    SIGMAs Flat Glass Level Gauges are reliable means for accurate measurement and direct observation of process fluids.

    These are designed to match industry requirements of ruggedness and material mix to widen the scope of application in

    process tank, pressure vessels and other containers with fluids varying from ordinary water to highly corrosive chemicals.

    THE SYSTEM: The Flat Gauges are inevitable means for process fluid measurement when it comes to severity of

    conditions. The medium to be measured is made available for direct measurement outside the vessel without any

    special preparations and provides on line monitoring. The principle of liquid maintaining the same level makes this

    system very precise and reliable. The fluid attains its level in the chamber of the level gauge as that of the vessel and is

    viewed through a glass window. SIGMA Gauge Valves form a major component of the flat glass gauges. Two gauge

    valves at the ends of the gauge chamber are connected to the tank. Under normal operations, the valves are kept

    wide open causing the pressure to equalize in the system thus permitting the liquid to seek its true level for observation

    along the visible length. SIGMA offers Reflex and Transparent type Flat Level Gauges as required by the industry.

    The Reflex Level Gauge consists of a chamber designed to have one

    or more front windows i.e on one side of the chamber. Each window

    consists of a special glass called reflex glass that is cushioned

    between cover plates and chamber . The reflex glasses are provided

    with prismatic grooves on the side in contact with the medium. As a

    result of the difference in refractive index, light rays entering the gauge

    from outside are reflected or absorbed. The light rays entering the 0steam or gas space strikes the grooves face at an angle of 45 C,

    thereby being refracted into the opposite groove face from which it is

    reflected back to the direction of observation. The steam or gas space

    appears silver while and the liquid space appears black. This

    eliminates any possibility of error in reading the liquid level The Reflex

    Level Gauge does not require an illuminator.

    The Transparent Level Gauge consists of one or more windows on

    each side of the liquid chamber. The transparent glasses are crystal

    clear and have very smooth surfaces. The glasses are cushioned with

    gaskets, between cover plates and the chamber. Sigma large

    chamber reflex and transparent level gauges are designed to give a

    more accurate reading for liquids that have a tendency to surge or

    boil, that cannot not be obtained with the standard gauges.

    SIGMA Reflex Level Gauge is recommended for clean, colorless and

    non viscous services. Sticky fluids tend to coat the glass and result in

    wrong readings, Erroneous indications will also occur if fluid is near

    saturation conditions or when the boiling or condensation in gauge

    glass affects the refraction of light through the prisms.

    SIGMA Transparent Level Gauge is recommended for colored or

    viscous fluids, interface detection and direct observation of the

    physical state. A source of light can be provided by a illuminator which

    is located at the back of the gauges, enabling readings of the liquid /

    steam interface. Quick closing of the gauge valve feature allows the

    needle to plug the seat very quickly and seal off the process.

    WELD PAD FLAT GLASS LEVEL GAUGE

    The System

    WELD PAD Flat Glass Liquid Level Gages are designed to become an integral part of the vessel, Weld pad liquid Level Gages are directly mounted to the tank or vessel to be measured.

    SIGMA Welding Pad Gages are used where conventional gage and valve construction is impractical because of solid matter in suspension, under conditions where the thermal error caused by piping to a gage glass cannot be tolerated or where space requirements suggest their use. Included are applications involving high vibration, highly viscous liquids or liquids with considerable amounts of solids. SIGMA offers end users a flat or radius weld pad gage in varying lengths and configurations. It is possible to monitor color, clarity and level of a gas / liquid interface. Because there are no nipples through which the process liquid enters the gage, clogging potential is eliminated.

    SIGMA Welding Pad Gages are made in both Reflex and Transparent Types. Reflex gages are used where liquid reading only is required. Transparent gages are usualy used where installation is made on each side of the vessel to give see-through visibility.

    SIGMA weld pad gages comprise of six basic components. Each component may vary slightly, depending on the desired physical and mechanical properties for the gage. refer picture:

    1. Chamber - provides a pressure retaining metallic surface for weld attachment tothe tank or vessel. Vessel chamber surface can be radiused to match tank orvessel curvature. Slot(s) are machined into the chamber to provide directvisualization of the process fluid.

    2. Gasket - seal the gap and prevent leakage between the chamber and the glass.Gaskets are available in a variety of materials for compatibility with the media inthe gage.

    3. Cushion - acts as a protective buffer between the glass and the cover. For propersealing, cushions must be as hard or harder than the gasket material.

