One key reason for establishing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is for the member countries to feel unified and have a sense of belonging to ASEAN. By building a shared identity through education, cultural exchange, language, art, environment, public health and support, the ASEAN people can achieve true integration. The ASEAN people also need to understand and accept human diversity so they can live together in harmony and peace.

The AEC will inspire the ASEAN people to act ethically and respect the value of social differences. As the ASEAN nations’ feeling of being one grows, so will ASEAN’s global bargaining power and regional effectiveness. ASEAN will be able to more timely resolve issues affecting its people’s lives, be it food, security, environmental concerns, climate change, economic and financial crises, terrorism or communicable disease. With the ASEAN nations’ populations considering themselves one unified whole with a unique shared identity as its aim, ASEAN is sure to become a true “Community of People.”

Understanding, accepting, learning about and respecting each country’s culture constitute an essential step towards building ASEAN’s economic strength and international competitiveness. And for a true and long-lasting ASEAN Community, the ASEAN people must be better able to adapt to one another in terms of business, investment, labor, education and more.

Here are a few insights from each ASEAN nation so you can see how more insight means greater understanding.

In Cambodia men who are friends may be seen holding hands. In Brunei and Indonesia pointing with your index finger is impolite. Use your thumb instead.

In Laos remove your shoes when entering someone’s home and drink any drink that is offered.

In Malaysia, use only your right hand to eat and receive or pass items.

In Myanmar, use both hands to hand out your business card.

In the Philippines, placing your hand on your waist indicates you are challenging someone while raising your eyebrows is a gesture of greeting.

In Vietnam taking photos of buildings where official state business is conducted is prohibited.

In Singapore, littering and public picking of fruit are not allowed.

Check out the suggested titles below to become more ASEAN savvy and achieve greater mutual understanding for us all!

REAd up on ClEAn Food for a healthier and happier you!

“Clean food” undergoes no or as little processing and seasoning as possible and is celebrated more for its natural features, freshness and higher nutritiousness. Preservative-loaded ready-made foods, MSG-ridden snacks and oily junk food are the complete opposite. “Clean” doesn’t mean only veggies. It refers to the right proportions of each food group. Thus carbohydrates and protein are in cleaner forms and amounts just right for your body. A clean food diet is ideal for shedding a few kilograms or body fat and for boosting health.

With the rise in health consciousness everyoneis paying more attention to what they eat. That, my fellow readers,

warrants a discussion of the concept of “clean food.”

How can you switch to a clean food diet? Don’t go cold turkey as you may become weak and irritable. Instead switch gradually by reducing the intake of your favorite foods little by little. Eat as many fresh foods as you can in every meal. Check out supermarkets’ fresh produce and meat but steer clear of refrigerated and frozen goods. Avoid products with added sugar. Choose fruit over sweetened foods. Say no to artificial flavors. And drink enough water or clean-food water alternatives like green tea.

Don’t completely forsake carbohydrates and fat. Just control your intake because they add taste and are an excellent source of energy. Baked goods

are still okay if you opt for almond or brown rice flour, for example, to reduce the carbohydrates. Get healthy fats from fish or various beans. Another trick is to check labels and refrain from buying anything with unfamiliar ingredients. Don’t worry about calories because, though they do affect weight gain or loss, they don’t reflect health and fretting over them can cause a nutrient deficiency.

Lastly, it’s always good to consult a book or two. And I’ve got just the right ones. Clean Slate: A Cookbook and Guide: Reset Your Health, emphasizes eating whole, unprocessed foods with delicious, healthy, beautifully photographed and easy recipes to keep you satisfied all day long. Clean Slate gives you nutritionally sound information to shop for and prepare food that nourishes body and mind with chapters like Replenish: "Get off to a good start,” Reboot: "Drink to your health” and Relax: "Have a little something sweet.”

Boost your weight loss, energy level and health with the "New York Times" bestselling 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. This book comes with a shopping list, recipes, and detailed instructions for healthy yet filling smoothies made up of leafy green and fruit supernutrients. Say goodbye to stubborn body fat and 10 to 15 pounds in 10 days without grueling workouts. 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse offers you a healthier detoxing lifestyle to look slimmer and sexier than you have in years!

Looking to rid your body of toxins, reclaim vibrancy and lose weight? I suggest Raw Food Cleanse. The book’s delicious and hunger-satisfying raw-food diets come in four powerfully detoxing customized plans. Also included are a toxin self-assessment, day-by-day programs, mouth-watering recipes and real-life success stories. Raw Food Cleanse’s “3-Day Energy Boost Cleanse” gives your body an all-natural weekend to start Mondays feeling great while its “7-Day Rejuvenation Cleanse” offers a week of delicious raw foods to thoroughly refresh your system. With “14-Day Deep Detox Cleanse” you’ll be able to go longer to experience a clearer mind, slimmer body and better skin and hair. And “28-Day Total Reset Cleanse” fully recharges the body with a nutrient-packed month of raw foods.

Another amazing read is The Paleo Kitchen. Two of the most well-respected Paleo powerhouses, George Bryant and Juli Bauer, have collaboratively produced all-new recipes taking the Paleo experience to new heights. Their culinary tricks and anecdotes are accompanied by full-color photos on virtually every page of appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts. The mega-talented blogging duo help you get started if you’re new to Paleo and show Paleo pros how to fine-tune for the best results. A fun read, The Paleo Kitchen shows you how to love your food and body!

Looking after yourself is more than trendy. It’s smart because you’ll get so much out of it both physically and mentally! Happy healthy reading!

Jeremy Rifkin uncovers a capitalism paradox - competitive entrepreneurial markets driving productivity up and marginal costs down. The resulting part-capitalist and part-Collaborative-Commons economy heralds a new world beyond markets of increasingly global interdependence. Millions of people are making and sharing their own green energy, 3D-printed products and other items at times via channels like social media at near zero marginal cost, while social entrepreneurs bypass the banking establishment and use crowdfunding for startup businesses. Access trumps ownership, sustainability supersedes consumerism, cooperation ousts competition, and “exchange value” is replaced by “sharable value”
