1.0 Connecting to Simon Network Resources

1.1 Browser Support When accessing and interacting with Simon web-based resources, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is the recommended browser. However, to achieve greater functionality when using Blackboard, Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser.

1.2 Network Credentials

All students are issued a single set of network credentials. From here forward they will be referred to as “Simon credentials” and “NetID”.

1.2.1 Simon Credentials The Simon credentials require the username to be pre-pended with “UR\” at all times. These credentials will be used for your Simon e-mail. Example: ur\username 1.2.2 NetID Blackboard and River Campus Library resources are accessed via the NetID. The NetID is not pre-pended and will look similar to the example below. For more information about obtaining a NetID, go to: http://www.rochester.edu/it/netid . Example: asmith1

1.3 Email System

Email, calendaring, and contact systems are fully functional through web interface as well as through an outlook client. Please see pages 11 and 15 for email access setup and usage.

1.3.1 Email Storage Space Student e-mail accounts are given 500MB of storage. The system will begin to warn the user that they are approaching the limit at and after 450 MB. At 500 MB the user will not be able to send further email until their account is brought below 500MB. Email receiving will never be interrupted or blocked due to account size overages 1.3.2 E-Mail Forwarding While all students are issued a Simon e-mail address, it is the wish of some to not maintain a mailbox separate from their already existing personal or work account. In these cases, SSIT can, by request, simply point the student’s Simon address to another account specified by the student. (Note: SSIT will support forwarding or a Simon mailbox, but not both). 1.3.3 “Global Address Listing” (GAL) As a student of the Simon School, your name and e-mail information are published electronically within the University of Rochester’s “Global Address Listing”, or “GAL”. This is simply the comprehensive e-mail address book of the University and is accessible via Outlook. The GAL is used extensively by Simon faculty and staff to communicate with students regarding program and academic issues.

1.4 Blackboard

Blackboard (http://my.rochester.edu) is the University’s portal for accessing course materials.

Login to Blackboard with your NetID - See example in Section 1.2(b) How do I get my NetID? Once you have your URID, (eight-digit University Identification number), go to the University’s main website’s NetID page at: http://www.rochester.edu/it/netid/ Click on the “University Account Initialization” Link under the New to University heading. Your “Student ID number” is equal to/same as your “University ID number”. Enter your “Student ID number” and your birthdate to learn your NetID and set your password for the first time. If you already know your NetID but have forgotten your password, you may reset your password using your secret questions and answers.

6 | P a g e

How do I get access? Student and faculty accounts are created automatically based on registration data. The system receives course listings and enrollments periodically. These automatically generate accounts for the instructors on record for courses, and the students enrolled in those courses. If you are not enrolled in courses, you may not automatically receive an account.

An email is sent to the enrolled student’s Simon email address with a link to Blackboard (http://my.rochester.edu) and their NetID along with a link to the University’s NetID website (http://www.rochester.edu/it/netid) to reset their password.

Questions/Who to Contact: If you have questions about your courses in Blackboard, check the Student FAQ link (http://www.rochester.edu/it/myrochester/faq.html) or contact [email protected] (Simon School’s onsite Blackboard specialist)

1.5 River Campus Library Resources Online

Simon EMBA students can access library materials, including e-journals, databases and course reserves, from off-campus computers using their NetID (See Section 1.3). Go to: http://www.library.rochester.edu/ When you click on the link of a library resource with restricted access, you will be prompted to login with your NetID and password.

1.6 myIdentity Service

myIdentity is the Identity Management System for the University of Rochester. From the myIdentity page, one can manage passwords and accounts. Simon students can access the myIdentity site using their NetID credentials. Go to: https://myidentity.rochester.edu When you click on/or manually insert the link above into the address bar of your browser, you will be prompted to login with your NetID and password.

9 | P a g e

Once logged in, you will see the self service page of the myIdentity site:

10 | P a g e

When resetting a password or if you have forgotten your password, you will use the My Password section on the myIdentity page. This is where it can get a little tricky – You will see the following page when changing your password but you will also see 2 Account Types. By default both accounts are checked which will reset your password for your Simon credentials as well as your NetId credentials. Please make sure you are aware of the account password(s) you are resetting. If you have difficulty or need assistance please call (585) 275-2000.

Only Check The Accounts You Want To Reset Your Password For.

Enter Your NetID Password Here – Do Not Use Your Simon Credentials.
