Short Circuit Selective Coordination for Low Voltage CircuitBreakersRetain for future use.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this data bulletin is to present short circuit selectivecoordination data for various combinations of Square D low voltage circuitbreakers. The scope of this data bulletin encompasses only breaker-to-breakershort circuit selective coordination. Coordination between circuit breakers inthe overload region of their time-current curves, coordination with fuses andthe protection of motors, transformers and other devices, as well ascoordinated ground fault protection, is not dicussed. Conventional selectivecoordination studies using time-current curves are still required to addressthese issues. See the REFERENCE section, on page 5 , for other databulletins on this subject.

This data bulletin is a companion to Enhancing Short Circuit SelectiveCoordination with Low Voltage Circuit Breakers , document number0100DB0403.

    SELECTIVE COORDINATIONDATA

System designers are accustomed to determining the level of short circuitselective coordination between combinations of low voltage circuit breakersusing trip curves. But using trip curves alone sometimes leads to thedetermination of a selective coordination level that is lower than can actuallybe achieved.

How Trip Curves Are Developed Circuit breaker trip curves are typically developed by conducting interruptiontests at various levels of overload and short circuit current. The timenecessary for the circuit breaker to completely interrupt the current flow isthen measured. In the instantaneous region of the trip curve, it is oftenassumed that the fault clearing time is constant, hence the curve is usually astraight line in that region.

Current Limiting Circuit Breakers Many modern circuit breakers are designed with blow-open contacts and /or other features to quickly clear high fault currents, resulting in clearingtimes that decrease as the current increases, unlike what the conservativelydrawn trip curves may indicate. Even circuit breakers not UL listed orCSA certified as current limiting may exhibit current limiting characteristics.

    Dynamic Characteristics of CircuitBreakers

All circuit breakers, when they begin to open, serve to limit the prospectiveflow of current, even if they are not listed or certified as current limiting. Thisis an important factor to consider when two circuit breakers are connected in

electronic trip circuit breakers that have an OFF position on theinstantaneous switch are also equipped with a short time pick-up and delayfunction, and may also be equipped with an instantaneous selectiveoverride function if necessary for the proper functioning of the circuitbreaker. The adjustment of trip settings does not affect any series rating that may be

    employed as UL

    and CSA

require series ratings tests to be conductedwith the instantaneous trip adjustment set to its highest position.

HOW TO USE THE TABLES In order to use the data presented here, some basic information is needed.

System One-line Diagram A one-line diagram of the system to be studied is absolutely necessary inorder to determine the level of system coordination.

System Voltage While the system voltage, in and of itself, has no impact on selectivecoordination, it does impact circuit breaker selection, which in turn impactscoordination; thus the system voltage needs to be known.

Circuit Ampacity The instantaneous trip characteristics of a circuit breaker may be a function

of the frame or current sensor rating rather than the current rating of thecircuit breaker. However, the current rating required to meet the ampacity ofthe circuit drives the circuit breaker selection, thus it needs to be known.(See NEC Articles 210, 215, 220, 225 and 230.)

Available Short Circuit Current The available short circuit current at each point in the system should bedetermined in order to select circuit breakers with the proper interruptingrating and in turn to determine the level of selective coordination.

    Determining Levels of SelectiveCoordination

Based on this information, determine the level of selective coordinationbetween pairs of circuit breakers in the system by finding them in the tablespresented in APPENDIX A on page 6 , APPENDIX B on page 38 andAPPENDIX C on page 41 . The intersection of the upstream anddownstream circuit breakers in the tables lists the level of selectivecoordination between that pair of circuit breakers.

Example Let's consider a 480Y / 277 Vac system with 35 kA available short circuitcurrent. Assume that the system consists of an NF 250 A main lugs lightingpanelboard with single pole EG 35 kAIR rated circuit breakers fed from aJGA36250 circuit breaker with a 35 kA interrupting rating located in anI-Line power panelboard. Determine the level of selective coordinationbetween the upstream JGA circuit breaker and downstream EG circuitbreakers by following these steps.

