Clinical Corner: Removing Urinary Catheters at 2400 vs 0600
It has long been nursing tradition to remove indwelling urinary catheters at 0600. However, evidence has shown that patients have better outcomes if the catheter is removed at 2400. In one study it was found that removing the indwelling catheter at 2400 decreased patient’s anxiety while also increasing the amount of urine voided on the first and second void (177ml v. 268ml and 195 vs. 322ml respectively). Overall, the evidence in this study showed that patients experienced less urinary retention than their counterparts who had an indwelling catheter removed at 0600. This lead to earlier discharge for the 2400 group. 64% of patients who had their indwelling catheters removed at midnight were discharged on the same day of removal versus 23% in the group who had their catheters removed at 0600. None of the same day discharge patients were later readmitted for urinary retention. Although it was not tested in this study, the author believe that the patients returned to a normal voiding pattern due to the patients being able to sleep after the 2400 removal. Sleeping would cause a decrease in anxiety and also is hypothesized to allow the bladder to fill more slowly and fully. Reference: Kelleher, M. (2002). Removal of urinary catheters: Midnight vs. 0600 hours. British Journal of Nursing, 11(2), 84-90.
ETA MU/SNA BRIDGE WALK/RUN FALL 2012
Eta Mu Members and the Rutgers Student Nurses Association would like to invite all members, family and friends to come out for their second bridge walk/run this fall
Our first fundraising walk/run occurred this spring and was successful raising money for both organizations in our quest to support nursing students and community leaders. Please come out for another fun filled weekend morning this fall for exercise, camaraderie and service for a good cause.
Stay tuned for more information on this event in the near future
