SHARNBASVESHWAR VIDYA VARDHAK SANGHA, GULBARGA(Glorious Dasoha in Education with Excellence since 1903)

Sharnbasveshwar Vidya Vardhak Sangha was founded in 1903 by Late Poojya Doddappa

Appa, the 7th Peethadhipati of Sharnbasveshwar Maha Dasoha Samsthan, Gulbarga. It made a

humble, yet a noble beginning with its first school housed in Mahadasoha Mahamane-the spiritual

abode where Lord Sharnbasveshwar lived. Since then, it has never looked back and has grown into

leaps and bounds, dedicating itself to the pursuit of service and excellence. In the course of time,

it has grown into a mammoth educational centre imparting Science, Commerce, Arts,

Management, Vocational, Engineering and Technical education to nearly Twenty Thousand

Students from LKG to PG in forty institutions spending nearly hundred crore in the span of

hundred years of its meaningful and eventful existence.

Many dignitaries have visited our institution – including the father of our nation Mahatma

Gandhi down to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul kalam, the Former President of India. They have paid rich

tributes to our Sangha as it has been rendering yeomen service by providing quality education to

the people of backward region.

There have been many innovations in teaching methodology in the recent past, especially

in higher education. But the essence of philosophy of our institution has remained as it was

enunciated by Lord Sharnbasveshwar. Students may acquire great knowledge which may or may

not be used by them in their life but the kind of education imparted in our institution lasts for

ever, which is more rooted in encouraging our students to be self reliant, inquisitive and positive

thinking governed by great tolerance. The education that we impart gives the students enormous

scope for independent thinking and absorbing the differences they confront in the society. The

knowledge acquired without subjecting it to enquiry has no relevance. Hence we infuse the spirit

of enquiry into the minds of young students.

Self-discipline and independent thinking are the two corner stones of our institution on

which the life of students is built. The faculty members make all-out efforts to stimulate

intellectual honesty among students. India is a land of composite culture, naturally the strength of

our campus is multi-cultures as there are students coming from different walk of life and they are

unified and united in our premises. This promotes better understanding among the students who

come from different backgrounds. We make the students learn how to cope-up with varied styles

and thinking, thereby motivate them to work together for the betterment of society. We make

tireless efforts to make our students responsible citizens of the world.

SHARNBASVESHWAR COLLEGE OF SCIENCE, GULBARGA

Sharnbasveshwar College of Science, functions under the aegis of Sharnbasveshwar Vidya

Vardhak Sangha which was founded by Late Poojya Doddappa Appa. Our college was established

in 1956 which provides education to students from rural and marginalized populations. It provides

relevant and job oriented curriculum with motto of “Service unto others” and developing

leadership and self-discipline among students.

The goals and objectives of the curriculum are derived from philosophy of Poojya Dr.

Sharanabasavappa Appa. It concentrates upon building a relationship between teachers and

students which promotes intellectual, spiritual and moral abilities of the students. It also aims at

fostering “Sharna Culture and tradition” among the students while simultaneously equipping them

for global competencies.

Our college is an urban grant-in- aid institution affiliated to Gulbarga University. Gulbarga

and has received recognisation from UGC under section 2 (f ) and 12B in 1968 and 1972

respectively. The college offers 18 subjects combination at UG and Post Graduate course in

Computer Science. Our college was the first institution which was Assessed and Accredited in 1999

by the NAAC in the Gulbarga University region and it was reaccredited in 2006. Our college is in

pursuit of providing quality education to its total strength of 1000 students. Our college results are

quite encouraging. Our students secure at least Two or Three Ranks every year invariably.

We have spacious and well equipped modern laboratories for all subjects Viz. Physics,

Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Statistics, Electronics and Computer Science. The UGC has funded to

purchase the equipments and modernize our laboratories. We have also research laboratories

funded by UGC which are used for the Minor & Major research projects under taken by the

faculty members.

Our college management has given great priority to provide library facility. We have a big

library building with spacious halls meant for reading. It works according to the open access

system with more than 40,000 volumes in different subjects. There are more than 13,000 volumes

UGC text books which will be lent to students. The book stack is updated time to time. We have

separate reading room of magazines and periodicals for girls and boys. Our library is a rich store

house of reference materials such as Encyclopedia, Factopedia, general studies and so on. We

have subscribed to many important Journals at national and international level. Our library works

morning to evening in order to facilitate students to take use of library facilities to the maximum

extent.

Our students have availed of many scholarships sponsored by various Government

agencies like C. V. Raman Merit scholarship, Sanchi Honnamma Merit scholarship for Girls,

Department of Collegiate Education, Karnataka Sate Vignana Parishat Scholarship and Department

of Science & Technology. Our college has also introduced some scholarships for meritorious

students.

As curricular activities help the students to develop their personality which makes them

academically sound. In addition also, co-curricular activities encourage all round development of

the students’ personality. Moreover all along the academic year we conduct many cultural

activities which act as cultural feast to the young minds.

To keep students engaged in these activities we have Science academy. All the students

are the members of the Academy; the Office bearers are nominated by the Principal, by

considering their academic achievements. Faculty Members guide and advise the students to

undertake meaningful activities all along the year.

We conduct a novel programme “CHAITANYA”, an exhibition meant for bringing out the

hidden talents of students. They are made to prepare models on various science subjects and

exhibit the same. Students consider this as an opportunity to expose themselves with exhibits

with great deal of earnestness and enthusiasm. The best exhibits are selected and recognized by

giving prizes. Our students have taken part in the District/State Level Science exhibition conducted

by the Govt. of Karnataka and they have received prizes at District/ State Level competition.

Our college students do participate in Sports and Games activities. We conduct annual

sports meet and students participate in various events. Many students have selected for

University Teams. Some of them have represented our college at State and National level.

We have two N.C.C. wings and an N.S. S. unit at our college. Our cadets and volunteers

have imbibed confidence and discipline which is quite complementary for the development of

students’ personality. We organize special camps for these students in rural areas every year. This

helps them to create awareness of social problems faced by the rural community.
