IntroductionThe Scottish Hill Runners Calendar provides a comprehensive list of hill races in Scotland for 2009, and includes Highland Games, Mountain Marathons and junior hill races.Several championship fixtures from further afield are also included, such as the World Championship and World Masters races.

Although we have made every effort to ensure the information in the Calendar is accurate, neither the compilers nor Scottish Hill Runners can accept any responsibility forany errors or their consequences. We suggest that for any amendments to race details, you should check the Scottish Hill Runners website at www.shr.uk.com. For races atHighland Games events, we advise you to phone the organiser before travelling (particularly for the race’s start time), or visit www.albagames.co.uk.

If you find any errors in the Calendar, or have any amendments to make, then please e-mail the corrections to [email protected], or contact the Secretary(address below).

A team of SHR volunteers has helped to produce this calendar. Thanks are due to Chris Upson (team leader), Ian Nimmo, Malcolm Patterson, Ronnie Gallagher (championshipraces) and Louise Burt (advertising), plus Mark Johnston and Alasdair Anthony for Scottish Athletics information. Many thanks also to John Hepburn(www.wagtailgraphics.co.uk), who has designed and printed this calendar.

Scottish Hill Runners (SHR)Scottish Hill Runners is an independent organisation providing services for hill runners in Scotland. Membership benefits include a regular newsletter, an annual journal and thisCalendar. We aim to provide information on all aspects of hill racing, training, long distance challenges, and non-competitive hill running in Scotland.

Committee: Dave Cummins (Convenor), Malcolm Patterson (Secretary: 6 Nigel Gardens, Glasgow, G41 3UQ. 0141 632 6986, [email protected]), Louise Burt (Treasurer),Ronnie Gallagher (Championships and Journal: 0131 661 5484, [email protected]), Chris Upson (calendar co-ordination) Ian Nimmo (membership), AndySpenceley (statistician) and Jamie Thin.

SHR annual membership runs from 1st January and costs £8 (£2 junior/student/unwaged); cheques payable to ‘Scottish Hill Runners’. The cost for additional members at thesame address is £4 each, but only one copy of each printed publication will be sent to that address. To join the SHR, please send your name, address, phone, email, club, dateof birth with cheque to Ian Nimmo (Membership Secretary) at: 5 Whitehouse Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 2EU; 0131 447 4735, [email protected]. Alternatively go to www.shr.uk.com/HowToJoin.aspx for instructions on how to complete the process electronically.

Race CategoriesThe UK Athletics Rules for Competition (1st April 2008) at www.ukathletics.net state the following:

(1) An “official UKA Fell Race” is one held under UKA Rules for Competition. (2) A fell race is one run on fell, hill or mountain terrain and shall be categorised as follows:

Category A(a) Should average not less than 76m (250 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).(b) Should not have more than 20% of race distance on road.(c) Should be at least 1.6km (one mile) in length.

Category B(a) Should average not less than 38m (125 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).(b) Should not have more than 30% of race distance on road.

Category C(a) Should average not less than 30.4m (100 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).(b) Should not have more than 40% of race distance on road.(c) Should contain some genuine fell terrain.

Race Length Categories(a) Category L (long) race is 19.3km (12 miles) or over in length.(b) Category M (medium) race is 9.6km (6 miles) and over but less than 19.3km (12 miles).(c) Category S (short) race is under 9.6km (6 miles) in length.

So, e.g., Ben Nevis is category “AM”, because it has 96m of climb per km, and is 14km long.

Junior age limitsUKA Rule 410 states that Race Organisers must stipulate age limits for their events. Many shorter races are suitable for juniors or have separate courses for juniors. UKA Rule410 specifies the maximum length of course that juniors are permitted to race:

Under 12 3 kmOver 12/Under 14 5 kmOver 14/Under 16 6 kmOver 16/Under 18 10 km

Minimum age limits are stated for each race in the Calendar. Age groups are defined by the runner’s age on 1 January 2009. N.B. So as an example, when a race states “Over 12”, this means that the race is only for runners who were 12 years of age or over on the 1st January (i.e., born in1996 or earlier).

There may be races where the organiser sets more restrictive age limits than those stated above – for example where there is a lot of climb or rough terrain. These age limitsare stated in the Calendar where known, but you are always advised to check with the race organiser before travelling.

If you would like a copy of the Junior Hill Running Race Calendar 2009, which is a separate listing of all hill races suitable for juniors, then please contact the Secretary (addressabove).

Runners and SafetyIndividual runners (as well as race organisers) have responsibilities with regard to safety. Precise requirements demanded by a race organiser will also depend on his/herinsurance arrangements. From 2003 it has been mandatory under Fell Runners Association Safety Requirements that ALL category A Long and Medium races requirecompetitors to carry windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the weather conditions, map and compass, whistle, emergency food (long races). Thisrequirement applies whatever the weather or time of year. Scottish Hill Runners very strongly recommends that all race organisers comply, at the very least, with thissensible requirement, irrespective of their other safety arrangements. Competitors should realise that if they breach an organiser’s safety kit requirements, they putthemselves and their fellow competitors at risk.