    4. Cover - protects the glass assembly from external hits and provides a flat, rigidsurface that is used to evenly compress the gage assembly.

    5. Bolting - compresses the components between the covers & weld pad chamber.

    Mica Shield - (Optional on transparent gages) used to prevent the process media from contacting the glass.

    Load Consideration: Whenever it is necessary to slot the tank because of the nature of the liquid or there is need to observe the color or interface of the liquid, the following facts must be considered: Standard and welding pad gages will withstand a loading due to the pressure within the gage itself, but they are not designed to replace the tank strength lost with tank wall is cut. SIGMA has no control over the loading in which the pressure vessel will impose on the pad. It is therefore impossible to rate welding pad gages. The tank fabricator must provide suitable tank wall reinforcement to prevent the pad from being distorted during welding or while under hot operating condition.

    1. Drain cocks are supplied fo all gauge glasses with material same

    as that of valve body having 1/4" NPT connection as standard.

    Plugs for Vent is standard and drain cocks are provided wherever

    called for.

    2. Illuminators are of weather proof & explosion proof type giving an

    even diffusion of light over the entire lengths of gauge glass

    without glare or blind spots. Scales are available where positive

    measurement of liquid is required. Scales are offered in Aluminum

    / SS / weather resistant plastic, graduated in mm / inches.

    3. Internal cooling tube, Expansion coil, Balancing pipe or

    Frost shields (for very low temperature) or any other special

    requirements are available as optionals.

    Off Set Valves: Having an advantage of permitting the inside of

    the gauge glass to be cleaned easily with minimum disassembly,

    by removing vent and drain plugs (or other connection), a straight

    passage through the chamber is obtained.

    A soft brush or water jet is an ideal way to clean. This is possible

    because the spindle is away from the center and does not block

    the path of cleaning.

    Auto Shut Off: This safety device blocks off fluids from being floored

    outside of the tank in the event of glass breakage. Both the upper

    and lower valves come equipped with this feature called ball check.

    Upon glass breakage, a ball that is floating in normal condition, get

    drawn by the surge of the fluid to spill out of the broken section.

    This ball then plugs the valve seat and seals off the fluid flow.

    Closing of the valve stem plugs the seat and also dislodges the ball

    from the other end of the seat.

    Gauge Connection: Welded construction is opted when viewing is

    predetermined and when rotation of the main chamber is not

    required. Valve connection to the main chamber can be provided

    with union threaded connection to facilitate disassembly for cleaning

    or for turning the chamber to the desired angle of visibility. This is

    however possible for top and bottom valve mounting option only.

    While ordering please specify:

    Type of valve, center to center distances, opening conditions, body

    material, connection size & type. Special type of gauge glasses as

    per customer's requirement can be supplied.

    SIGMA's Magnetic Level Gauge's operation is based on elementary

    principles of physics:

    - Liquid attains the same level in communicating vessels.

    - Unlike magnetic poles attract and like poles repel.

    - Last but not the least, Archimedes principle.

    Sigma Magnetic level gauge consists of :

    A vertical chamber consisting of a non magnetic tube of suitable

    diameter and thickness

    A float, where-in magnets are placed radially exactly on the

    liquid level line (floating point)

    Two horizontal stub pipes with specified end connection

    An indicator outside the vertical chamber comprising of a set of flags

    that contain a set of permanent magnet encapsulated, which can rotate

    on their horizontal axis or a magnetic follower that moves along

    in a transparent tube.

    Optional shut off valves at the two stub pipes to isolate the level gauge

    A non magnetic scale with graduations in mm/cm/inches

    As the float moves up and down with changing level,

    the following action takes place:

    - In case of the flag type, the flag indicator consists of bicolored flags that

    are contrasting dark and bright colors. The bright represents the liquid

    level and the dark color depicts the empty or interface fluid level.

    The float immerses only on the upper fluid and floats on the lower for

    which the specific gravity suitability is maintained.

    - In case of the follower type, the indicator consists of a encapsulated

    magnetic follower that follows the rise and fall of the magnetic float.

    The principle of liquid maintaining the same level makes thissystem very precise and reliable. The fluid attains its level in theglass tube of the level gauge as that of the vessel and is viewed through the glass tube. SIGMA Gauge Valves form a major component of the tubular glass gauges. Two gauge valves atthe ends of the glass tube are connected to the tank. Undernormal operations, the valves are kept wide open causing the pressure to equalize in the system thus permitting the liquid toseek its true level for observation along the visible length.

