BRUNEI / KOTA KINABALU – SUNSET DINNER CRUISE
Depart Brunei 0030 Arrive Kota Kinabalu 0110
We’ll be met at the airport and transferred to Hyatt Regency Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. Because of
our late arrival, we have the day at leisure with breakfast and lunch at the hotel. Kota Kinabalu
delivers some of the best sunsets in the whole of South East Asia—even better when paired
with a unique dining experience on the North Borneo Cruises. Take sightseeing up a notch with
coastal views from a breezy upper-deck and create treasured moments under a starlit sky as
you glide pass Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront.
At 4pm, your tropical evening on the North Borneo Cruise begins at Sutera Marina Jetty. Get
ready to become acquainted with the charms of Kota Kinabalu on a whole new level. Your
evening unfolds along the sultry sun-tinged South China Sea, cruising past the islands and
water villages that dot Sabah’s west coast. You are free to wander around the vessel. Panoramic
ocean views, warmth of the setting sun and gentle sea breeze grace the upper deck while a live
band serenades the ethnic themed air-conditioned restaurant below with acoustic favourites.
Dinner will be served buffet style. Time to sink your teeth into Sabah’s most sought after
culinary experience.
As the sun sets and the stars come out, Kota Kinabalu’s coastline now comes alive with
dazzling city night lights. The North Borneo Cruise will glide across the Waterfront as you
indulge in dessert or your next glass of wine. Approx 7.00pm, your rendezvous at sea comes
to an end. You will disembark from the cruise at the Sutera Marina Jetty.
Overnight Hyatt Regency Hotel (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day Three Monday 8th June
MARI MARI CULTURAL VILLAGE / KOTA KINABALU CITY TOUR
After another fabulous breakfast at our Hotel, we’ll be picked up from our hotel and drive
approximately 20 minutes to Mari-Mari Cultural Village. Visit each tribe’s traditional house to
learn about each tribe's ancient cultures and take part in some in-house activities. You’ll love
the cultural performance before we move on to the Dining Hall. You may shop for handicraft,
take photos or just enjoy the natural surroundings. Try delectable traditional and fusion cuisines
before the end of the tour.
Note: Visit to the Village is at 1000hrs.
Please bring along drinking water bottle, insect repellent & hat.
In the afternoon after your lunch, we’ll continue to enjoy a city tour. The tour includes a brief
visit to Tanjung Lipat, which offers panoramic scenery of the Gaya Island, South China Sea,
Tun Mustapha Tower and the Kampung Likas village. Then on to the Kota Kinabalu City
Mosque, recognized as one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia. Visit the Puh Toh Tze
Buddhist temple before we drive to Signal Hill for a bird's eye view of the city, Atkinson Clock
Tower and Australia Place. Discover Sabah Museum's unique Heritage before we return to
hotel.
Overnight Hyatt Regency Hotel (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day Four Tuesday 9th June.
KINABALU PARK/ WAR MEMORIAL/ SABAH TEA PLANTATION
After breakfast this morning, bring your luggage down as we’re leaving Kota Kinabalu today.
We’ll be picked up from our hotel and drive 2 hours overland to the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu.
We make a short stop at Pekan Nabalu market to sample local fruits in season and to stretch
our legs. Visit the Kinabalu Natural History Gallery and Mountain Garden in Kinabalu Park
Headquarters. If weather permits, take a guided walk on one of the trails in the cool surrounding
to explore the montane forest.
Then, we’ll make a very touching visit the Kundasang War Memorial Park to learn about
Sabah's WWII history. It’s dedicated to the British and Australian soldiers who died in the
Sandakan POW camp during their death marches to Ranau. It also recognises the suffering and
sacrifice of the native population of Sabah. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy great photos with
the majestic Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and is the highest
mountain in the Malay Archipelago.
Overnight at Sabah Tea Garden. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day Five Wednesday 10th June
SABAH TEA/ FACTORY/ OVERLAND SDK/ AGNES KEITH HOUSE
After breakfast, we’ll head to the tea factory for a very informative tour and learn how tea is
processed. You’ll love our scrumptious lunch at the Sabah Tea house, overlooking the
picturesque valley and Mount Kinabalu.
After lunch, we’ll travel overland to Sandakan, (approximately 4 hour’s drive) where we will
visit the famed Agnes Keith’s house formerly home to the famous American author who
penned the book ‘Land below the Wind’. Afterwards, enjoy your afternoon tea and scones at
English Tea House (pinkies up!) before being dropped off at our hotel. Sandakan was the
former capital of British North Borneo until 1946. The town prospered in the early days due to
its port with visiting traders from around the world. Sandakan is an important town to
Australian and British WWII history with the infamous Death Marches commencing here in
1945 and ending in Ranau. After WWII the capital moved to Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu).
Overnight Fourpoints Sheraton (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day Six Thursday 11th June
GOMANTONG CAVES / SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE
After breakfast at our beautiful Sandakan Hotel, we’ll drive to Gomantong Caves and explore
the biggest bird’s nest caves in Sabah. Last time, we were lucky enough to see a wild orangutan
in a tree near the entrance to the cave. Magical! And we actually saw the birds’s nests being
harvested. Now for the absolute highlight of the trip – our stay up the River! We’ll continue
the journey to Sukau on the Kinabatangan River, check in to the Sukau Rainforest Lodge, and
take an afternoon river cruise in search of wildlife and birds using a boat with hybrid system
of outboard and electric motor (depending on river current).
We have been SO lucky on previous trips to see pygmy elephants playing on the banks of the
river – and crossing it! We’ve also seen Proboscis and Macaque monkeys, hornbills, snakes,
and the elusive Orangutans! You’ll love our candlelight dinner overlooking the riverbank
followed by slide presentation and interpretation by naturalist guide.
Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge – Superior. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Note: Every boat for the river cruises are equipped with outboard engines and electric motor. With its clean and quiet operation, the electric motor will be turned on to manoeuvre the boat only during wildlife viewing (if location and river current permits). This way, you’ll be able to truly enjoy the wildlife experience without disturbing the peace and quiet of the natural surroundings.
Day Seven Friday 12th June
OXBOW LAKE / SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE
Before brekky, we’ll take a 6.00 a.m. morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to
Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, we’ll enjoy an
educational tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with our in-house naturalist. After
lunch, join our in-house Orang Utan Talk activity. In the afternoon, we proceed for another
river cruise for more wildlife.
Overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge – Superior. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day Eight Saturday 13th June
SUKAU/ BORNEO PRIMATES
After breakfast, we’ll return early to Sandakan overland by bus. Afterwards, you’ll be
delighted by our visit to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. We proceed to watch a
video show about the plight of the Orang Utans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the
Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding
of the orang utans at 1000hrs, and then we continue to the newly completed enclosed nursery
area for young orang utans. We’ve been lucky in the past to have some orangutans just walk
along the boardwalk beside us! Unbelievably cute! We’ll also visit the Borneo Sun Bear
Conservation Centre to learn about conservation of the world’s smallest bear.
Note on Camera Use at Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre:
