Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a non-toxic European herb that has a tradition of treatment for cognitive deficits dating back to the Middle Ages. 1 Sage extracts have been shown to inhibit acetyl- cholinesterase. They also possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic properties. Clinical studies have demonstrated sage’s cognitive enhancing effects for primary, secondary, and working memory 2,3 when administered in an acute regime in healthy young and elderly volunteers. And, chronic administration has been shown to reduce cognitive decline in patients with Alzeihmer’s disease 4 . Clinical studies Scholey et al 3 demonstrated a clear benefit in key cognitive performance within 1 hour of administering 167mg and 333mg of Sibelius:Sage (“sage”) extract to 20 healthy elderly volunteers (65-90 years). Figure 1. Effects of a standardized extract of S. officinalis (167, 333, 666, 1332 mg) and placebo on cognitive factors derived from Cognitive Drug Research computerized assessment battery. Mean change from baseline scores are shown for a) secondary memory and b) accuracy of attention. Clinical studies cont...• Dose Response: Clear dose response

effect, with statistical significance consistently showing for 333 mg dose

• Effect of Treatment: Strong statistically significant effect over baseline at all assessment time periods for 333 mg dose, for Secondary Memory (recognition and recall tasks)

• Effect of Treatment: Statistically significant effect over baseline at 1, 4 and 6 hr assessment time periods (very strong at 4 & 6 hrs) for Accuracy of Attention (accuracy in choice and vigilance tasks)

• Effect of Treatment: Statistically significant effect over baseline at 1 hr assessment period for Working Memory (spatial and numeric memory – accuracy and speed of reaction)

In vivo studiesHowever, the challenge has been to standardize the cognitive benefits of sage with the multiple species, sources, and extraction procedures for the potent botanical. Using Sibelius’ Chronoscreen™, we have been able to demonstrate that there is a significant difference in biological activity of Sibelius:Sage (used in the Scholey 2008 study) over that of other sage sources and extraction procedures.