    SIGMAs Oil Level Gauge / Indicators (Acrylic) are designed

    for measuring / indication of level of oil or other transmission

    liquids. The principle of operation is liquid maintaining its

    level by virtue of gravity. The Oil Level Gauge comprises

    of a solid block of transparent acrylic (oil chamber) with

    graduations as required. The Oil Level Gauge is connected

    to the storage tank through a single limb or by having two

    connections drawn from the chamber to the side of the tank.

    It also contains a vent and a drain. This is typically used for

    low pressure and low temperature applications.

    SIGMAs Oil Level Gauge / Indicators (Glass) is rugged,

    compact and reliable gauge for visual indication of oil

    levels in small tanks.

    The Level Gauge consists of a toughened borosilicate

    gauge glass tube fitted between metallic end blocks and

    banjo bolts through a set of o-rings. A slotted steel guard

    is provided enclosing the glass guage to provide protection

    from accidental damage. The gauge is mounted parallel

    to the tank, to form a closed loop causing tank liquid to

    seek its level in the gauge.

    SIGMA tank level indicators are float operated target type suitable for liquid level gauging of fixed roof, floating roof,

    open type vertical storage tanks and underground sumps for water, oil, solvents etc. The tank level indicators are of

    simple construction and are easy to install. They are very sturdy and require no maintenance. A float operated tank indicator

    comprises of a float that is located within guide cables. The guide cables whose ends are fastened on to an anchor bar

    are kept straight and wrinkle free by tension devices. The anchor bar is either grouted or welded to the tank bases.

    The float cable is wound over a set of pulleys, which are secured in the pulley housing. One end of the float cable

    bears the float and the other end carries a pointer assembly with a counter weight for balance. Tank level indicator float

    operated type is for fixed roof, floating roof, open top and under ground storage tanks.

    The various advantages of the float level indicator is to provide continuous liquid level measurement for bulk storage

    applications is further enhanced by the addition of level control. SIGMA float level indicator cum switch is specifically

    engineered to reduce maintenance and enhance reliability. FLI with Level Switch is the best solution in critical areas

    where it is not possible to use Level Switches in the inside of the tank. Typical application area includes Floating Roof

    Tanks, Underground Sumps where switching is not possible internally / externally.

    The principle of the float level indicator is to transmit movement of the float to the pointer over a set of pulleys by means of a float wire/cable. The pointer houses a magnet. A side mounting level switch is attached to the side of the board of the float level indicator. As the pointer moves closer to the magnetic field, the repelling magnet inside the switch housing actuates a set of micro-switches. The magnet latch remains in the new position until the pointer comes back within the repelling magnetic field to actuate the micro-switches.

    SIGMAs AUGUST series Automatic Tank Gauges are designed to provide continuous liquid level measurement

    for bulk storage applications. The AUGUST is a float actuated instrument that provides continuous and reliable

    liquid level measurement, specifically engineered to reduce maintenance and enhance reliability.

    In principle, the AUGUST utilizes a large stainless steel float that is attached to a perforated stainless steel tape to detect the liquid level.

    The float traces the liquid level rise and fall due to the constant pull-back tension force provided by a power spring. The precisely perforated tape

    engages pins on a sprocket drive wheel that in turn drives the measurement counter mechanism. The float is guided between the guide wires

    that are kept straight/kink free through the tension devices. Alternatively, still wells that shall guide the float can be used where

    there is no provision for guide wires. This simple, rugged design makes the gauge to perform with negligible maintenance throughout its

    working life.

    Gauge Shaft seals for oil filling:

    AUGUST comes with an optional gauge shaft seals that allows

    the entire gauge head to remain in light oil, for longevity, smooth

    working and corrosion protection of main components in aggressive

    environments or where tank vapors can peek inside

    the gauge head.

    Gauge Check Handle/Striker:

    AUGUST comes complete with an easy to grip gauge check

    handle. The gauge check handle when turned deflects the tape in the

    sheave storage assembly, thus picking up the tape and the float. This

    allows the testing of the power spring strength. It also is used for

    checking gauge calibration, plumbing of the float alignment, or

    freeing stuck-up gauges.

    Tape Keeper:

    AUGUST comes with a take keeper around the sprocket wheel

    that allows tape to be installed simply by inserting the tape

    around the tape keeper wheels.

    Tape Entry:

    AUGUST gauge head is uniquely designed to allow tape entry for

    both tank top mounting and tank-side mounting. The orientation

    while mounting remains unchanged and so is the viewing direction.

