Every moment hundreds of web pages are updated or dumped in the ocean of Internet. Computer users who are blind or visually impaired are finding this simple task a daunting one. Thanks to Shruti Drishti, a cost effective system for browsing conference web site. Shruti Drishti is a web page browser for visually impaired users, which allows a simplified representation of textual information available on the Web. A speech synthesizer can then speak out this information or it can be represented in Braille form. The text can also be presented on the screen according to the needs of partially sighted people. Shruti Drishti is a keyboard event driven web page browser for blind and visually impaired users, providing keyboard only accessibility using minimal keys. It also provides a large text window for partially sighted users and a standard web page browser so that users can work together with sighted workers.

1 INTRODUCTION Importance of web surfing for study material and other relevant information is increasing day by day. Every moment hundreds of web pages are updated or dumped in the ocean of Internet. Computer users who are blind or visually impaired are finding this simple task a daunting one. Thanks to Shruti Drishti , a cost effective system for browsing conference web site.

Shruti Drishti is a web page browser for visually impaired users, which allows a simplified representation of textual information available on the Web. A speech synthesizer can then speak out this information or it can be represented in Braille form. The text can also be presented on the screen according to the needs of partially sighted people.

Shruti Drishti is a keyboard event driven web page browser for blind and visually impaired users, providing keyboard only accessibility using minimal keys. It also provides a large text window for partially sighted users and a standard web page browser so that users can work together with sighted workers.

For information and content representation as audio Shruti Drishti incorporates speech synthesis services in English language. High-quality, Indian ascent female voice is provided.

Shruti Drishti functionality can be categorized as follows:

A. EXTRACTOR SYSTEM: It fetches data and extracts links as well as content text of a web page.

B. VACHANTAR SYSTEM: It converts links and content text into speech format to help the visually impaired persons to browse the web site through listening. This also provide facilities like:

• Pause/Resume speech

• Stop speech

• Change volume of speech

• Change rate of speech

2 APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Hardware Requirement:

• Recommended system requirement

Intel Pentium IV 1.5 GHZ, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 1.44 MB FDD, 48 X CD Drive, Multimedia Kit, Keyboard, Mouse, 15" Monitor. Modem/LAN card.

2. Software requirement:

• Windows 2000.

• Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0.

• Office 2000.

Note: The application assumes that user has a live Internet connection.

3 INSTALLATION Entire setup comprises of four individual setups in 3 cds. Installation is quite easy and simple. Please follow and provide necessary information wherever required during installation. The entire application setup requires approximately 800 Mb of memory space after installing application data and components. Make sure that the system has around 1.2 Gb of size free memory space during installation. Various components and services needs to be registered during the installation process so make sure that the login in which installation is carried out has necessary administrative rights.

Insert the CD into CDROM, installation software starts automatically, if not browse CD drive with the help of windows explorer and double click on the Setup.exe.

4 OPERATION Make sure that computer is ready for Internet browsing. Press CTRL+ALT+J for the start of the application or click on the Application (Shruti Drishti) icon.

At the time you start Shruti Drushti, the application will automatically contact the official web site of WORLD SUMMIT ON THE INFORMATION SOCIETY (WSIS) held in Geneva. Application fetches the web page data and starts processing the content of the web page. Each end of data processing is prompted by audio instruction “Web page downloaded successfully and data is extracted”.

Once the web page downloaded successfully, you can browse the web site through keyboard with the help of speech output or tactile reader. Please refer Appendix-I for functionalities of the various keys and its combinations.

4.1 Main Screen

Figure-1 Shows main screen of the application.

4.2 Help Pressing F1-key activates the HTML version of help documentation. User can browse through this help by performing operation for browsing other web pages. These steps are described below. F1-key acts as toggle between help documentation index and the web page on which help was activated.

4.3 Toggle Screen View

For the sighted persons F2-key has been provided. The main screen splits into two frames; top frame shows the selected web site page as such, while lower frame shows the links, content of the selected web page. There is third window in the lower frame, which shows the Braille equivalent of the selected text send to the Tactile Reader.

4.4 Getting Links on Web-page

User can browse Link’s on a web page by pressing F3-key . As soon as user presses F3-Key application tells how many links are there on that web page and then immediately it reads first link on the page. Now user can browse the links one-by-one by pressing DOWN and UP arrow keys.

Pressing DOWN arrow reads next link and pressing UP arrow reads previous link. To select a particular link and to go to that URL user has to press ENTER key.

If user is on first link and then presses Up arrow then it gives speech message that “You are on first link.”. Similarly if user is on last link and presses DOWN arrow key then it gives speech message that “You are on last link”.

4.5 Getting Content on Web-page:

User can browse the content through Listening or Reading. User can listen or read text contents of web page by pressing F4 key . User reads out the content text with the help of Tactile Reader Device.

4.6 Displaying the content for Partially Blind Peop le:

Press F7-Key for displaying the Content in Large font size and a reasonable background to help partially impaired persons to browse the web site.

4.7 Pausing / Resuming Speech: User can pause or resume speech by pressing SPACEBAR or F9-Key while listening. Once pressing the key pauses the speech and pressing it again resumes speech.

4.8 Stopping Speech: User can stop the speech by pressing either side CONTROL KEY or F10-Key .

4.9 Page-navigation on the web-site:

User can navigate on web site with the help of ALT+ LEFT ARROW and ALT+ RIGHT ARROW Keys. By pressing ALT+ LEFT ARROW keys user moves backward and by pressing ALT+ RIGHT ARROW keys user moves in the forward direction.

These operations can be carried out with the help of single keys F11 and F12.

4.10 Speech Volume Control:

User can change the default setting of the volume by pressing the HOME and END Keys. Pressing HOME Key Volume increases and pressing END key decreases the Volume.

4.11 Speech Rate Control

User can change the default setting of the Speech Rate by pressing the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN Keys. Pressing PAGE UP Key Speech Rate increases and pressing PAGE DOWN key decreases the Speech Rate.

4.12 Browse URL

User can go to a specific URL by pressing ALT + O key . Enter the url in the text box provided and click OK button.
