SS hriners from Ontario to Florida and Nova Scotia toCalifornia will descend on the “City of Saints”, Montreal. The Golden Horseshoe will be well represented with

Nobles and their Ladies from our threeClubs all-arriving by motor coach, along with others from Hamilton andOakville.

Got a fundraising idea to offset ourcosts? Bend the ear of your Presidentor 2nd V-P who’s helping out the ways

and means chair and get your idea in motion, this could pan outto be a freebie.

We are all are looking forward to the opening ceremonies inAugust and the fun to be had in the city. Talk it up in your Cluband get on board for the invasion to Mount Royal, old Montreal“je t’aime”!

A few of us visited Ismailia Shrine to attend their meat drawfundraiser in early March. The best I could do with over 60chances to win was apackage of bologna;it was thick slicedthough. The bigwinner in the groupwas our DD, I guess afair trade for himdriving us partiersthere. I had leftoverribs and sauerkrautfor lunch before venturing over the river for the evening event.

The brilliant snack organizer in charge of late supper inBuffalo had the ultimate in sandwich makings; pumpernickel ryebread with liverwurst, onions and limburger cheese topped witha dab of hot mustard; yummy. My other meat gamblersthreatened me with having to ride on the rear bumper if Ipassed any wind on the ride home. Remember, that old adage;no one is listening until you pass wind? Well, by exercising lotsof muscle control I was able to hold off the tunes and retain myinside ride.

What most impressed me were the Potentates, current andpast and all the Divan members working the floor selling tickets,in the kitchen making sandwiches, and pouring beer for the 400plus crowd and their Shrine members.

At the end of the night they were still there; tearing downand setting up the ballroom for an incoming toy show they hadthe next day.

Hopefully I don’t permanently cripple myself on our springgolf trip down south before our foursome can defend the titlewon at last year’s ceremonial golf tourney. The Trillium Woodcourse looks pretty tight on the website so I’m programming allmy golf balls with GPS directions to the flag. What triggers that

golf urge in February and March? Is it the 6-foot snow banks athome or all those amazing golf shots we see on TV. I know forme it’s because all of us amateurs think we have at least one ofthose shots hiding, sometimes forever, in the bag just waiting toget out. I think it was Lee Trevino who said, “golf is a gameinvented by the same people who think music comes out of abagpipe”. Where did he hear our pipers?

Belleville has been hard at work prepping for our arrival tocelebrate Ill. Sir Jim’s “Driving for our Kids” year as our 2015fearless leader. He should be ready for some relaxation by Juneafter he gets the doors finally open to our new headquarters.

The Maid is already making strange sounds in her winterberth and tugging at her moorings in anticipation for the sail upto the “Friendly City”. Is there a chance those strange soundscame from a delivery of a Mini Maid? The new parade unit isplanned to run circles around MOM sometime soon, after a lotof innovative work. It will replace the 1941 clown truck, ourfunny-faced Nobles are hoping another Shrine Unit will give thetruck and its haulingtrailer a new life, give usa call.

How are your fishingskills? Attend your localsportsman show andlearn how to catch a few.Much better than asportsman show attendyour Shrine Club. Learnof our need formembership then set along nightline at yourBlue Lodge meeting. Here is where all thosebig ones hang out, setthe hook with ourmessage of hope for the children and reel a few into thefraternity. This is definitely the fun side of Masonry and I canpersonally attest to that with all the fun I have. It may be toolate for a catch this year but the Spring Ceremonial is coming toour town and we need the place filled to capacity, Niagara’s theScene in 2016.

Driving for our Kids

Hello Nobles, by the time you receive this message after a hard long cold winter, the snowshould be all gone and warm weather is on its way. The birds should be singing and the flowers trying to get out into the open.

The Divan will be busy visiting the Clubs and Units for BBQs, golf tournaments, picnics, and hoping tosee other Nobles and Master Masons having fellowship and fun together.

The parade season will already be started. Now this is the time when you can go out and show thepeople what the Shriners do for our children by having fun.

If you want any of the Divan to come to your functions please let us know, as we get pretty busy atthis time of the year.

As the Divan has been traveling throughout the district, we have found different Shrine Clubs havingMaster Mason nights. I think that this is a great way to get new members. If you want new members inyour Club you should try to have one of these events.

I would like to thank all the Nobles that came out to the Membership Seminar, also to the Noblesthat spoke on their topics and helped in different ways. Remember Nobles, we need new members, theMembership Chairman cannot do it by himself, he needs all of our help. I would like to see 105 newmembers at the Spring Ceremonial in Belleville in June. Nobles, please do not disappoint me.

I would like to thank Noble Al Berry and Lady Jackie and their helpers for doing a great job at thePotentate’s Ball. Lady Barb and I will remember that night forever. Also for all the Nobles and theirLadies for coming out to support such a great event.

This is just a reminder of the Spring Ceremonial in Bellville on June 12th and 13th. Be sure to haveyour rooms booked.

Lady Barb would like to thank all the Ladies who bought tickets on her draw to be held in Belleville inJune. If you have not got one yet, see Lady Barb and she will be glad to sell you one. The benefit will go

to the Shriners Hospital for Children – Canada in Montreal for the Children’sWish List.

