Who? • Austrian Holocaust survivor who became famous after World War II for his work as a Nazi hunter.•Wiesenthal survived the Holocaust but lost his mother and many other family members during the ordeal in which six million European Jews were annihilated.• He dedicated his life to documenting the crimes of the Holocaust and to hunting down the perpetrators still at large.

•Wiesenthal began gathering and preparing evidence on Nazi atrocities for the War Crimes Section of the United States Army. After the war, he also worked for the Army's Office of Strategic Services and Counter-Intelligence Corps and headed the Jewish Central Committee of the United States Zone of Austria, a relief and welfare organization.

He was born in Buczacz, Galicia (part of Ukraine); died of kidney disease in Vienna, Austria.
