SITUATIONLocated towards the southern end of the picturesque Meon Valley, Shedfield enjoys an attractive setting. Surrounded by countryside but, within easy reach of Winchester, Southampton, Chichester and
Portsmouth, the village is highly sought after.
In years gone by, proximity to Portsmouth Dockyards made this a popular location for senior naval officers and the link continues. In the present day, Shedfield’s thriving community is served by two village
pubs, New Place Hotel (a 1906 Lutyens masterpiece), The Marriot Hotel and Golf Course, an independent pre-school, an active church and a cricket team.
A private footbridge over a small stream connects the grounds of Shirral House to Shedfield Common, an ancient and protected haven for wildlife.
SHIRRAL HOUSEThe origins of this delightful property are believed to date back to
the 1730s, as witnessed by the fine bread oven, preserved in what
is now the sitting room. Enlarged in Victorian, Edwardian and
more recent times, Shirral House is a substantial and attractive
family home with 5,300 sq ft of living accommodation in the main
house and a further 2,000 sq ft of garages, barn, workshop and
outbuildings.
Retaining character features from every era of its evolution, it
offers a versatile layout including six bedrooms and an integral
annex.
In a major program of works between 1984 and 1985, the house
was substantially re-built. This included the construction of a
new roof along with complete re-wiring, plumbing and plastering
throughout. All floors were lifted and where necessary, replaced.
In the intervening years the house has been extended and in
2014 two new gas boilers were installed and the heating and hot
water systems upgraded to include solar power, augmented in
2015 by a 6.25 kwh photo voltaic system . Further heating and
hot water is supplied by a wood burning stove fitted with a back
boiler.
Shirral House in about three acres of grounds, approached via
a five bar gate and gravel drive. At the front of the house there
is plenty of parking space and across a lawn, to the east of the
house, there is an excellent hard tennis court.
A more formal garden leads down to a wooded area, with
Victorian brick lined dew pond and stream, beyond which lies
Shedfield Common.
An orchard with fruit cage leads onto a kitchen garden and a
sheltered south facing area which lies beyond the outdoor heated
swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool there is a shower, sauna
and a poolside entertainment area. The water is heated via a
highly efficient air source heat pump. Mounted on the roof of the
poolside buildings, an array of photo voltaic panels, linked to the
national grid, provides useful feed-in tariff income.
Beside the house and linked by a covered walk way, there
is a solidly constructed double garage with light and power
connected. Extending from the rear of this building lies a further
garage, a barn with workshop, wood store, summer house and
greenhouse.
Visitors to Shirral House are met with an elegant reception hall with fireplace and staircase to the first floor. Leading on from here there is a spacious dining room with Adam style fireplace and a drawing
room with double aspect and a feature open fireplace. This room opens onto a large conservatory which overlooks the garden and tennis court. The cosy sitting room has an inglenook fireplace with wood
burning stove and an original bread oven. This leads through to the family room and kitchen which has a double gas fired Aga, a walk in larder, a wealth of fitted cupboards and a central island. This in turn
opens onto the lantern roofed breakfast and family room.
On the first floor the master bedroom has double aspect windows overlooking the extensive gardens, a dressing room with built in wardrobes and an en suite bathroom. There are five further bedrooms
and two bathroom/shower rooms.