If you have not booked your rooms for the Imperial Session in Houston Texasyet, you should do that now. All the information you need is in the Papyrus.

The opening of the new Canadian Shriners Hospital for Children is onschedule for August 20, 2015, in Montreal.

RECORDER’SMESSAGE

Isn’t it great to be a Shriner . . .it’s Feztastic!

Pulling Together Nobles, this is a very exciting year to be a Shriner. I ampleased to report that the construction of our newhospital is on schedule, and on budget. Painting is

complete on the lower floors, flooring is installed, and millworkhas started. Partitions are built and drywall is being installed onthe upper floors. The first of the laboratory furniture and medicalequipment has been delivered, and is in storage. Theconstruction of our hospital is approximately 75% complete andwell on schedule for the opening this fall.

The dedication ceremony for our new Shrine Hospital isscheduled for August 20th. All Nobles are invited to attend. Thiswill be a very busy day with many dignitaries and formalceremony. Anyone attending will get an abbreviated tour of thefacility afterward. We are expecting all of the Imperial Divan, the Divans and Potentates from the 17 Temples that support thishospital, other Potentates and representatives, members of theGrand Lodge of Quebec, Doctors and management from ourhospital, dignitaries from the Quebec government, and manyNobles from across Canada, and the northeastern US.

The next event will be an Open House of the new hospitalon the weekend of September 19th and 20th. This open house isfor Shriners, Masons, Donors, and the general public. Visits tothe hospital on the open house weekend will be more extensivethan in August or after the hospital opens.

Once the hospital is open for business, there will be areasthat will be off limits (surgical areas, etc.), as with our existingfacility.

The move to the new building is scheduled to complete byOctober 1st. It is expected that the last patient visits to our oldhospital will be in September, and all portions of the hospitalwill be open for business on October 1st.

There will be no tours of the new hospital (other than theabove noted events) until November. We need to give the staff achance to get organized and comfortable with their new home, before we add visitors to the mix. Our Public Relations staffwould be pleased to help with any organized event or visit afterthat.

The hospital fundraising campaign, “Exceptional Care forExceptional Kids”, is going well. Campaign organizers haveachieved $120 million or 92% of the $130 million dollar goal. Afantastic success rate. Rameses Shriners have donated/pledged$984,951 as of January 31st of this year, over 75% of ourcommitment. Keep those donations coming!

It’s that time in our Shrine year that we are surrounded byall kinds of signs of new life; flowers, trees budding. It is time for us Shriners to “Spring into Life” as we prepare for

the upcoming functions of our Shrine. As Shrine-Masons we will look back on 2015 as an amazing

year with exciting challenges and events; moving to our newhome at 124 Queen’s Plate Drive, Spring Ceremonial inBelleville, June 11th - 13th, Imperial Session in Houston Texas,July 5th - 9th and the largest and newest Shriners Hospital forChildren in Montreal Canada - truly amazing. Openingceremony will be August 20th, 2015.

Shrine Masons are builders. In fact a famous Mason JosephFort Newton wrote a book called “The Builder”. Newtonclaimed that the world had benefited greatly because ofMasonic ideals had helped us build the World’s GreatestFraternity of Brotherly love, relief and truth, as well built theWorld’s Greatest Philanthropy “Shriners Hospitals for Children”.

As Shrine Masons we have learned through all thechallenges, if we build bridges, bridges connect, walls divide, bridges enhance communication, and walls obstructcommunication, bridges promote friendship, walls causeisolation. The Webster Dictionary defines a bridge as anystructure - rising to afford convenient passage over rivers, railroads, ravines or any other obstacle.

Bottom line of the Shrine - we can only be successfulbuilding bridges if we pull together in our vision, aims andpurposes of our members and Shriners Hospital for Children bypulling together to achieve greatness.

Rev. Marshal Jess once told me the story of the people ofRichmond Virginia who commissioned a statue to be made oftheir famous General Robert E. Lee riding on his horse“Traveler”.

Upon arrival of the statue to its site would have been to loadit on wagons and take it to a designated location, but someonesaid let’s pull the statue ourselves. When all was set and themoving day arranged, the streets were decorated with flags andthe bands played, everyone came out to join in pulling the rope.“They must have been Shriners”, the rich, the poor, the commonfolk and the leading citizens.

When the journey ended, someone took out a knife and cutoff a piece of rope for a memento of the day.

The idea spread and many people did the same thing. Yearslater pieces of rope would show up and people would say, “Ihad hold of this rope!” Did you?

This Shrine vision or journey involves challenges andresponsibilities that are far too great for one person or even a

few but to achieve greatness as Shriner Masons we can all “pulltogether” remembering that someday people will say “Didyou!” “Let’s pull together to keep the red fez smiling”.

Although our travels this past winter have been in thebitter weather conditions, we were invariably greeted with a warm welcome from all the Nobles and Ladies

we met from the different Clubs and we thank you for that.Thankfully springtime travel has been more pleasant

We are now in a new era as we are now firmly entrenched inour new building. It has taken a little longer than we expected, but as most of you will be aware, whenever you take on aproject of this size there will always be a few hiccups along theway, and this project was no exception. It was important thatwe resolved these issues in the correct manner and this Ibelieve we achieved. Taking shortcuts and rushing inconstruction is never a long-term solution.

