Quant Shortcuts for CAT 2007by Total Gadha - Sunday, 11 November 2007, 04:23 PM

I have written on this theme before also. But before CAT 2007 happens, I would like to remind all the TGitesabout these methods once again. What is a shortcut? By shortcuts, I do not mean a sudden inspiration or amerratic method which can be applied to only one or two problems. By shortcut I mean a set method, apattern which can be repeated again and again. These shortcuts can be learned and applied under pressurealso. The reason to apply these shortcuts is one- getting to answers fast and in an easier way than byactually solving the problems. I have discussed two basic methods here which I predominantly use:1. Examine the options2. Start small

Woh! Now I know why cut-offs are high! Its more about presence of m ind than sheer mechanical aptitude. A friend who got into IIMB lastyear recommended the same thing. Look at the options first and see whether the answer is staring at you even without having to solve it.

Great stuff TG!!

Great!

TG a small request a lthough at inappropriate time, please give us gadhas some gyan on DI too,i mean it is just a thought that comes tomind while attempting a set and spending 10 -15 min on it: Should i continue with this one, should i leave,if its cracked then 5 questions!Simply put when to say good bye to it without messing up the entire section.

You really are a Gem!

Thanks for everything

Hi TG,

Nice useful article.

It would be worth mentioning here a few more technics like,

1. If one is good with drawing, s/he may try drawing scaled diagrams for geometry.. N then choose the closest option. R isky but it he lps!

2. If the question has variables. then substitute with small nos. like 0 or 1. Then do the same with answer options and then match them..

Cheers & ATB fe llas!

Re: Quant Shortcuts for CAT 2007by TG Team - Wednesday, 26 February 2014, 04:06 PM

Hi Usman

I don't think that it can be explained more beautifully as it has been done over there above.

See, purpose of this post is not to solve the question actually rather playing with the options.

In first question, it asks about the ratio of area of square after the punch to before the punch. Let it be x = (area ofsquare remaining after punch)/(area of square).

We know that area of the square = 2 = 4, so area of square remaining after punch = 4x.

So area of square punched = 4 - 4x.

Now second question asks about the area of the round punch falling outside of square, let it be y.

It's obvious that if we add the two areas i.e. (4 - 4x) and y, we'll get the area of complete circle which is simply .

Now you final job is only to check the options given as done beautifully in the artic le above.

I hope it is c lear now.
