  • I was born in a small town in upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains. I

    was always surrounded by beauty.

The main trade was tourism, where

    hundreds of hotels and bungalow

colonies drew tens of thousands of

    visitors every summer. It epitomized

the notion of a white picket fence

    community, where doors were never

locked, and everyone truly knew your

    name.

My earliest memories are steeped in

interior design. My best friend and I

would spend hour upon hour on our

elaborate designs for homes for our

    Barbie dolls. Tissue boxes became

    furniture, napkins served as textiles,

and her brothers Lego blocks served

us well providing walls and doors.

    Apartments morphed into penthous-

    es, penthouses into mansions. The

    seed was planted.

Having grown up in the mountains, I

was always inspired by nature. The

colors of autumn were a constant

source of inspiration to me, and to this

day strongly inl uence my personal design aesthetic. The richness of the

hues combined with the warmth of

the colors are a constant reminder of

    my interpretation of home.

    After graduating from high school,

I went to college for a short time to

pursue a degree in the retail business/

    hospitality industry. The initial allure

faded quickly, and I left school to

travel for a while. It was during my

travels that I really discovered my

desire to pursue a career in design. I

lived a number of different places,

and there were times that those plac-

es did not exactly measure up to my

aesthetic ideal. I had to tap into my

    creativity to somehow transform these

places into the welcoming oases that

I needed for them to be so Id want to

go home at night. I was the one that

people came to for decorating ideas

and advice based on my passion and

    vision for beautifying spaces. Seeing

people appreciate my efforts on their

behalf was validation that I could

excel at something I loved to do.

As is often the case, life intervened,

and I had to shelve my aspirations of

    becoming a designer, always with

the intent of resuming it at the right

time. I became a wife and a moth-

er. At the time, I had no conception

of the notion that you could work at

something you love and make a living

doing it. The opportunity to pursue

a career in design became more

and more remote. It was after raising

my family that I began to imagine,

for the i rst time in thirty-three years,

the possibility of i nally pursuing my dream. A few inquiries and a lot of

    soul-searching later, I found myself

enrolled in school and on my way to

a degree in interior design. The mere

fact that I had waited so long made it

that much more important, that much

more imperative that I do everything I

could to be the best version of my-

self possible. I made a commitment

to give it everything I had to i nally realize what I had always felt good

things come to those who wait.

The opportunity to devote myself to

my lifelong dream of becoming a

    design professional and seeing that

dream come to fruition is truly amaz-

ing. The prospect of helping people

realize the beauty within their spaces

through my vision is the single driving

force behind my tenacity and deter-

    mination. I am especially focused

on the renovation and restoration of

beautiful older homes to their former

    glory without compromising their

    architectural history. The idea of

transformation is what compels me as

a both a designer and a person, and

the opportunity to be a part of that

transformation will forever dei ne who I am as I continue to grow as both.

he design plan encompasses all of the elements clearly desired by the client chic but classic, bold accents with understated elegance, and trendiness that transcends timelessness. It is the incorpora-tion of the melding of personal style and person-ality to create a uniied and functional space. he layout provides the perfect backdrop for entertaining without compromising or interfering with personal space. he low allows for seamless transition between the two without the impres-sion of vastly diferent living areas.he lighting is deliberately conscripted to show-case carefully selected areas and artwork, while more subtly encasing other areas in more difuse and intimate light.Contemporary, eclectic and unconventional furnishings give the space its unexpected but exclusive vibe. Color abounds, but in carefully orchestrated expanses so as not to overwhelm with boldness, but to give meaningful deinition to each deliberately designed area to make one largely successful cohesive space.

    Concept Statement

The incorporation of historical and meaningful ele-ments while maintaining a contemporary feel best describes the intention of the space. The general lay-out and fairly limited amount of space dictates that an open l oor plan with convertible elements would be the ideal solution to incorporate into the overall design. Tatami mats will be used to regulate some of rooms size and dimensions. The garden room is in-tegral to the space, and due to its signii cance great care must be taken in the placement, space allotted and the availability of natural light. The addition of a kotasu or traditional Japanese table that sits very low to the ground will enhance the gardens Asian vibe. Niches and shelving will be created throughout the space to provide display areas for the display of Blakes Buddha collection. A Tokonoma, or recessed space used in traditional Japanese architecture will also be incorporated for the display of some of the Japanese cultural elements. Shoji screens, paper screens that allow for the penetration of light, will be placed throughout the space to provide privacy and options for opening or closing off most of the rooms with the exception of the powder room and master bathroom. The implementation of the various clas-sical Japanese elements, combined with the more contemporary aspects of the apartment itself will work together to dei ne the distinctive style .

