Quick Installation

This guide contains the SIMM Memoryinstallation instructions in abbreviated form. For detailed information about how toinstall and use the SIMM Memory, see“Part 2: Installation Guide” on page 2-1.

Memory is sensitive to static electricitydischarge. Before opening thestatic-protective bag containing the memory, touch the bag to an unpainted metal surfaceon the computer for at least two seconds toneutralize static electricity.

Before opening your computer, disconnectattached devices and ac power cords.

Installing Memory

Refer to the illustration to install one ormore SIMMs.

Part 2: Installation Guide

Introduction

Be sure to retain your proof of purchase. Itmight be required to receive warrantyservice.

Information about the location of the SingleInline Memory Module (SIMM) is found inthe option installation instructions in thehardware manuals that come with yourcomputer.

Read the following information before youremove your SIMM modules from theirprotective packing material.

Handling Static-Sensitive Devices

Attention: Do not take the SIMM outof the static-protective bag until you areready to install it. Static electricity candamage the memory and yourcomputer.

When you handle memory or othercomponents, take these precautions to avoidstatic electricity damage:

Limit your movement. Movement cancause static electricity to build uparound you.

When possible, remove the memoryfrom the static-protective bag andinstall it into the computer withoutputting it down.

If you must put the memory moduledown, place the static-protective bagon a level padded surface, such as abook binder, and place the memory onthe bag.

Identifying Your Memory

The following list contains generalinformation about identifying the memory inyour computer.

Make sure your computer allowsmemory upgrades. Some computers donot.

The SIMM modules are installed on

the system board or on a memoryexpansion adapter in your computer.

A SIMM has contact-card-edgeconnectors on the bottom edge. Yourcomputer might require Single InlinePackage (SIP) memory which has pinconnectors.

A SIMM memory module can have 30,72, 144, or 168 contact-card-edgeconnectors. Your memory must matchthe connectors in your computer.

Different computers have differentmemory requirements. Many requireyou to install a group of SIMMmodules at the same time. Othersrequire you to install a specific amountof memory. For information aboutyour computer requirements, see thedocumentation that comes with yourcomputer.

2-2 SIMM Memory

Page 10: SIMM Memory - infania.net PDF/d3qu3mst.pdf · 2. Tilt the SIMM to the vertical position and lock it into position. On some computers, the SIMM is installed vertically and locked at

Some computers do not allow you tomix memory modules of differentspeeds. Make sure your computersupports the operating speed suggestedby the manufacturer for the SIMMsyou are installing.

Laptop computers often require specificmemory upgrade packages. They donot accept standard memory upgrades.Refer to the documentation that comeswith your computer for informationabout the installation of upgrades foryour particular model.

Some computers support only parity orECC memory modules. These systemsdo not work with mixed combinations. The memory modules must be allparity or all ECC.

Installing SIMMMemory

For detailed instructions about installingSIMM modules in your computer, refer tothe documentation that comes with yourcomputer.

Use the following procedures to remove oldSIMM modules and install new modules.

Step 1: Opening the Computer

1. Turn off the computer power anddisconnect all ac power cords.

2. Remove the computer cover. Forinformation about opening yourcomputer, see the documentation thatcomes with your computer.

Step 2: Removing Memory

If (because of your computer'srequirements) you need to remove SIMMmemory already in the memory slots, referto the illustration and use the followingprocedure.

1. To neutralize static electricity, touchthe static-protective bag containing thenew SIMM to an unpainted metalsurface on the computer frame for atleast two seconds.

2. Place the bag containing the newmemory on a flat padded surface suchas a book binder. Do not place it onthe computer cover or other metalsurface.

To reduce the chance of staticelectricity buildup, touch your hand toan unpainted metal surface on thecomputer frame while unlocking andremoving the SIMM.

3. Locate the SIMM you want to removeand open the locking tabs at the sidesof the connector.

4. Tilt the SIMM .1/ forward and lift upas shown in the illustration.

5. Place the SIMM on top of the bag thatcontains the new SIMM memory.

Step 3: Installing Memory

Refer to the illustration and use thefollowing procedure to install one or moreSIMMs.

1. Remove any old SIMM memory fromthe top of the static-protective bag andremove the new SIMM memory fromthe bag.

2. Install the new SIMM without puttingit down. Hold the SIMM module bythe side edges. Do not touch the rowof metal contacts on the bottom edge.

3. Align the notch in the SIMM .1/ withthe notch in the socket.

4. While touching your hand to anunpainted metal surface on thecomputer frame, slide the SIMM intothe socket as shown in the illustration.

5. Align the holes at either outside edgeof the SIMM with the plastic pins onthe locking tab. The SIMM will be ata slight angle.

In some computers, you must installthe SIMM in the vertical position andlock it into position at a slight angle.

7. You might need to adjust one or bothof the locking tabs located at each endof the SIMM connector to make surethat the SIMM holes fit over the pinsand the SIMM is securely in place.

Step 4: Updating theConfiguration

Replace the computer cover, reattach alldevices and power cords, and turn on thecomputer power switch.

Depending on the model, your computermight automatically reconfigure the newmemory or it might display an errorrequiring you to run the configurationprogram on the setup diskette that comeswith your computer.

Machine is a specified, fixed period commencingon its Date of Installation. The date on yourreceipt is the Date of Installation, unless IBM oryour reseller informs you otherwise.

During the warranty period IBM or your reseller,if authorized by IBM, will provide warrantyservice under the type of service designated forthe Machine and will manage and installengineering changes that apply to the Machine.

For IBM or your reseller to provide warrantyservice for a feature, conversion, or upgrade,IBM or your reseller may require that theMachine on which it is installed be 1) for certainMachines, the designated, serial-numberedMachine and 2) at an engineering-change levelcompatible with the feature, conversion, orupgrade. Many of these transactions involve theremoval of parts and their return to IBM. Yourepresent that all removed parts are genuine andunaltered. A part that replaces a removed partwill assume the warranty service status of thereplaced part.

If a Machine does not function as warrantedduring the warranty period, IBM or your resellerwill repair it or replace it with one that is at leastfunctionally equivalent, without charge. Thereplacement may not be new, but will be in goodworking order. If IBM or your reseller is unableto repair or replace the Machine, you may returnit to your place of purchase and your money willbe refunded.
