During the lunch our president, Stephen Schild, presented a trophy for the Club Member of the year to Ivan Margitich. Congratulations Ivan – a worthy recipient.

NEVER say Never again! That’s what I said after the restoration of the Singer 4AD...

How did it happen that I have yet another basket case Singer in two piles in two sheds? Well, I can blame John Eason for that.

While talking to John at the British Classic Tour here in Victor Harbor, he said he was about to buy a 1939 Flood bodied Singer ute from the son of a chap who died 30+ years ago.

Me being me, said, “If you find that you don’t want to go ahead with the restoration, let me know and I could be interested.”

Out of the blue one day about a fortnight ago, I received a phone call from John .. “ you still interested in that ute?” (Or something like that – I think it may have been “Hey sucker come and pick the ute up!”)

After arrangements were made to go out to John & Vanessa’s home at Gawler, just to have a look at it, naturally we towed a car trailer behind our ute, just in case.

Well, one look at that sad, pathetic ute made up to look like it was driveable with a Shannon’s ‘Look & Admire but do not touch’ card on the bonnet, made me want to do something with it.

Plus, the price was right!

We towed it home in bits and pieces and, with the help of John who delivered the chassis the next day, it has found a new home.

STEPHEN’S ‘NEW’ UTE – from Stephen Schild

The car appears to have most of its components, apart from needing a lot of work – it needs a radiator, two rear mudguards, and yes that is the garage floor you can see through the rear tub and front floor panels, and the motor needs reconditioning – not much, just a few years of time and money.

Keep an eye on this magazine for updates, or a ‘for sale’ advertisement.