Many of you have made a visit already and I hope thatsometime in the near future you all will be able to visit the newTemple and take part in the activities we have planned.

Many of you attended the Executive Seminar and thePotentate’s Ball and we thank you for your attendance andsupport. Any comments and/or suggestions as to the building, its operation, and possible activities will be greatly received.

It will be a year of grand openings with our openingceremonies for the Temple as yet not finalized, but we hope tohave an event which will involve everybody. Again, ideas and

suggestions are always welcome. Remember, it is “YOUR”Temple so please come and get involved.

August sees the opening of the Canadian Hospital inMontreal. This promises to be a gala event and I know many ofyou have already made your hotel arrangements for this greatand memorable event.

All in all we have a very exciting year to look forward towith the Imperial Sessions being held in the great city ofHouston, TX.

Our Spring Ceremonial is in the great city of Belleville. Iknow the Nobility and Ladies of Belleville have worked veryhard to make this Ceremonial a great event.

Add in all the golf tournaments and other summer eventssuch as parades and barbeques etc.

Remember the Shrine was created for fun! Be sure to get outand have some fun after our long winter.

Lady Jackie and I wish you a safe and happy summer andlook forward to our visits.

Nobles, a new era for Rameses Shriners has begun. Bythe time you read this message, Rameses will besettled into our brand new home on Queen’s Plate

Drive. No doubt there are those who will be second-guessingwhy the move. The fact is it is done and I hope all will be proudof the New Headquarters. I feel it is a building we can start tohold some great events in. Is it as big as Keele Street? Of coursenot, but it does have a bar and enough room for most of our

functions. I know we have an excellent location, which is easilyaccessible from any direction.

As far as the finances go, Rameses Shriners overall showed anet income of $91,412, combining general, investment andtransportation funds.

New auditors were retained to do the audit this past year, which resulted in a savings of approximately 14%. They foundthe books and records to be in excellent shape, mainly due toVeronica our accounting lady. It is my opinion that RamesesShriners is in excellent shape financially.

One last reminder, if we all do our best to promotemembership, we can start to increase our membership. I lookforward to seeing you at our new home sometime soon.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed a Happy Easter andPassover. We are looking forward to a busy summer and good weather.

It is nice to be in our new Headquarters and I hope we willenjoy our new building. We will miss our old Temple, especiallythose of us who were Shriners when we bought it many yearsago. We have had a lot of fun and good times and now it istime to move forward.

Our Spring Ceremonial is once again in Belleville and I knowthey will do a great job as always. We will be having our annualDrum Head Service at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 14th at the BellevilleCenotaph on Station Street. The service will be followed bybreakfast at the Belleville Shrine Club. I invite all Nobles andtheir families to join us for our Service.

Many of us spend our lives running from things - obligations, relationships, even God. There are many things we can outrunbut, no matter how fast you are, you can never outrun God.Today, why not turn and run towards Him instead of away fromHim.

To those who are sick and in distress, we pray for yourrecovery and peace.

Please give me a call if I can be of any assistance.

Nobles, your Divan has been working hard on yourbehalf. By now we have completed the seminars. Itwas our intention to remind and educate new

members on the procedures and protocols of the Shrine. You may have heard that 10-letter word that sparks fear in

some Nobles. That scary word is “membership.” It’s notsomething that we should shy away from. Ask yourself if youhave ever sponsored a new member. If not, why not? Nobles, without new members, it makes the task of keeping ourHospitals running that much harder.

How many Nobles have had the privilege of visiting a ShrineHospital or driving one of our kids to our Hospitals? If youhaven’t, then you are missing out one of the great missions inlife.

Let me tell you a story of one of the Nobles with the OrilliaShrine Club. Noble Brian was transporting a young boy to the

Montreal Hospital because he didn’t have the bone growingcorrectly in one of his legs. It was obvious that it had to beamputated. The doctors left it up to the young lad to make thedecision. Without hesitation he said, “cut it off” so I can get anartificial leg and run like the other kids.

He also was born with six toes on one foot and four fingerson one hand. Do you know what he did? Well he took an inkprint of his foot and hand and gave it to our driver. If you thinkthat Noble Brian didn’t cry with pride, then you would bewrong.

Imagine if you will, this young boy is about to have anamputation and thinks enough of this driver to give him thisprecious gift.

Nobles, this is what being a Shriner is all about. We need toshare these experiences with new members. “Let’s start toshare.”

Woody’s Quote: Every morning when you wake up, you have a choice of two

things. 1) Do something good for someone 2) Or do nothing today Which did you choose today?

By the time you read this May issue, the RamesesFinancial Meeting will have come and gone as well asthe Assistant Rabban’s Leadership Seminar. Thank you

to all who attended; hope you found it informative. Sunday May 24th is our Special Ladies Luncheon. Be sure to

contact these Ladies and invite them to our New Shrine Centreat 124 Queen’s Plate Drive.

The Nobles in Belleville are ready to host the SpringCeremonial. Thursday June 11th is the Stated meeting with theCeremonial to start on the 12th. All Clubs should plan to attendthe Feast to honour your Potentate, your Club and mostimportantly, our newest members and their spouses.

