Introduction
• The cytoskeleton is a network of fibers extending throughout the cytoplasm.
The cytoskeleton organizes the structures and activities of the cell.
Cells need a (cyto)skeleton to:•create shape•change shape•allow movement
Types of Cytoskeleton
Composition of the cytoskeleton
• actin filaments (6-10 nm)• microtubules (25 nm) & associated proteins• intermediate filaments (11 nm) & molecular
motors • nano filaments (2-6 nm)
Motility and trafficking
actin filaments myosins
microtubules kinesinsdyneins
Intermediate Filaments
Molecular motors
Microtubules Actin filaments Microtubules
nano filaments
?
?intermediatefilaments
Function of cytoskeleton
• stabilization• intracellular transport• signal transduction
