Between October 95 and I"eb 96, the nomadic peoples of NW Siclruan experierrccd theworst snow storms in l iv ing memory result ing in hardship, sul ' fer ing and death.tr ' r iends of China (X'OC) and Care and Share Foundat ion (CSI), were alcrtcd i rr late.Janand up to RM8750,00 was promised fronr l ' r iends in l1 countr ics.
FOC rvas able to purchase l \ {cdicincs, food, & clothing ancl distr ibutc thcm in Slr iqucounty in March 96- The *vorst of the disa^ster was near'ly ovcr by the liDre the ternrarr ived, al though many nomads had lost al l their l ivestock, which reprcscnts theirfuture livelihood.
The government inst i tuted a plan to purchase new stock for famil ies rvho had lost lnostof their Yak. They expectto be able to secure a ma.ior share from central or provincialsources but value help from thc internat ional community. They invi ted FOC to return inJune to buy Yak and TB merl ic ine.
Between 19th June and 6th July a smal l I |OC team was ablc to vis i t Shiqu. TII rnedicincwas taken from Chengdu ancl 794 Yak were purchased and distr ibuted to poor nomadsin three "distr icts".
The Shiqu government value FOC's involvernent in their county and have invi ted us toreturn to Shiqu in Autrrmn 96 and assist with :- l ivestocl<, l 'cncing, mccl ic inc rrnd hay.
Shiqu county l ras also requested longer , term development assistance acros.s a range ofdiscipl ines and would rvelcome a feasibi l i ty study.