Rameses Shrine Circus starts at Ancaster Fairgrounds on June

19th to the 21st. Bayfield Mall Barrie June 26th to 28th,Markham Fairgrounds July 1st to the 12th, BramptonFairgrounds July 17th to 19th, Milton Fairgrounds July 31st toAug 3rd. We need each Club and Unit to plan to attend to helpwork the exits for Fire Watch thus enabling us to meet therequirements of the Fire Marshall. Please call me at 705-428-0115 or email me at [email protected] to schedulethe time your Club or Unit can attend so we can have all theshows covered. The Circus is our greatest fundraiser and weneed your help to be successful.

The Imperial Council Session will be in Houston, Texas, July3rd to 9th. This would be a great event to attend. There are stillrooms available. Call Rina at the Shrine Office for details.

August 15th is the official opening of our new RamesesShrine Headquarters at 124 Queen’s Plate Drive. We welcomeeveryone to attend this special occasion, as this will be RamesesShriners home for the future.

Have a great summer!

Nobles, as I write this column, Lady Christine and I areabout to attend a seminar at the Shrine H.Q. inTampa, Florida. It is intended to hone the skills and

educate the newly minted Oriental Guides. Topics includeleadership, membership, even media relations. This has causedme to reflect on the challenges we will face as a Club and Ipersonally as a member of the Divan. As we are all aware, wewere formed by a group of Masons with the purpose “To haveFun”.

With all our “Snowbirds” returned to their northern roosts itis an ideal time to reconnect. Get them back and get the “F”(Fun) back into your Clubs.

Strongly consider attending the upcoming Ceremonial inBelleville. While there, meet with the other Nobles from the areaClubs. Most have hospitality suites or the host Club Oasis. It’s agreat place to swap ideas and make new friendships. I believestrongly if we have fun, everything including Membership andHospital Support will fall into place. As Ill. Sir James’ mottogoes, “Driving for our Kids”. See you in Belleville!

While vacationing inFlorida, this reporterhad the opportunity

to attend the 90th East/West ShrineGame which was held at TropicanaField, St. Petersburg.

This football event bringstogether the best college players forone All Star Game. Many of these young men have beenscouted and will be drafted to go onto the National FootballLeague. Last year, 70 players signed N.F.L. contracts.

There were over 22,000 people attending the game withmany participating in the Walk For Love and the pregameTailgate Party. The final score was East 19 and West 3 but thereal winner was the awareness created for our ShrinersHospitals for Children.

This event was viewed on television and a sea of red jacketsand red fezzes lit up the seats.

It was announced that over one million children have beenhelped through our Shrines Hospitals. Now that’s a greatachievement we should all be proud of.

So if you get a chance while you are vacationing in thesunny south, try and take in this great event and meet somefellow Shriner.

“Work Hard and Give Back” werethe words Noble Floyd Sinton lived by.

Noble Floyd Sinton was the loving husband and best friendof Barbara (Gray). He passed away surrounded by his family atRoyal Victoria Health Centre, Barrie, on Wednesday, March 18th,2015. He was a loving father to his late Stan (2009) and muchloved Grandpa to Alexa, 15, Maclain, 13 and Olivia, 9. Brotherof the late Jim Sinton and brother of R. Allan Sinton and hiswife Joyce; brother-in-law of Sharon and the late Doug, and Jim(J.R.) Gray and his wife Corine; very special Uncle and GreatUncle of many Nieces and Nephews.

On Saturday March 28, 2015 a Visitation Service andCelebration of Life was held at Seckley Gooderham FuneralHome in Barrie and was also broadcast to our Sheba ShrineCentre where more than one hundred Shriners and friends hadgathered. I would like to share with you some of Floyd’s life andmemories.

Floyd’s story starts in 1952 at the age of 16, while going toschool and working at his father’s gas station on weekendsFloyd came up with an idea. He borrowed $900 from his fatherand purchased a 1949 International school bus to take hisfriends from Craighurst to Barrie Central Collegiate High Schoolin Barrie. This was the humble beginning of what was to be.Hard work, perseverance and honesty were the principles Floydhad inherited from his father.

In 1968 Floyd married Barb Gray of Hawkstone and from dayone they became a team working side by side building theirbusiness and creating jobs and friendships along the way.

Sixty years later, Sinton Transportation had 300 buses andvans, 6 coaches and 3 limos. The family business employed 500people full and part time and was based in Barrie, Newmarketand Collingwood.

In 2013 Floyd and Barb sold their company to LandmarkTransportation. Floyd is recognized as one of the foundingmembers of The Ontario Bus Association and was made aHonourary Life Member.

Floyd was a member of Kempenfelt Lodge #673 and was a33 Degree Scottish Rite Mason.

He was a member of the 4th Degree and 16th Degree and aregular attendee of the Maundy Thursday and Easter SundayCeremonies. He served as transportation chair for both the 1997and 2013 Supreme Council Sessions hosted by the Valley ofBarrie.

In 1967 Floyd joined Rameses and Sheba Shrine Club. Hechaired the fundraising committee in the late 90’s and was

instrumental in raising over $300,000 dollars for the additionand renovation of our building.

Floyd was the Transportation and Travel Co-ordinator forSheba Shrine Centre. For decades Floyd looked after buses forThe Annual Whitefish Bonspiel, Coaches for trips to ourMontreal Hospital, Transportation for Spring Ceremonials and hewas always there to help our Nobles get from one place toanother.

