She is a trusteeof the Feline Advisory Bureau, a member ofthe ISFM expert panel, and a regular speakerat continuing education meetings.

Day one - SurgeryThe surgical day will present a variety of soft tissue surgicalproblems with a particular emphasis on the cat.

Ear disease in the cat has some distinct features. Inparticular, cats are much more commonly affected withprimary middle ear disease than dogs and ear canalneoplasia is more common in cats than dogs. This sessionwill focus on middle ear disease, considering the underlyingpathology, investigation/diagnosis and management, especially ventral bulla osteotomy.

Diaphragmatic rupture is a common result of vehiculartrauma in the cat. This session will consider diagnosis, patient stabilisation and surgical management. This is acommonly encountered condition in first opinion practice, and one with which all feline practitioners should becomfortable.

Portosystemic shunts are less common in cats than dogs butoffer some interesting diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The speaker will concentrate on surgical diagnosis andtherapy.

Urethral obstruction in the cat presents some uniquechallenges. Last year the speaker considered the overallapproach but this year the focus will be on the key surgicaltechniques of perineal and prepubic urethrostomy.

Feline gastrointestinal surgery is based on the sameprinciples as other species but biliary obstruction isrelatively common and this will be considered in somedetail, together with feline intestinal obstruction andmegacolon.

This lively two-day event hosted by Martha Cannon (RCVS Specialist FelineMedicine) and Alasdair Hotston-Moore (Head of Referral Surgery, BathVeterinary Group) will bring you up to date with some of the key medical andsurgical areas of Feline Practice. There will be plenty of time for questions, and a course dinner on the Saturday night will give delegates an opportunityto mix with peers and some of the speakers in a relaxed environment.

Course fees£595.00 plus VAT (£714.00 in total) This includes two full days of CPD (12 hours), lunch on both days, all refreshments, course notes and overnight accommodation and a course dinner on the Saturday night.

Key learning objectivesBy the end of the course, delegates should understand;Day one – Surgery• Management of feline middle ear disease (polyps and

otitis media)• Effective treatment of diaphragmatic rupture in the cat• How to perform feline urethrostomy• Surgical approach to feline portosystemic shuntsDay two - Medicine • How to recognise the signs and know how to approach the

treatment of:• Feline Herpesvirus Keratitis and Corneal Ulcers• FCV pneumonia and Virulent Systemic Calicivirus• Dermatological manifestations of the Flu Viruses• The benefits of regular vaccination• Current independent guidelines on:• Core vaccines and non-core vaccines• Vaccination frequency and duration of immunity• Vaccination sites• IRIS Staging system and its application to clinical cases• The importance of identifying and treating the common

complications of chronic kidney disease with particularreference to;

• Hyperphosphataemia• Proteinuria• Hypertension• The benefits and limitations of ACE inhibitors in the

management of chronic kidney disease• When to use additional diagnostic tests and how to

interpret total T4, free T4 and TSH levels in hyperthyroidand euthyroid cats

• Current recommendations on the approach to managinghyperthyroidism when there is also concurrent chronickidney disease

• The risks and benefits of traditional anti-thyroidmedications as well as the newly available treatmentoptions;

• Dietary management• Transdermal methimazole ointment• Know how to recognise the signs of osteoarthritis in cats• The wide range of treatments available for the

management of arthritis in cats• Understand the risks and benefits of long term NSAID

use in cats, including their use in cats with chronickidneys disease

• How old is old? When is a cat a “senior” cat?• Blood pressure, urinalysis, blood tests – what should we

include, and what do we learn from the results?• How to price this to encourage owners to take it up

Day two - Medicine This medical day will cover a variety of areas, including,

Feline Calicivirus and Feline Herpesvirus – Beyond “cat flu”.

FCV and FHV are common viruses in all domestic catpopulations. We know them as the “Cat Flu Viruses”, but herewe take a new look at these familiar adversaries; reviewingthe wider range of problems they can cause, and looking atnew developments in their treatment:

Feline Vaccination – Controversies and Current Thinking:

• How often should we vaccinate and with what?

• Injection Site Sarcoma: How worried should we be? Whatcan we do to minimise the risk?

• Review of current independent Guidelines on FelineVaccination with a view to developing effective andpractical vaccine protocols for day to day practice

Chronic Renal Failure: A common problem in older cats thattends to be progressive and ultimately fatal. We look at thesignificant benefits that arise from early diagnosis andeffective management of some of the common complications, using practical tests and widely available treatments.

Hyperthyroidism is another common problem of the oldercat that can be highly rewarding to treat. However in somecases diagnosis and treatment are not straightforwardespecially in cats with concurrent chronic kidney disease. Wereview the approach to diagnosis when total T4 is notenough, and look at new developments in treatment options

The majority of elderly cats suffer from osteoarthritis – but itremains an under-recognised and under-treated problem;how can we help owners to recognise the signs and what arethe effective treatment options?

Senior Wellness Clinics: Offering owners rational andaffordable “wellness screening” should be an invaluable toolin maintaining their elderly cat’s health and welfare, butthere can be practical difficulties in implementing this. Wewill review current thinking on when to offer wellnessscreening, the tests that could be included, and an assessmentof their value to the cat.