    Hoist Mechanism:

    AUGUST with an optional hoist mechanism is used to hoist the

    float to facilitate easy tank maintenance. It is also used for high

    viscosity liquids or the liquids which may solidify at ambient

    temperature. With the help of the hoist mechanism, the float is

    lowered at the time of measuring the level and is hoisted again.

    Gauge Body Protection:

    AUGUST comes with epoxy powder coating to reduce the

    amount of moisture entering the gauge head through normal

    breathing of the aluminum housing. It effectively seals the unit

    from water penetration.

    Note: AUGUST Gauge head is a purely mechanical device, hence enclosure as per IS:2147 is not applicable for this item.

    a. Guide Wires/Tension devices/Float are NOT required for floating roof tanks. Floats are required if Floating roof with float wel l is

    used. In this case, Guide rods may be used based on floating well tank dimensions. Accuracy of floating roof will depend purely

    on roof/float well movement. In case of floating roof the tape is attached to the floating roof itself. In floating roof tank installations,

    it is recommended that gauges be installed in a float well, rather than attaching the tape directly to the tank roof. The float well should

    contain a baffle to prevent the float from escaping, but also allow sufficient product movement to equalize the liquid level. No tape

    should be exposed outside of the roof or pipe work. If any section of the tape is currently exposed it should be replaced with a SS

    flexible cable,this will reduce measurement error due to wind drift. The connector between the tape and cable should not run over

    a conduit elbow (or pulley).

    SIGMA's Float Level Switch are compact solutions to monitor low, intermediate and high level in tanks. This rugged, quick

    mounting & maintenance free design is an instant choice for tanks with high insertion depths or inaccessible top and bottom.

    A small pivoted float forms the only sensing probe that projects within the tank. Typical applications of these sensitive and

    accurate devices include strong tanks, high-pressure boilers, sterilizers and process tanks.

    SIGMA Float operated Reed Level Switch are ideally designed for liquid level indication in tanks. The design is simple and

    compact. Typical applications are water, diesel, chemical storage and hydraulic tanks. The level switch consists of a sealed

    tube inside which hermetically sealed Reed Switches are placed at points where switching operations are required. The

    magnetic float raises / falls with the liquid level and operates / re-operates the Reed Switch (make or break on rise / fall of

    SIGMA's Conductivity Level Switches are simple, low cost and reliable instruments, for detection of conductive liquids. The

    Level Switch is available in single / multipoint level detection. A low alternating voltage is impressed between the active

    electrode(s) and the vessel wall / reference electrode. When the liquid comes in contact with the tip of the active electrode(s),

    an electrical path to ground is completed, closing the loop, resulting in flow of current. The current is transmitted to the control

    unit directly (in case of multiwire / integral design) or through a pre amplifier housed inside the probe head (in case of two wire

    design). The amplifier inside the control unit processes the signal and amplifies it to drive LED/ relay circuits.

    SIGMA's Pneumatic Level Switches are used in application where electrical switching is not recommended or electricity is

    not available. The working principle is the same, except that the magnet indirectly actuates a 3/2 valve for changeover. This 2system requires minimum 2 kg/cm clean filtered air, preferably through an AFR. In Order to protect the switch assembly

    from contaminants, filtered and dried gas/air supply is recommended

    Buoyancy force of process liquid on a float causes the float to move

    with the liquid's surface. Float movement pivots a magnet into the

    field of a like-charged switch magnet. As the magnets repel each

    other, the switch magnet moves, actuating the switch.

    Free swinging float arm

    - No cavities to clog (eliminates Float Stick)

    Magnetically activated

    - No seals to maintain / No leaks / No fugitive emissions.

    Operation is based upon simple buoyancy, whereby a float or a

    spring loaded weighted displacer rises following the liquid level. A

    magnetic sleeve, connected to the float / displacer, moves up and

    operates within a non-magnetic enclosure tube. The magnetic sleeve

    attracts a pivoted magnet, actuating a switch mechanism located

    out-side the enclosure tube to give NO or NC changeover. A fall of

    liquid level will de-actuate the switch mechanism

    The Transmitter consists of a float & guide stem assembly in non-

    magnetic material to achieve undisturbed flux. A chain of closely

    spaced glass encapsulated reed switches & resistors are placed

    inside the guide tube. During rise and fall of liquid level, the magnetic

    float moves & actuates a reed switch in the chain. The sensed voltage

    is fed to the transmitter located in the enclosure for conversion to a

    signal of 4-20 mA.