Noble Floyd Sinton had a big heart and was a man of fewwords. You didn’t get to know Floyd, he got to know you. Weshould all follow his example and “Work Hard and Give Back”.

Floyd was a True Mason and a Noble Shriner, quietly givingof himself fulfilling the needs of others and never looking forrecognition.

We will all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with LadyBarb Sinton. Your Shrine Family feels your sorrow and willalways be here for you.

“Work Hard and Give Back” Noble Floyd M. SintonAmbassador Emeritus

Subjects:

• A Successful Leadership Seminar• The Question…

“What is the next “Un-met Child Care Need” for Shriners to help Children”

My Dear Fellow Representatives,We have just recently concluded this year’s leadership seminar. Asmentioned in past years, the attendees were each of our 22 hospital’sAdministrators, Chiefs of Staff, Heads of Nursing, Directors of FiscalServices, Directors of Research, and our Chairman and Vice Chairman. This is the annual conference relating to the “Operations of ourMedical System”.

The comments of those attending indicated that this was the best andmost informative seminar they have attended. We believe we understand why they felt this way.

For the last six years, we have been asking all of our 22 “Shriner’sHospitals” leaders to be re-inventing the hospitalsystem… This is from the low position all of us found ourselves inthat Summer of 2009.

• During that fall of 2009, every area of our organization began analyzing the cost of those operations versus the clinical needs we were accomplishing at eachhospital.

• In the beginning of 2010, we began the extensive process of starting the “Third Party Payments”process. This was monumental and required a lot of work from both the hospitals and Tampa’s staff. Many contracts had to be negotiated. Many Medicaid Agreements needed tobe worked out. This whole process later became known as “Revenue Cycle”. In 2014 it brought us a much-needed additional $130 million to help towards balancing the budget. We hope to increase that annual sum another $40 million in the near future.

• During the Fall of 2010, we began a Task Force groupthat visited each hospital, working with them to see if a more efficient way of operating could be done there, and…

• During the Fall of 2013, we rolled out individual Strategic Plans for each of the 22 locations with certain goals to be accomplished.

For these last 6 years they have been working very hard tonot only reach this new strategic goal but to exceed it. Each ofthese events have taken a lot of time and hard work from both ourheadquarters’ staff and each hospital.

This past year, 2014, we have begun the fine-tuning of all ofthese changes.

Whereas the past seminars needed to be “pushing hard”…this years 2015 “Leadership conference” could be and was… morepositive and motivating. One of the highlights of this years Leadership Conferencewas each hospitals “presentation to everyone” of their“Success Story”.Many comments related to this. They indicated, “How good it was for everyone to be able to see howdifferently each hospital delivers the mission.

Now in 2015…we are able to be doing the fine-tuning of thehospital system into the best it can be.

We have all just concluded the 1st part of the Renaissance ofShriners Hospitals for Children.

So what’s next….Where do we go from here? What will be the next Care we provide?

As you will remember….In 1872, 13 Masons decided to form a new “Fun Loving”group of Free Masons. They called themselves the “Ancient ArabicOrder of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine”…Shriners.

During the next 50 years, this group of Shriners had great fraternal fun.It grew quite quickly from coast to coast during those years, in both thenumber of Temples and members .

In 1922, the fraternity decided there was an “Un-Met Need” forsomeone to help children who had been afflicted with Polio. Duringthe next 5 years, 14 of our Temples began hospitals around NorthAmerica to help these children.

In the 1960’s, the Shrine fraternity again became aware that childrenwho got burned or scalded didn’t do very well. They would be admittedinto the general population of a adult or general hospital. A child witha 50% burn usually did not survive.

Another “Un-met Need”.

Shriners accepted this challenge and began 3 Burns Hospitals. The firstone opened in Galveston Texas on March 20, 1966.

In the 50 years since 1966, Shriners have greatly improved thesurvivability of children that have this tragedy befall them. Now a child with a 95% burn has a 95% probability ofsurviving.

During those same 50 years, our 22 hospitals have continued to evolveinto some of America’s greatest Children’s Hospitals. Shriners havehelped more than 1 million children in our 92 years of care.

In addition to the “Burns’ Children”, we have been providinggreat medicine in the fields of Orthopedics, Cerebral Palsy,Scoliosis, Spina Bifida, Cleft Lip and Palate and SpinalCord Injuries.

We can all take great pride in how our Shrine fraternity has

stepped forward and led the way to helping children throughthese years.

But where do we go from here? What is the next great “Un-met” need of Children?

This was one of the main subjects discussed at the seminar. Is there “A next” pressing un-met need for Children….

A “Game Changer” to use a popular sports metaphor.

A question you might have… “Why now?”Why can’t our 22 hospitals continue on “as they have been for the lastnumber of years. The Answer…. “Most can”…. but a few of our hospitals needan additional new path.

Why is this?

Markets are shifting:A few of our current locations that have had plenty of familiesneeding our care in the past, now have a differentdemographic. Our mission of orthopedics has been slowingthere. We still have a great facility, with a highly skilled medical staff, but justnot enough children needing this discipline of the “orthopedicmedicine” we provide.

