Sarah S. Richardson is John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University. She is jointly appointed in the Department of the History of Science and the Committee on Degrees in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Richardson’s research uses the tools of history, philosophy, and social studies of science to analyze how scientists, in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, understand sex and gender.
Richardson is the author of Sex Itself: The Search for Male and Female in the Human Genome (2013) and is currently completing a second book, The Maternal Imprint, forthcoming from University of Chicago Press. She has published two edited volumes, Revisiting Race in a Genomic Age (2008) and Postgenomics: Perspectives on Biology After the Genome (2015), articles in Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, BioSocieties, The Hastings Report, and Biology and Philosophy, and commentaries in Nature, PNAS, and the Journal of Neuroscience. Her work has also appeared in popular forums such as Slate, CNN.com, and The Boston Globe.

The idea that a woman may leave a biological trace on her gestating offspring has long been a commonplace folk intuition and a matter of scientific intrigue, but the form of that idea – and its social, political, and cultural implications – has changed dramatically over time. From Homer to the Bible, and Aristotle to Descartes, expert and common knowledge held that a pregnant woman’s emotions and experiences could “imprint” on the fetus, leading to features such as birthmarks, deformities, and distinctive personality traits. Beginning with the advent of modern genetics at the turn of the twentieth century, however, biomedical scientists dismissed any notion that a mother – except in cases of extreme deprivation or injury – could alter her offspring’s traits. Consensus asserted that the fetus was walled off from a woman’s body by the placenta and that a child’s fate was set by a combination of its genes and post-birth upbringing. Over the last fifty years, this consensus was dismantled.
Today, research on the intrauterine environment and its effects on the fetus is emerging as a robust program of study in medicine, public health, psychology, evolutionary biology, and genomics. Collectively, these sciences argue that a woman’s experiences, behaviors, and physiology, inflected by her social and environmental context, can have life-altering effects on offspring development. These effects, some researchers claim, represent a biologically important but non-genetic form of inheritance, potentially refracting the mother’s experiences and exposures across generations of descendants. This talk presents a history of the life of the idea, in the twentieth and twenty-first century biosciences, that a pregnant woman’s health, behavior, and milieu can have intergenerational effects on her descendants. Tracing a genealogy of ideas about heredity and maternal-fetal effects, Richardson offers a critical analysis of conceptual and ethical issues provoked by the striking rise of epigenetics and fetal origins science in postgenomic biology today.
