SIMPLE SENTENCE

• Subject + verb

• I love chicken.• Mary drove to the store. • The spaceship and the roller coaster are the most

popular rides at the fair.

COMPOUND SENTENCE

• 2 simple sentences joined by a – (a) comma + conjunction (FANBOYS) or – (b) semicolon.

Perry is my brother, and Jerry is my brother-in-law. (You) please make a smart decision, and (you) reject the proposal.You must obey the rules, or you can’t play. I took two aspiring tablets, but my headache did not go away.My little sister is an amazing soccer player, so she hopes to get a college scholarship.

Jack’s pig is groomed well; it’s friendly, too. Sarah wasn’t very optimistic she’d pass the test; she felt certain she was going to fail.

COMPOUND SENTENCE

• You cannot form a compound sentence using these types of conjunctions: – because, although, since, whenever

• That means if you EVER have a comma before or after these words, you are WRONG WRONG WRONG!– WRONG: Barbara is on unemployment now, since she got fired.

• RIGHT: Barbara is on unemployment now since she got fired.• RIGHT: Barbara is on unemployment now; she got fired.