And…Competition is increasing & “Referrals” from our affiliates are slowing:

The “Affordable Care Act” in 2015, is continuing to affect us. It ispushing some of our affiliates to admit more children to their ownfacility and not refer them to us as they have done in the past. They now need those children’s “Billings” to cover their “growingcost of operations” at their hospital.

So what can we do to help a few of our hospitals increase theamount of care they provide?

As our predecessors did in the 1920’s and 1960’s, we are exploring…what do today's children need the most.

Here are some of the “Un-met Needs” of this generationof Children…

• Obesity • Diabetes • Early Childhood Development • Autism • Rehabilitation and Sub-acute Care • Additional “General Surgery” and • Sports Medicine

So why aren’t the above being handled by the otherChildren’s Hospitals?

There are two other facts that we have found …

• Even though there are becoming more families with “Insurance” provided through the “AffordableCare Act”, many of these families are substantially“Under-insured” or have huge deductibles.

• And much of what children need in the year 2015, isnot covered by the insurance they have…or theinsurer doesn’t receive enough reimbursement…so the larger hospitals won’t provide the care.

Let’s do a quick review of the needs.

Obesity…Digestive Health. Needs: In the last 30 years, childhood obesity has more thandoubled and in adolescents, it has quadrupled. This continuesinto adulthood causing severe health complications and quality of lifeissues. A premier digestive health program could also lead Shriners Hospitalsinto a robust “collaborative research environment” to improvethe general health of children.

Diabetes…Needs: Childhood and adolescent diabetes is becoming one of themost important health problems in the United States. 1.93cases/1000 children and growing. It is the 7th leading cause ofdeath and has a high propensity to lead to severe adult complications. This discipline could also lead to a robust research program to improvelives.

Early Childhood Development/Autism…Needs: The community need is at an “All time high” with theneeds having increased 17.1% over the last 12 years. In 2012, the prevalence rate rose to 1 in 110 children, a 600%increase over the past two decades.

Rehabilitation and Sub acute Care…This is currently Shriners Hospitals largest service provided byvolume. It could be referred to as either a Skilled Nursing focusor a Specialized Surgical Hospital focus. It can help provide usgreater “Brand Identification, Identity, and Image”.

Sports Medicine…Shriners Hospitals could perhaps have a single Hospital locationthat would attract the major sports injury problems from allaround the country. With the right staffing and surgical teams, it couldbecome known as the top“Sports Injury Care Center” of theUnited States.

And an expansion of our General Surgery procedures….Because of where some of our hospitals are located, the area might belacking a “General Children’s Hospital” with “Specialty Care”. OurShriners Hospital could provide those additional surgical specialtiesbecause of our financial wherewithal and expertise.

This would be very complimentary to what we currently do. Some ofour hospitals during these last 6 years of the Renaissance havesuccessfully already expanded their Surgical Lines.

These and the other medical issues of “Our Times” maybecome the next part of the Philanthropy that we have becomeknown for.

What will be the next “Care” for the greatest Philanthropythe world has ever known…

Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Before I close this “Winter” message….

Patricia and I just watched our latest television commercial. This is the one with “our Shrine kids” doing the speaking and telling our “Shiners Hospital” story.

I hope, when you see it, you have the same “chest swelling” and“sense of pride” of our philanthropy that Patricia and I experienced.

By Noble Doug Griffin SSCCS (Sheba Shrine Club Chief Scribe)

Here I sit on the burning sands of Florida in February. The sunmakes me sweat but also melts the ice in my drink. Ahh . . . what a dilemma! Well I guess it’s better than the cold air

taking my breath away and freezing my bottom. (I am trying to bepolite) like you fellows up north. I always watch the Barrie weatherreports before I take my morning walk on the beach. It gives me mymorning smile!

Writing this editorial has been difficult due to my proximity to theequator. I would like to thank all my “Northern Subscribes” for diggingthemselves out and driving through blizzards to supply me with all thegossip. But I must warn you that my interpretation of their notes maybe different from the actual facts.

So while I freshen up my drink and rub some more sunscreen onthis wrinkled old body (now that’s a pretty picture), please read on.

The 50th Anniversary Whitefish Bonspiel was a great success with28 teams competing for trophies and prizes. From the openingceremony to the throwing of the last rock, everyone had a great time. For many, the ice was unforgiving with a lot of stones crashing intothe boards while others fell short of the circle. I am sure it had nothingto do with the ability of the competitors. Styles varied with someNobles bending their elbows (the cheering section) while the othersbent their knees (the stone slingers). It became obvious everyone’sbody had been filled with some type of winning spirit.

Festivities started on the Friday with the Meet and Greet whereNobles swapped stories of past bonspiels, remember shots missed andmet old friends. Then it was off to the Curling Club for the OpeningCeremony. “Mr. Whitefish”, Noble Peter Hughson (whose costume is50 years old) led the procession onto the ice sliding and pulling theceremonial Whitefish rock with him.

Here is a footnote: Noble Scott Rowe carved the Whitefish Rockwhich is now being used. The original frozen whitefish which was areal whitefish was replaced last year after being kicked around the icefor forty-eight years. It had lost most of its fins and suffered fromsevere freezer burn. We were not sure whether we should mount it oreat it. After a brief discussion we decided to bury it in a Time Capsulewhose whereabouts is unknown.