He is aDiplomate of the European and AmericanColleges of Veterinary Surgery.

Day one - MedicalThe day will be spent discussing a few topics that occur commonlyon everyday practice and that often are challenging to deal with. The following topics will be discussed:

Chronic coughing: logical approach to the investigationWe will discuss an anatomical approach to the differentialdiagnoses and then a logical investigation of the problem usingtools such as X rays, bronchoscopy and, on occasions, CT scan.

Diabetes mellitus; treating the unstable patientThe goals and aims of treating diabetes mellitus are different indogs compared to humans. Diabetic dogs can be unstable due to amyriad of reasons and we will discuss how to identify insulinresistance, potential causes for insulin resistance and strategies totry to improve the situation.

Chronic renal disease: staging and managementWhy it is important to stage a patient and what drugs to use totreat the most common complications.

The IRIS staging system will be used to help identify mostcommonly encountered problems, the different stages of renaldisease and their prevention/treatment.

Chronic diarrhoea: investigation and treatment. Are intestinalbiopsies always necessary? We are often presented with patients with chronic diarrhoea. Thedifferential diagnoses will be discussed alongside the pertinentdiagnostic tests such as the potential need of obtaining intestinalbiopsies. At the end of the session we will then focus on thediagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Liver disease: decision making for investigation of hepatic diseaseIn the investigation of liver disease it is very important to have inmind a list of the most common differential diagnoses for eachsituation as this can seriously impact on the technique used toobtain liver tissue.

We will discuss the use of clinical signs, blood tests andultrasound to establish a list of the most likely differentialdiagnosis for each condition. Afterwards, we will then try to selectwhich method of obtaining liver biopsies is best for each situation.

Acute pancreatitis: medical treatmentAcute pancreatitis can be a life threatening disease. We willdiscuss the medical treatment of pancreatitis and potentialsituations when surgery might be indicated. The use of fluidtherapy, anti-emetics, gastroprotectants and analgesia , amongstothers, will be discussed.

Old thoughts and new ideas.

chronic coughing.• What conditions are commonly associated with

poor diabetic control and what is realistic toachieve.

• The IRIS staging for chronic kidney disease and itsimportance on treatment

• Which tests are indicated when investigatingchronic diarrhoea and logically think about trialtreatments for cases where biopsies are notpossible.

• How to logically decide which is the mostappropriate form of obtaining hepatic samples bytaking into account the most likely differentials

• The logical approach to the treatment of acutepancreatitis

Day two - Surgical• When surgery is indicated while managing or

working up a dog with cough or other respiratoryclinical signs

• What surgical options are available whenthoracocentsis is insufficient to manage pleuraleffusions

• How to make the most out of an exploratorylaparotomy when biopsies are needed : what tobiopsy and what to NOT biopsy, nature and size ofthe samples, how to store them etc…

• When feeding tubes other than O-tubes are needed• When surgery is indicated while managing or

working up a dog with diarrhoea, liver orpancreatic issues

Day two - Surgical The day will come in continuation of the medicine day , andwill explore the surgical aspects of the conditions that havebeen described during the medicine day. This will include :

• Surgery of the lower and upper airways : the old and new

• Surgical approach to pleural effusions: when tapping thechest is not enough

• Gastric, intestinal, liver and pancreatic surgery: thebiopsies and beyond

• Feeding tubes for dogs : where do they need to be placed? This part of the course is aimed at showing how the surgeonand internist can work together on the work-up andtreatment of some of the common but potentially challengingcases seen in practice.

Who should attendVets in general small animal practice with a combined interest ininternal medicine and surgery.

Vomiting and diarrhoea – medical or surgical 4th September 2013

Rabbit update30th October 2013

Approach to the coughing dogTrue coughing is secondary to stimulation of the cough receptors. Understanding their location and what cantrigger them is an essential step for clinicians to consider coughing a rewarding problem to be faced with. This, however, doesn’t mean that the clinician will easily be able to treat/control it in all patients… In this course, wewill give emphasis to the work-up of the coughing patient in a logical and systematic manner to help clinicians toachieve a diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan.

Common house and garden poisoningsThis course will briefly review the generic approach to all intoxicated dogs and cats and will highlight newertherapeutic options. An overview will then be given of common household and garden poisons includingchocolate toxicity, ingestion grapes/raisins, drug intoxciations (paracetamol, ibuprofen, cannabis), permethrintoxicity, Slug bait toxicity, oil, tar or paint and ethylene glycol ingestion. Typical clinical signs, diagnostic tests(where appropriate) and specific treatment will be discussed.

Vomiting and diarrhoea – medical or surgical This webinar will discuss diagnostic investigation of the vomiting +/- patient, including imaging and endoscopy. We will look at how to achieve good surgical gastrointestinal biopsies and the pros and cons of surgical vsendoscopic biopsies. We will explore surgical options for patients with obstructive disease and look briefly atmedical control of vomiting or diarrhoea.

Rabbit update The course will cover updates on recent rabbit medicine and surgery issues, including E. cuniculi, GI tract disease, respiratory tract disease and infectious diseases. We will cover recent advances in anaesthesia and surgery, decision making in gastrointestinal surgery, and medical and surgical management of ear disease.
