Aikido - A brief history: Aikido, translated as “the Way of Harmony,” (Ai) Harmony, (Ki) Energy, and (Do) Way. The art was created from the hand-to-hand combat techniques of the Samurai of ancient Japan. Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei), “created” Aikido after many years of training in the Samurai “arts.” Aikido is a non-sport method of self-defense using controls and restraints rather than kicks and punches. Emphasis is placed upon developing poise, balance, flexibility, and self-confidence. Additionally, when training with a partner, one learns cooperation, harmony, timing, and control of oneself. Gozo Shioda-sensei created the Yoshinkan style after many years of training with Ueshiba-sensei. Yoshinkan can be translated as “the House of Cultivating the Spirit,” (Yo) Cultivating, (Shin) Spirit, and (Kan) House. The Yoshinkan style places great emphasis on the development of strong basic movements and techniques. The old adage, “to build a strong house, one must first, start with the foundation,” is used frequently. The Shuharikan Dojo was formed by Jon Sharratt, Gordon Shumaker, and Glen Giacoletto. On January 15, 1997, the Yoshinkai Honbu Dojo, Tokyo, Japan, officially registered the dojo. The dojo will be operated as a Minnesota non-profit corporation. The instructors of the Shuharikan hold Dan (Black Belt) ranking and are registered Yoshinkan Aikido instructors. The instructors are: Jon Sharratt, Gordon Shumaker, Glen Giacoletto, James Nolan, Maggie Murphy, John Seyer, Jeff Hansen, and Gil Warnacutt. The following is a brief explanation of Shuharikan, as adapted from Flashing Steel by Masayuki Shimabukuro and Leonard J. Pellman and from Japanese for the Martial Arts by Alexander D. C. Kask:

Shu-Ha-Ri literally means “Obey-Break-Separate.”

It is the Japanese term that describes the physical and Psychological progression of martial arts training and

the three stages of mastery of a martial way. The International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation, (IYAF), was created by Shioda-sensei in 1990 to help promote the growth and development of Aikido worldwide. If you are interested in more information or the bylaws of the IYAF, please see one of the instructors.