Next onto the ice was the Sheba Colour Party. Boy! This Unitknows how to dress! They proudly waved their flags and carried thebanner in step to the music of the Piper and the Drummer. Bringing upthe rear were some of the players with their brooms hoisted high, orin some cases acting as support to hold them up. This wholeprocession went round the rink and finally stopped in front of a line ofdignitaries. The local reporters, photographers and Papyrus Paparazziquickly moved in to capture the moment for posterity. Noble RonStewart, one of the original founders of the Whitefish dropped theopening rock.

And so it began “The 50th Anniversary Whitefish Bonspiel and15th Annual Terry Harris Memorial Event”.

The Whitefish Breakfast was held at our Sheba Club and featuredthe traditional eye opener or orange juice popper. Some of thesefellows really needed it while others just wanted to top up their ownliquid deficiencies. Noble Joe Malek and his Breakfast Crew made sureeveryone had enough to get them though the morning. Then it was offfor a day of curling!

Special footnote: The Whitefish Bonspiel has been held at theBarrie Curling Club from the beginning in 1965 and Nobles still askwhere the washrooms are but everyone can find the lounge.

A special thanks to the Editor-in-Chief and Papyrus Photographer

Noble Joe Johnson for taking the pictures. Most of these unforgettablememories were captured for eternity. It is too bad that some Noblesaren’t that photogenic. You can check the photos to see which ones.

Curling stopped at noon and everyone had a break. Our guestswere treated to lunch at the homes of Sheba Nobles. This is always agreat time where we can get to know each other and show off ourliquor cabinets. Thanks to Brian Weekes for organizing this year’sHome Hospitality and the Sheba Nobles that had to restock theirfridges.

That evening everyone gathered for the Whitefish Banquet. NoblePaul Fockler delivered a masterfully crafted verbal synopsis of theweekend’s activities. He left no stone unturned and no personuntouched. Most of this of course cannot be repeated because of theWhitefish Pledge of Allegiance “What Happens At The Whitefish StaysAt The Whitefish”.

Ambassador Earl Login presented Illustrious Sir James T. Renniewith Gold and Silver CommemorativePlate in recognition of the WhitefishGolden Jubilee Celebration.

The Whitefish Trophy Winners fromthe Viking Shrine Club were NoblesGerry Downer, D. J. Slessor, Chris Tooleand Tom Pearson with Coach SteveMuir

The Minnow Trophy Winners fromthe Muskoka Shrine Club were Nobles Gary Kaye, Dave Forth, RickHaroutunian and Boyd Smith

The Third Event Trophy Winners from The Waubuno Shrine Clubwere Nobles Doug Kerr, Roy Milligan, Ron Lillie and Roger Burdon

The Fourth Event Trophy Winners from The Oshawa Shrine Clubwere Nobles Charles Richards, Kevin Fudge, Vic Phillips and KyleHovey.

Every curler was given a 50th Anniversary Crest with gold trim, a50th Anniversary pin and a souvenir program as well as unforgettablememories.

A special announcement was made by our Potentate Illustrious SirJames T. Rennie when he bestowed the Emeritus Status to two of theWhitefish key participants Noble Paul Fockler was given the title ofMaster of Ceremonies Emeritus and Noble Stuart Crockatt was giventhe title of Draw Master Emeritus. This is truly fitting because thesetwo Nobles have given their time and talent to ensure that everyWhitefish Bonspiel was memorable for all who attended.

Congratulations! You both have brought recognition to Sheba andRameses.

The Annual Whitefish Ring Draw was also held that evening. Thewinner was Gloria Chambers, wife of Sheba’s own Noble Bob Hoyle, who coincidently sold her the ticket. As a member of Sheba’s ColourParty, Bob has said he will bring Gloria to the next meeting to showoff her new rock. He also said he would also pick up the lunch tab forall who attended. This should be a good turnout!

A Really Special Note: At our Regular Meeting in January two ofthe Original Founders of The Whitefish Bonspiel were honoured by ourDivan. Those two Nobles are Jack Wallwin and Ron Stewart. So onbehalf of all the curlers past and present and all the Nobles of ShebaShrine Club we want to thank you for 50 years of memories. The“Whitefish” has truly become a winter event that is known to all theNobles of Rameses and an annual destination for many.

This concludes all the notes I was given concerning the WhitefishWeekend. I hope I got the facts right and didn’t offend anyone. But asusual most of what really happened did not get written and the onlyway you will truly know what happens at the Whitefish is to be therenext year.

I have never curled and I am still trying to understand theterminology. So here is how I would announce a typical game. Let’s see how well you know the language of the

sport. I am here at the Whitefish Bonspiel consisting of twenty-

eight rinks. It has been a great competition with a lot of well-delivered stones. We are down to the last end. There seems tobe a lot of pebble in the house around the circles, near the tee,the tee line and especially the button. This area has taken a biteout of a few well-thrown rocks.

The front end found the heavy ice. Whether it was an in turnor out turn every stone would lose its handle and come short ofthe takeout.

The sweepers had to hurry hard to get a draw on any shotrock.