Concept StatementA spa is a place of respite, relaxation and rejuvenation. The mission in designing the spa was to create a space that provides ample opportunity to achieve these things, while keeping in mind the actual space and the best use of that space. Flow is of paramount impor-tance. The space plan has to be conducive to how the space is being used. Therefore, the way you move through the space was the key concern in the overall concept. The inspiration for the spa is snow. It is meant to evoke a clean, crisp and peaceful atmosphere, where the focus in on the experience rather than the dcor. The shape of each pool was inspired by the multi-faceted snowlake, of which there are no two alike. Just as each snowlake is unique in its differences, so is the experience of each individual pool. The custom tile is modeled after the snowlake concept as well, its subtle colors meant to convey the beauty and understate-ment of actual snow. The elements included a reception area, three pools, a sunroom and mens and womens locker room/lounges. The client enters into the reception area, and then pro-ceeds to the conveniently situated locker room area. From there, there is a natural low to the hot pool, then up one level to the warm pool, and from there down two levels to the plunge/cold pool. The last pool leads directly into the sunroom, a room of quiet comfort and relection, which leads back to the locker room area. Each area provides easy and adjacent access to the next area, and serves as a complement to the entire spa experience.

Baseball has long been considered Americas na-tional pasttime. Stadiums, parks, sporting goods stores and ields all over the world have been inspired simply by the love of baseball.

The inspiration for the space was baseball. It was de-signed to recreate the vintage baseball stadium feel the is reminicent of some of the original stadiums built in the early 20th century. The reclaiimed brick walls and recycled baseball bats are meant to evoke a time and place that signify the beginning of a grand era.

The Rawlings Company is a pioneer in the base-ball realm. The showroom features grand historical references while simultaneously creating a feeling of stepping back in time. The glass entrance is grand and inviting, and beckons the visitor to move toward the signing desk. From there, there is a natural low to tto various display areas on the main level. The up-per level mimics the stadium experience with typical ballpark fare offered via carts and vending machines. The lower level provides a unique baseball experi-ence through a virtual batting cage and replica of a major league dugout. Each area is meant to leave a lasting impression on the visitor regarding their trip through baseball history.

Small spaces can pose various challenges. In the case of an executive with very speciic requirements, care has to be taken to provide the necessary elements without overwhelming the space. The overall design had to relect the personality of its inhabitant while at the same time provide privacy and warmth. The deci-sion was made to design a custom carpet and build on that design for the remainder of the space. Con-temporary furnishings, though minimal were utilized to complement the modern asthetic of the carpet. The main focus was to make the space look furnished without looking crowded. The color palette relects the contempory and semi-industrial of feel the space.

The University Career Counseling Center will become an integral part of this medium-size,

state-supported university and will provide curriculum and career counseling for all levels of

students. Seminar-type instruction will be provided for college and high school educators, who

are themselves counselors. In addition, the director and the directors staff are considered the

universitys primary resource for career information and employment opportunities for gradu-

ates and have a major role to play with each of the institutions departments of professional

education. The center serves not only the adjacent campus but also three other branch cam-

puses located in other parts of the state. This statewide activity often brings overnight guests to

the center, creating a need for a guest apartment, which would generally be used for one- or

    two-night stays.

The bulk of the centers trafi c is generated by a fairly constant l ow of students and recent graduates, most of whom come with a specii c appointment time. Several times each week, groups ranging in size from 6 to 30 come for conferences, seminars, lectures, and group coun-

seling. The director and assistant director will each see several visitors on a typical day, usually

    coming alone or in pairs.

  • COSMOPOLITAN CLUB

Following the lead of other metropolitan chapters, the local chapter of a national business and professional organization has decided to initiate its own private dining club. The clubs purposes are to provide a meeting place for members, a place to entertain nonmember friends and business associates, and a dining place of predictable fare and atmosphere where one is known. The design program was established after lengthy consultation with the managers of other dining clubs within the national organization and a local food service con-sultant.

The overall ambience should be friendly, businesslike, and more formal than informal. Lunch is the major meal of the day, although dinner will be served as well. Previous experience indi-cates that men and women diners will be equal in number. The bar and lounge activity is expected to be limited; again, previous experience indicates that members expect the lunch hour to be limited, without the luxury of an extended midday break. Because the membership is fairly diverse in nature, a strong theme in cuisine or decor is not desired. Thegeneral trafi c patterns are obvious, but in circumstances where a separate service entrance is not possible (as in the case of a high-rise ofi ce building), service deliveries and garbage pickup must be routed with minimal passage through public spaces and strictly scheduled for non-dining hours. The managers ofi ce should be located fairly close to the entry, and ideally

  • Concept Statement

The Soitel Hotel in Times Square commissioned a group of students to create their holiday display by transforming their lobby by providing a unique and unexpected design experience.

The Art Deco style of the hotel lent itself to the overall concept by dictating the materials and elements inherent to the Art Deco movement.

We were divided into groups , with each group com-ing up with their own interpretation of their concept for the space.

The inal product is the result of the compilation of ideas from all of the groups.
