Adult Day Care
A non-residential facil-ity specializing in providing activities for the elderly and/or handicapped persons. Most cen-ters operate 10 to 12 hours per day and provide meals, social/recreational outings, and general supervision. For participants who would otherwise stay at home alone, the social stimula-tion and recreational activities often improve, maintain, or delay decline of physical and cognitive function. Adult day care centers enable caregivers to work or to have a break from their care-giving responsibilities.

Most facilities offer 24-hour supervision and an array of support services. An Assisted Living Facility helps residents with personal care, such as: bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, grooming,

Estate Planning and Legal Services
Estate planning involves assets and the various forms of ownership that those assets may take. Through estate planning, individuals can determine how and by whom assets will be managed during your lifetime if you ever become unable to manage them yourself; when and under what circumstances it makes sense to distribute assets during your lifetime, how and to whom assets will be distrib-uted after death, how and by whom your personal care will be managed, and how health care decisions will be made during your lifetime if you become unable to care for yourself.

Funeral Homes
When a loved one dies, grieving family members and friends often are confronted with dozens of decisions about the funeral - all of which must be made quickly and often under great emotional duress. What kind of funeral? What arrangements should you plan. How much will it cost? There is an increasing trend toward pre-need planning - when people make funeral arrangements in advance. Funeral homes arrange services in accordance with the wishes of the family and the de-ceased. The funeral home takes care of the necessary paperwork, permits, and other details, such as making arrangements with the cemetery, and providing obituaries to the news media.

Home Care Providers
Home care providers or private duty care providers are companies that provide home care aides, companion care, homemaker services, assis-tance with activities of daily living in the client’s place of residence (i.e. home, hospital, assisted living, or nursing home). These providers are not generally certified or licensed home health care agencies and generally are not able to provide services which are reimbursed by the Medicare program, some Medicaid programs, and some private insurance programs.
Care is generally provided on an hourly basis by trained caregiv-ers. The most common methods for covering the cost of private duty home care is through long term care insurance benefits, out of pocket/private payments, and some Medicaid or other governmental programs.

Home Health Agencies
Home health agencies are li-censed by a state to provide care to a patient in the patient’s resi-dence. Care must be prescribed by the patient’s attending physi-cian as part of a written plan of care and the patient must be generally homebound. Home health agencies are certified by Medicare and Medicaid to provide care services that may be reimbursed by Medicare, Medic-aid, or private insurance. Some home health agencies provide services to patients within a certain geographic coverage area. Home health care services provided by a licensed and certi-fied home health agency on an intermittent basis may include: skilled nursing; home health aide services; physical therapy; occupational therapy; speech therapy; social worker services, personal hygiene care, and light housekeeping.

Hospice Care Services
Hospice is a method of caring for the terminally ill that helps provide comfort and support to patients and their family members when an illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Hospice neither pro-longs life nor hastens death. The primary goal is to improve the quality of a patient’s last days. Hospice care can be provided in the home, hospice facility, nursing home, or hospital. Medical, social, spiritual, and counseling services can all be part of hospice care, depending on the individual patient and family needs. Medicare and many private health insurance programs cover hospice care but require specific patient eligibil-ity, including certification by a physician that the patient is terminally ill with 6 months or less to live based on knowledge about the normal course of a specific illness.

Independent Living
CommunitiesIndependent Living com-
munities are a group of variable sized apartments that provide seniors with the opportunity to experience as much freedom as they choose among their peers in a secure setting. These com-munities are designed for those who are relatively physically and socially independent. The major benefits are maintenance free living, socialization opportuni-ties and numerous activities. Other amenities may include housekeeping services, pest con-trol, apartment maintenance, parking, utilities, cable televi-sion, transportation and one or more meals served in a common dining area. These communi-ties do not provide custodial or medical care. Neither long term care insurance nor federal/state assistance living programs will cover the costs of living.

In addition to skilled nursing services and certified nursing assistant services, the nursing home resident can also receive needed physical, occupational, speech, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Nursing homes that participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs are subject to federal requirements regard-ing staffing and quality of care for residents. Medicare covers nursing home services for 20 to 100 days for beneficiaries who require skilled nursing care or rehabilitation services following a hospitalization of at least three consecutive days. The program does not cover nursing care if only custodial care is need.

Orthotics & Prosthetics
Orthotics is concerned with the design, development, fitting and manufacturing of orthoses, which are devices that support or correct musculoskeletal deformities and/or abnormali-ties of the human body. The word orthotic is often used to describe or name a foot-supporting device or insole, or a more complex device to control joint motion. An orthotist, for example, is a professional who works by prescription from a physician to ensure the proper application of an orthosis.
A prosthetic provider is a professional who creates artifi-cial limbs or orthopedic braces. Not only do prosthetic provid-ers create, fit and help patients manage their artificial limbs, but they also will continue to see the patients who wear their devices for the patient’s lifetime - con-tinuing to manage, adjust and replace prosthetics as necessary.

Senior ApartmentsSenior apartments are usually
age-restricted 55+ or 62+ and follow HUD regulations which allow for such “age discrimina-tion”. If 55+, at least one person in the apartment must be at least 55 and the community must have no more than 20% of all residents under age 55. If 62+, than all residents must be at least 62. Exceptions are made by HUD for younger renters if they are handicapped. Some require that the renter is able to live independently. Sometimes eligibility allows only elderly, disabled, and handicapped. Some rentals are based upon the income of the resident and may be eligible for government subsidies and vouchers.
