SUNHAKPEACE PRIZE
– Foundation –
(L. to r.) The founder of the Sunhak Peace Prize Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, H.E. Anote Tong, Dr. Modadugu V. Gupta and Chairman Dr. Il-Sik Hong
Sunhak Peace PrizeFoundation
The Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation was established in 2015 to promote and develop the Sunhak Peace Prize, an annual award given to individuals or organizations that have contributed substantially to peace and human development, for the sake of future generations.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation has its administrative headquarters in New York. The Foundation appoints an independent, international, and interreligious Committee of judges who evaluate candidates who have been submitted by members of the Sunhak Peace Prize Nominators from around the world.
The vision of peace that characterized the Sunhak Peace Prize is broad and comprehensive, including not merely the absence of war or conflict, but rather a wide range of areas of human endeavor such as education, sustainable development, peacebuilding, strengthening the family and civil society institutions, empowering women and girls, interreligious cooperation, and humanitarian service.
The Sunhak Peace Prize was established in order to help resolve worldwide suffering, conflict, poverty and threats to the environment, by promoting a comprehensive, future-oriented vision of peace. Sustainable peace in the 21st century can only be accomplished by resolving the tensions and conflicts we find throughout the world, by developing a global culture of mutual respect and cooperation. Based on the Founder’s vision of “one family under God,” the Sunhak Peace Prize will encourage all people to dedicate themselves to peace, choosing dialogue and cooperation over conflict and competition.
– Thomas G. Walsh Secretary General, Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation
INDEED, PEACE IS THE HIGHEST AND ULTIMATE VALUE AND DESIRE THAT HAS BEEN SOUGHT CEASELESSLY BY HUMANKIND THROUGHOUT HISTORY. THIS NOBLE IDEAL DEMANDS THE DEDICATION AND SACRIFICE OF MANY RIGHTEOUS AND CAPABLE INDIVIDUALS.
The core values of the Sunhak Peace Prize, which serve as the primary criteria in evalu-ating laureate candidates, are:
• Service to others
• Upholding universal values
• Contributing to the sustain-able development goals
• Overcoming barriers that divide the human family
Core ValuesA Legacy of Peace
The Sunhak Peace Prize was established to honor the lives and legacy of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, both of whom devoted their lives to peace.
In 2015, the Sunhak Peace Prize was awarded to President Anote Tong of Kiribati, for raising awareness about the devastating global impact of climate change, and to Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta of India, for being a leader in developing aquaculture, especially among the rural poor in developing nations.
The next Sunhak Peace Prize will be presented in 2017.
Laureate 2015President Anote Tong
Pres. Tong has devoted a significant amount of his energy into defending the rights of his citizens, and has contributed greatly in building awareness among the international community on the need for protection of human rights for climate refugees. Pres. Tong is establishing a systematic migration policy so that his country’s citizens, who will be forced to leave Kiribati within the next 30 years due to rising sea levels submerging their country, can migrate with their dignity intact. First, he worked diligently to secure funds to buy land for the resettlement, purchasing 24.28 million m² of land in Fiji, and is running the ‘Migration With Dignity’ vocational education program so that they will not be treated as unstable ‘refugees’ but as valuable members of the work-force with competitiveness and marketability.
PRESIDENT ANOTE TONG IMPROVED GLOBAL AWARENESS OF THE SEVERITY OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOUGHT FOR ACTION
BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY FOR ITS SOLUTION.
DR. M. V. GUPTA PIONEERED THE BLUE REVOLUTION AND HAS INVESTED
HIS ENTIRE LIFE TO DEVELOPING AQUACULTURE AS AN ALTERNATIVE
SOLUTION TO THE FUTURE FOOD CRISIS.
Laureate 2015Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta
Dr. Gupta spent his entire life developing environment friendly aquaculture methods/technologies using agriculture wastes and by-products along with innovative implementation practices that benefitted small-scale farmers and addressed issues of poverty, nutritional deficiency, and self-resilience in South and Southeast Asia, and enthusiastically organized and educated the poor spreading his methods of aquaculture. Moreover, he actively taught aquaculture to women with low social status, leading to major improvements in women’s rights and their empowerment. Ignoring threats to his own life and devoting himself to research in war-torn conflict areas, Dr. Gupta’s efforts to develop low-cost methods of aquaculture has created a possible solution that can overcome the food crises as a result of anticipated population explosion and impact of climate change.

"As a member of the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee, I warmly congratulate the prize's inaugural laureates, President Anote Tong of Kiribati and Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta, from India, whose great achievements in these areas surely deserve such recognition, and I hope and trust that the Sunhak Peace Prize itself will grow to become one of the world's most distinguished awards, shining a light of hope throughout the world."
– Boutros Boutros-Ghali 6th Secretary-General of the United Nations
It is of great eternal wisdom the way you graciously connect the concept of Peace, On the one hand to "CLIMATE–PEACE" and reward President Anote Tong, of the Republic of Kiribati; and on the other to "FOOD–PEACE" in rewarding Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta, Pioneer of the Blue Revolution in India.
– Hjörtur Magni Jóhannsson Director and Head Minister of the Reykjavík Free Lutheran Church, Iceland.
