PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATIONTheGeneralElectricP42DC,alsoknownastheGenesis,isthecurrentprimarypassengerlocomotiveofAmtrak.Producing4250HPandwithatopspeedof110mph,theseunitsareseennationwideonshortandlong-distancetrains.Equippedwithmarkerlightsoneachend,theunitsarealsoseeninserviceonpush-pulltrains.Amtrakoriginallyrostered208oftheunits,numberedfrom1-207.Mostnotableamongthesearethefivespecially-paintedHeritageunits,whichwereunveiledin2011forAmtrak’s40thanniversary.Eachoneispaintedinadifferent“phase”orpaintschemetohighlightthedifferentimagesofAmtrakovertheyears.Sadly#66,thePhaseIIunit,wasinvolvedinagradecrossingaccidentin2016andwassubsequentlyretired.In2018,Amtrakreleased#130inasimilarscheme,andtodayitcarriesonthelegacyof#66.

ViaRailownsafleetof21unitsnumbered900-920,andtheyhavebeenactivesince2001.Theselocomotivesareequippedwithbothstandardandemergencyhornsets.Someunitsalsoareequippedwithabrightspotlightonthecenterofthenose,inadditiontothestandardheadlightsandditchlights.