    1. Find the 480 Vac table listing EG downstream circuit breakers inAPPENDIX A , Table 6: on page 20 .

    2. Find the column for the EG downstream circuit breaker to be studied.3. Go down the column until the row listing the 250 A JG upstream circuit

breaker is found.4. Read the selective coordination level at the intersection of the column

and row, namely 2.4 kA. This means that the JG upstream circuitbreaker is selectively coordinated with downstream EG circuit breakersup to 2,400 amps.

    OPTIMIZING THE SELECTIVECOORDINATION LEVEL

The selective coordination of a circuit breaker based low voltage system canbe optimized using the techniques presented in the Enhancing ShortCircuit Selective Coordination with Low Voltage Circuit Breakers data

bulletin and the data presented in APPENDIX A on page 6 , andAPPENDIX C on page 41 . The following is a brief summary of thetechniques more fully presented in the Enhancing Short Circuit SelectiveCoordination with Low Voltage Circuit Breakers data bulletin.

Conduct A Short Circuit Study Conducting a short circuit study may reveal that lower interrupting rated

downstream circuit breakers can be selected, possibly resulting in higherwithstand ratings.

Increase Frame Size By increasing the frame size of the upstream circuit breaker, it may bepossible to increase the selective coordination at that level in the system.

Change Circuit Breaker Type By changing the upstream circuit breaker from a molded case to aninsulated case circuit breaker, it may be possible to increase the selectivecoordination at that level in the system.

Using the Tables If the level of selective coordination between the two circuit breakers initiallyselected is not sufficient for the application, the tables may be used to findan alternate upstream circuit breaker selection that will yield a higher levelof selective coordination. This may involve a larger frame size or different

type of circuit breaker, as mentioned above. This may be done by goingdown the tables to find possible upstream breakers that may deliver ahigher level of selective coordination.

Example Using the same example previously stated under Determining Levels ofSelective Coordination , determine if a higher level of selectivecoordination can be achieved by following these steps:

    1. Move down the column for the EG downstream circuit breaker to bestudied, looking for upstream breakers that will yield a higher level ofselective coordination.

    2. When the desired level of selective coordination is found, read acrossthe row to find the upstream breaker that will yield this level. In this case,a PG circuit breaker will yield a level of selective coordination of 35,000

amps. This means that the upstream PG circuit breaker is fully selectivewith downstream EG circuit breakers.

CONCLUSION The actual level of selective coordination between pairs of Square D lowvoltage circuit breakers needs to be considered when designing aselectively coordinated low voltage electrical system. This may be done byfinding the pair of circuit breakers in the tables presented in this data bulletinand reading the actual level of selective coordination. If the level of selective coordination is not sufficient for the application, analternate upstream circuit breaker yielding a higher level of selectivecoordination may be found by reading down the table. The alternate may bean electronic trip circuit breaker whose instantaneous trip function can beturned OFF, a larger frame size circuit breaker or a different type of circuit

breaker.A short circuit study to determine the level of short circuit current available atvarious points in the system may allow the selection of circuit breakers witha lower interrupting rating and a higher instantaneous trip level. The data bulletin Enhancing Short Circuit Selective Coordination withLow Voltage Circuit Breakers , document number 0100DB0403, should beconsulted for a further explanation of optimizing techniques for enhancingthe level of short circuit selective coordination.

Levels of Short Circuit SelectiveCoordination for UL 489 StandardCircuit Breakers

The data in the following tables for UL 489 Listed molded and insulatedcase circuit breakers also applies to CSA C22.2 #5-02 and ANCE NMXJ-266 Certified circuit breakers. All data is at 60 Hz. The data does not applyto circuit breakers that are Certified to IEC 60947-2 only or at frequenciesother than 60 Hz.Fully rated and series rated pairs of circuit breakers where there is areasonable expectation of selective coordination are shown. Pairings of thesame frame size or where the upstream circuit breaker might be a currentlimiting circuit breaker are not shown as such pairings would not beexpected to selectively coordinate.Gray shaded cells in the tables indicate series rated combinations. It shouldbe noted that series ratings vary by equipment type, thus publishedinformation regarding the specific type of Square D equipment beingstudied should be consulted for the actual series ratings available in thatequipment.Based on laboratory testing, Square D certifies the following levels ofselective coordination based upon the construction of the specific circuitbreakers referenced as of the date of publication of this document.
