Celebrating Diversity in Winemakers

Our History:

1803 - Erza Blossom bought the property for $70

1853 - Reverend Henry Ward Beecher, brother of

Harriet Beecher Stowe who is author of Uncle

Tom’s cabin, purchased the property “Blossom

Hill” for $4,500. Rev. Beecher was a popular

preacher active in the women’s suffrage and aboli-

tionist movements. He loved the views from the

top of the hillside and it is form this vantage point

that he proclaimed, “From here I can see the very

hills of Heaven.” These are the views that can be

seen today when you sit on the Rose Terrace at

dusk and are reminded of the legendary parties

that took place on this same hillside 100 years ago.

1869 - Civil War General John F. Rathbone pur-

chased the property for $8,000 where he razed

Beecher’s Cottage and built his mansion, he

named “Wyndhurst” (not today’s mansion build-

ing). Gen. Rathbone owned a prosperous stove

works foundry that became the biggest in the

world. He was also a philanthropist who is credit-

ed with bringing the first computer to the U.S. in

1855.

1893 - John Sloane, a relative of the Vanderbilts,

(Emily Vanderbilt married his brother William and

built Elm Court in 1886), and co-owner of W&J

Sloane Furniture Co., bought the property for

$50,000 and built the mansion that stands today,

keeping the name “Wyndhurst”.

1894 - Designed and built by Peabody & Sterns,

the construction of John Sloane’s mansion

“Wyndhurst” was not complete. John Sloane com-

missioned Frederick Law Olmstead, the landscape

architect of Central Park, to design the lawns and

gardens. Wyndhurst, referred to today as the

Mansion, was known as a “cottage”. This was the

“Cottage Era” where they were defined as second-

ary residences with a minimum of 30 rooms and

20 acres.