Now here’s where it gets interesting! The Skip is coming home and wants his third to deliver a hit

and roll or a freeze on a counter to finish his end but he has tocome around a guard and a buried stone left by his lead to getin the house to hit the lie shot. He doesn’t want to come uplight or be heavy because his second’s rock is a long guard nearthe hog line so he must deliver the right draw weight. Heknows it won’t be an eight ender and there won’t be an extraend. The ice is keen, the vice skip wearing his slider and grippersets himself in the hack and begins his slide. Using his broomfor balance and keeping his focus he delivers the rock with agentle twist. The stone hurls down the centerline of the sheetbut is way off the broom with too much weight. It looks like itsheading for the backboards. Is it going to be too narrow orbecome a double or a draw or a hit or a raise?

Here comes the shot. It looks good! It has position! Wait!Wait for it! To be continued.

This curling season has drawn to an end - no pun intended.

Curling - as I see it!

By Noble Tom ArmstrongMUSKOKA SHRINE CLUB

Muskoka in the winter can be a cold and very snowyplace. This winter is both, so Shrine activities are the way for us hardy souls who don’t fly away to

hot places in the winter to keep warm. Our February meeting night fits into this category, minus 28,

which goes to show the toughness of the Shriners left behind. But we were there and our bus driver liked it so much that hehas put in his application to join our Club at the SpringCeremonial. Yee haw fun to look forward to and it was a warmmeeting too!

The Installation night was a great success with our IllustriousPotentate, Jim Rennie, honouring and entertaining us with somestories and installing the 2015 executive.

It must be too hot in Florida as President Elect Noble Boyd

Smith flew home just to be Installed. It was a great night withall of our Ladies and friends there to help mark this specialoccasion.

This is the 5th year that the Muskoka Shrine Club HillbillyUnit Outhouse #3 Clan 46, with help from some of their cuzinsfrom Stouffville, hosted a fantastic pancake breakfast at theDorset Snowball Winter Carnival feeding plenty of cold folks andraising some money for our great cause. We even had a specialguest; local MPP Laurie Scott came by to sample some of thegreat food. The fellowship was exemplary and for me, meetingShriners from other Clubs was fantastic - just another way tokeep warm on a cold Muskoka day.

Rabban of the Clan, Bob Ruck, has asked me to thank all ofthe Shriners and their Ladies who helped out and to inviteShriners from all over Ontario to come and enjoy some deliciouspancakes and sausages next year. The event is always held onthe third Saturday in February.

I had to make a breakaway from the cold this February, so ona trip to Florida, Idragged my family toShrine Headquarters inTampa. The museumtour was great as Ilearned lots I didn’tknow about ourfraternity and aboutsome of the characterswho have donned afez to support ourhospitals. It was agreat way to warmyour heart and yourbody from a coldMuskoka winter.

When it’s cold outside, the MuskokaShrine Club Facebook page is keeping us warm with lots ofnews about what Shriners are doing all over the world, how thehospitals are helping kids everywhere as well as showingMuskoka Shriners off in pictures. Come on over and check usout, like us, share anything that we post and post anything thatyour Club is up to so we can all stay connected and keep warm.

Hopefully spring is coming, the days are getting longer, thethermometer is not straining and the snowbirds are cominghome. I myself am looking forward to fun outside, SpringCeremonial and not having to shovel snow.

Muskoka knows how to beat cold

NEW ADDRESS

By Noble Dennis Hladysh, Past President OAKVILLE SHRINE CLUB

The Oakville Club continues to blossom despitechallenges of finding new members. Case in point. At arecent meeting the marketing/membership group

created a successful open house for Master Masons to “taste”the fun and fellowship of our Club at a special meeting held atMo’s Restaurant, our regular meeting site. Before the eveningwas completed, several of the 14 “candidates” either handed inmembership applications or committed to joining before theyear-end. This will be a continuing event. Our membershipchairman will be glad to share his expertise.

Oakville Nobles also recognized the sales effort of ouroutstanding senior members Noble Harry Troughton and NobleLorne Brisbin who have had a friendly rivalry for close to adecade. These Nobles have individually averaged 4 - 6 thousanddollars in cake sales each year. Both Nobles are in their prime at

88 and 93 years ofage. So you youngerNobles have noexcuse. A framedcertificate waspresented by thevisiting Potentate Ill.Sir Jim Rennie. Seephoto at left.

Oakville’s second 50 years

Noble Dave Lewis recently celebrated a milestone birthdayand decided to share his gifts with a local charity calledErinOakKids which helps local kids with developmentalproblems. He asked partygoers to give gift cards instead ofpresents. He presented a cheque to the group on behalf of ourClub, which totaled $1,100. See photo above.

The Montreal Bus Trip is nearly sold out. The event willculminate at the opening of our new Hospital August 19-21.Participants quickly purchased their bus tickets based on theirFeztastic time on previous Club outings.

Reviewing our history, I came across an interesting eventwhich helped launch our Club’s philanthropy. In the beginningsof our Club (1963) our Nobles decided to have a special eveningwhich included fatherless boys from the area and a very famoushockey player called Frank Mahovlich (No. 6) from the TorontoMaple Leafs’ heyday. At the end of the meal and speeches eachboy was given an autographed hockey stick. Nobles, somethingto think about for today’s youth? Sometimes we have to lookback in order to go forward.

If you are looking for a smaller active Club give us a visit.
