Shahji# his father by deceitful means and had
armies sent a"ainst Shivaji and his elder brother Sambaji. )o
suppress Shivaji0s control on the Bijapur%in"dom# 4f8al $han !as
sent to destroy him. Ho!ever# !ith his cunnin" tric%s# Shivaji
successfully stabbed 4f8al $han. ventually Bijapur0s armies
!ere routed in the famous battle of ratap"arh in 1*79 and
Shivajiturned into a hero of the Marathas. 2o!# under the confident
leadership of Shivaji# the Marthas successfully pushed bac%
the Mu"hals and the sultanate %in"doms from his homeland.
Shivaji also fou"ht !ith the mu"hals# he attac%ed the army !hich
!as led by Shaista $han under the mu"halemperror: 4uran"a8eb.
Ho!ever# Shivaji lost many men a"ainst a !ell trained and
disciplined Mu"halarmy. Shivaji felt the need of finance to
maintain an army and decided to loot the Mu"hal city of Surat.
)heMu"hal emperor then sent Jai Sin"h to defeat Shivaji. 4fter a
fe! s%irmishes# he thou"ht it !as !ise toaccept the emperor0s
soverei"nty. But then he !as soon house arrested in 4"ra. 6ith his
intelli"ence# Shivajisuccessfully escaped from 4"ra and hid in his
homeland and %ept a lo! profile for some time. But then a"ainhe
"radually rebuilt his empire and !ithin si; months he recovered
much of his lost "round.
Shivaji e;tended his empire further to!ards south to )amil 2adu
and $arnata%a. 'n order to re"ain one of
his forts# $ondana# he appointed his most trusted "eneral )anaji
Malusare. )he battle that follo!ed bet!eenthe Marathas and the
Mu"hals came to be %no!n as the Maratha !ar of 'ndependence !here
the Marathas !ere successful in re"ainin" the control of the
fort.
