A SENTENCE IS:
a group of words that has a subject and a predicate (verb)
and expresses a complete thought.
A FRAGMENT IS:
an incomplete thoughtEx: When I don’t get enough sleep.
Riding my bike at the park.
A RUN-ON IS:2 or more complete sentences
written as though they were one sentence.
Ex: It rained everyday so we didn’t even get to enjoy the
beach.It rained everyday, we didn’t even get to enjoy the beach.
SUBJECT: Simple subject: the noun or pronoun
that tells what the sentence is about.
Complete subject: is the simple subject and all the words that modify or
complete its meaning.
SUBJECT EXAMPLES:
The big black dog on the porch by the swing barks at the fat yellow cat
in the tree.
dog is the simple subject
The big black dog on the porch by the swing is the complete subject.
PREDICATE:Simple predicate: is the verb or
verb phrase that expresses an action or a state of being about the subject
of the sentence.
Complete predicate: is the simple predicate and all the words that modify or complete its meaning.
PREDICATE EXAMPLES:
Michael Jordan jumped above the rim.
jumped is the simple predicate.
jumped above the rim is the complete predicate.
A CLAUSE IS: a group of words that has a subject
and a predicate (verb).
There are several types of clauses, but the only type of clause that can
stand alone as a sentence is an independent clause because it expresses a complete thought.
A SIMPLE SENTENCE : a sentence with only one
independent clause and NO dependent clauses.

SIMPLE SENTENCE EXAMPLES:
The dog barked.The big black dog on the porch by the swing barked at the fat yellow cat in
the tree.
There is only ONE independent clause in this sentence which makes it a simple sentence.
A COMPOUND SENTENCE :
a sentence with 2 or more independent clauses and NO
dependent clauses
In other words, 2 or more simple sentences combined to make 1
compound sentence.
COMPOUND SENTENCE EXAMPLES:
The dog barked, and the cat ran.The dog barked; the cat ran.She wanted to go to the mall, but he wanted to go to the park.She wanted to go to the mall; he wanted to go to the park.
2 WAYS TO MAKE A COMPOUND SENTENCE:
To avoid a run-on, you must punctuate a compound sentence one of two ways:
1st – combine 2 independent clauses with a semicolon2nd – combine 2 independent clauses with a comma and coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
MAKING A COMPOUND SENTENCE:
Semicolon – I love English class; it is
the best!• You have 2 complete thoughts here: • I love English class. • It is the best.
We can combine these two simple sentences by using a semicolon.