The key points for runners are: All hill race competitors have prime responsibility for their own safety. This is a risk sport. Arrive at the venue with as much kit as the organisers are likely to require you to carry on the day. This means windproof and waterproof full body cover, hat, gloves,

map, compass, whistle, food. Have the necessary skills to cope with any navigational problems you may encounter, whatever the weather. Complete a ‘short’ or preferably ‘medium’ category 'A' race before running in a 'long' one. Be able to recognise the signs of hypothermia, hypoglycaemia and heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Hypothermia: not responding to conversation; uncoordinated

movement and speech; inability to think clearly; wanting to carry on in adverse conditions; skin cold where normally warm, such as under armpit. Immediate action: wrap in warm clothing. Hypoglycaemia: confusion, ill co-ordinated movement and speech; weakness, hunger. Immediate action: drink glucose solution or suck sweets. Heat exhaustion: general fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, vomiting, fainting, cold/clammy or hot/dry skin. Immediate action: rest in a cooler place with feet elevated and drink (salty) water.

Know what the organiser's 'drop-out' procedures are and comply with them. As a minimum, if you retire you MUST notify the officials at the finish (and the nearestcheck-point marshal, if appropriate) before you leave the area.

If you see someone in trouble YOU MUST HELP, even if it costs you the race.

InsuranceScottish Hill Runners offers its own insurance policy as a privilege of SHR membership. This provides third party liability insurance for all SHR members as race organisers or asparticipants for any hill race. N.B: Race organisers should note that cover is not automatic - they must register their race with SHR (Ian Nimmo) and complete the safety sign-offdocument well in advance of their race. For more information, as well as the required documentation, go to www.shr.uk.com/Insurance.aspx; or contact Ian Nimmo as above .

Clubs affiliated to Scottish Athletics are covered by the UK Athletics insurance policy for all their organised athletics activities including any races promoted by the club. Racepromoters who are not athletics clubs may now affiliate to Scottish Athletics under the new category of associate membership if they wish to have their races covered by the UKAthletics insurance policy. Scottish Athletics rules require affiliated bodies to obtain a permit for any open race they promote. Race organisers therefore have a choice ofinsurance through either SHR, Scottish Athletics, or privately-arranged insurance.

Race organisers should carefully examine the available insurance schemes (there are differences!) and choose the one they judge most suitable for their requirements. For theScottish Athletics insurance, contact John McDonald at 0131 539 7320 ([email protected]).

Remember that gross disregard for accepted good safety practice may invalidate any insurance.

Please send the Secretary, Malcolm Patterson (address above), in confidence, a note of any problems, accidents, incidents or near misses that occurred during your race. These willonly be made public with your permission. You will be helping SHR to draw on your experience to offer a better service to runners and organisers.

Race Organisers PackSHR provides a race organisers pack, available by emailing [email protected], or online at www.shr.uk.com. The pack covers logistics of organising a race, safety, environmental issues and useful kit for the organiser. We are indebted to Scott McKendrick and Advertisign Direct for generous support of this initiative.

Race ResultsCould race organisers please send their race results to Ian Nimmo, [email protected], as soon as possible after the race, preferably as an Excel spreadsheet. Results willbe published on the SHR website at www.shr.uk.com. We would also appreciate a short race report to post on the website.

Calendar Entries for 2010Finally, could race organisers please email 2010 race details to [email protected], preferably by 31st October 2009.

June 6th/7th 2009

The LAMM is a 2-day mountain orienteering event that takes place each year in the Scottish Highlands. The emphasis is always on challenging routes in classic high mountain country. Those who regularly participate in the LAMM regard it as the connoisseurs Mountain Marathon. Last year we were based at Glenfinnan. Since 1994 the event has visited some wonderful locations:

2009 Scottish Highlands! 2008 Glenfinnan & Loch Arkaig 2007 Auchtertyre & Glen Lyon 2006 Assynt 2005 Isle of Mull 2004 Glencarron 2003 Spittal O’ Glenshee 2002 Braes of Balquhidder 2001 Ardverikie, Ben Alder & Corrour 2000 Glen Shiel & Knoydart 1999 Black Mount & Bridge of Orchy 1998 Corran & Ardgour 1997 Isle of Jura Classic 1996 Grey Corries & Mamores 1995 Isle of Mull 1994 Arrochar Alps We limit the number of teams to 500 and the event always fills to capacity. The limit ensures that we are able to visit fine venues that might otherwise be impossible to use. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere on Friday night at the Event Centre camping field allows friends to meet up and old acquaintances to be renewed. Wilf's Outdoor Catering provides Friday evening meals in the marquee and a post event meal.

We like to make our event exciting and build a sense of anticipation. Apart from providing an approximate travelling time, we keep the venue secret until just before the event so that the area is a 'surprise' to all competitors. We have been known to move 1000 of you up to 40 miles on the Saturday morning to an unexpected start so that you can enjoy the challenge of running over the mountains for two days as you head over the hills to finish back at the Event Centre.

Why not make a date with the LAMM and find out for yourself why many consider it the most enjoyable event of the year. We’ll see you in the Highlands.

MARTIN STONE Event Organiser

The race has several objectives: one is toencourage sailors to appreciate fell running, forrunners to appreciate sailing and for both toenjoy what must be some of the best sailing andhill running in the world; another is to help tobuild the self confidence of the youngsterssailing in the Youth Teams; yet another is toraise funds for various good causes; but themain objective is to provide a challengingexperience to sailors and runners who may betoo busy to devote weeks to sailing the Atlantic ortrekking in Tibet but who still relish overcoming a challenge whichis well beyond those normally encountered in our modern well insulated lives.

Although the race can be extremely competitive, for most people, it is not the thought of winning thatbrings them back year after year but simply the pleasure of sailing and running in the company of a great crowd of like mindedpeople. We all love the hills and seas of the Scottish West Coast and the race is just an excuse for the annual jamboreewhen we can celebrate our good fortune at being able to experience this great adventure in these wonderful surroundings.
