For our young people to be engaged in full time employment they need to be aware of where the jobs will be in the future. We are now going to have a look at some of the labour market information available to us. Over 5 years to May 2023, the Department of Jobs and Small Business projects employment will increase in 17 of the 19 broad industries. Total employment is projected to increase by 886,100 (7.1 per cent) over this period.

TOP INDUSTRIES FOR JOBS GROWTH (TO 2023)

Almost 2 in every 3 new jobs created will come from these four industries:

• Health Care and Social Assistance• Construction• Education and Training• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

So where will the jobs be in the future? - Health care and social assistance - Construction - Education and training - Professional, scientific and technical services Reasons for jobs growth in these industries: An ageing population, (the (NDIS), and growing demand for childcare and home-care based services is driving jobs growth. Investment in infrastructure (like roads, railways and airports) means jobs will continue to grow in the engineering construction sector. Workers will also be needed to build homes for our growing population The number of school-aged children is growing and there is strong demand for adult and community education. More people are working part-time. Demand is growing for qualified workers, especially in computer system design, and the management and consulting services sectors.

VET TRANSITION COURSES 2020

The VET pathway is for students who are looking at:

Completing a Certificate, WACE and going on to further study at TAFE/work;

Starting an apprenticeship at school and completing WACE;

Bridging to University Leaving school before

graduating.

In Year 11 students will complete four courses at school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

1. English2. Career and Enterprise 3. Maths Essentials/Applications

(Numeracy a must post school).4. An elective – to be determined

TAFE and Work Placements make up the other two (2) courses needed for WACE on Thursday/Friday.

THREE DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM

TAFE/ RTO’S

Attend TAFE’s across Perth.One or two days at TAFE.Second day in a work

placement (if one day at TAFE per week).

Certificates II ,III ,IV , Diploma.

Some courses are 2 years.

** Students get to use modern equipment and facilities.

AN EXAMPLE COURSE PROVIDER:MOUNT PLEASANT COLLEGE

Students should know the area they want to apply for as they will be participating in the course for 1 or 2 years.

We can only offer the

courses TAFE offer us.

RESEARCH

Work placements are a highlight for all concerned and count towards WACE.

Students may complete 200 – 1000 hours over the two years.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Some students who do well in their placements are offered full time apprenticeships and leave school during the course.

A few start SBT’s, SBA’s while at school.

WORK PLACEMENTS

TAFE is Industry driven so your employment prospects are good.

Your qualification is recognised all around Australia.

At the end of Year 11/12 students will have a huge advantage over other students looking for work, TAFE entry or going to University without an ATAR.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Certificate IV = ATAR 70Diploma = ATAR 84

Currently 39 Year 11’s and 34 Year 12’s involved.

ATAR English, ‘A’ in General or ‘STAT’ test.

Check university websites for requirements.

All universities accept but have different criteria for entry.

UNIVERSITY ‘BRIDGING’

Growing in popularity. Cert II, III, IV, Diploma.

ATAR equivalent: 70 or 84. Business, I.T. Community Services, Education, Health Science,

Music. Media, Film. Parent Payment. Alternative Uni. Entry.

Check the courses in the newsletter (they may change). Get more information on the course - internet. What are you good at? What do you like doing? Do you like working in a team? What are industry shortages? What future pathway will your course offer you? Remember you can only pick what TAFE will offer

schools. You can’t pick a fulltime course.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A COURSE?

HOW TO APPLY

Enrol in six (6) courses for school in 2020 assuming you will be here five days.

If you get into a three-day VET Pathway we will change your timetable. If not you still have the subjects you want.

See Mr Lucas for an interview time.

TAFE decides who is accepted into their courses. They will look at school records especially attendance and behaviour.

In some cases students have a reason for low attendance – you need to talk to Mr Lucas.

TAFE doesn’t accept all applicants.

You may need to apply again in Year 12.

EVERYONE CAN APPLY – BUT….

Include: latest school report; a student statement (why you want to do the course). student “USI”; supporting documentation: resume, references, work experience,

school certificates, sporting certificates, surf lifesaving etc.; Follow the “Application Guide” given to you at the interview with Mr.

Lucas. You can put in several applications (Different TAFEs). Places are limited so your application must be good. If you are late you go on a wait list – it’s hard to get in from there. Only submit copies of documents. Application must on a USB and in Microsoft Word format.

This is a number that every student must have to enrol in TAFE.

Log on to the website, use your Medicare number and create a USI.

Record your USI and Password for future use. You must hand in a screen-shot of your USI with your

application or it won’t be accepted. P45TDOCKER

USI: UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER

Students who are successful in an application for a course in the Construction Industry will be notified and then they must complete a “White Card”.

Details of how to do this will be given to you if you are successful and the White Card brought to school at the start of 2020.

Without the White Card you cannot access building sites as part of work placement so you won’t be included in the course.

CONSTRUCTION STUDENTS

It will depend on the TAFE and the course. TAFE will contact you directly. Your email address must be accurate and is one that is checked.Make sure your contact information on the application forms is correct.By the end of Term 4 we will know – some will know earlier.

WHEN DO I FIND OUT?

Students can change back to six ‘normal’ courses during Term 1 (early) or at the start of Semester 2.

Students can complete Year 11 in the VET Transition Pathways group then swap over to six courses at school for Year 12.

Apply for a different TAFE course for Year 12 – these are very limited.

Your school WACE is still our main concern!
