PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION (PVD)To produce a controlled color surface treatment PVD uses a physical process (heating and sputtering) to produce a metallic vapor which is then deposited in a vacuum chamber on a target surface or object.

PVD is utilized in a wide array of items demanding enhanced surface properties and aesthetics. While primarily utilized in architectural, tooling, plumbing and medical applications, the range of use continues to expand as demand for added capacities and range of color grows. KloecknerTM and Double Stone SteelTM PVD offers the broadest range of color, texture, finish and dimension in the industry. Typical PVD coating compounds include titanium nitride, chromium and zirconium nitride.

A broad array of steel-treated hues are born from our intensely innovative physical vapor deposition process (PVD), creating stunning metallic surfaces up to 10 times the hardness of conventional stainless steel. This technique combines metal ions with precise heat in a controlled pressurized activation environment. The end result is a newer, radiantly colorful and functional metal form, easy to bend and fabricate without cracking or crazing. The process is often copied but hard to replicate (because perfection should be hard).

EXCEPTIONAL WEAR, SCRATCH AND CORROSION RESISTANCEThe KloecknerTM and Double Stone SteelTM PVD line is a bold and revolutionary step forward for colored stainless steel. Brilliant color is created through the PVD process, which amplifies and improves the performance of stainless steel by increasing wear, scratch and corrosion resistance. The surface treatment is unlike paint or plating, so allowances for sizing, clearances and holes are a non-issue. The surface is far more durable than the untreated base metal, and often superior to conventional coating methods such as electroplating or powder-coating. The PVD surface will never flake or peel, and is bonded to the surface at the micron level. It’s the little things that count, right?

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLYPVD is a go-to design choice because of its low environmental impact. Compared to other processes such as electroplating and painting, PVD is far friendlier — with zero discharge of noxious gas, no waste-water pollution, and no harmful emissions. Plus, the stainless steel material used for PVD is at least 60% recycled (and is 100% recyclable). The KloecknerTM and Double Stone SteelTM PVD line not only looks exceptional; it feels pretty good, too.

The KloecknerTM and Double Stone SteelTM PVD line is available in a variety of forms, finishes and surfaces, including standard sheets, tubes, bars and more in the gauges and grades you require.* We have the materials and processing capability necessary to help you craft the perfect statement, easily. Rails glide, trims pop, and walls stun with PVD.

*Standard sheet sizes stock at 48 x 120 with a maximum size of 60 x 240. standard gauges range from 10 ga - 24 ga, with other custom sizes quoted on application. Tubing and bar shapes colored up to 12 ft long for railing,framing, trims and similar end-use requirements. Stainless plate finishing is subject to the size and weight psf. Your Kloeckner sales representative will help you complete each order to your exact specifications.

**Assumes recommended bend radii for the specific grade, temper and thickness.

***For base metal, exteriors type t316 or type t444 is highly recommended. For interiors t300 series stainless is typically recommended, and at times 200 or 400 series are suitable as specified on part prints.

Our PVD is easy to form and fabricate with no crazing or deformation on the bend radii.**

PVD is easy to laser cut with flawless results. For your delivery, PVC protective film is applied to all finished sheet surfaces to your specification. Fabricated parts and panels packaged and shipped to prevent damage in transit and install

PVD surfacing can be applied to all grades of stainless steel, but types 304 and 316 are the most common. Aluminium extrusions can also be easily colored with PVD.***

Brilliant. It’s simply the best word to describe our PVD color in its natural environment. Offered in a wide range of amazing colors, textures, and finishes, our offering complements any design and function. Sometimes, it can even steal the show.

KloecknerTM and Double Stone SteelTM PVD is available with a wide range of finishes, including brushed, hairline, commercial polish #3 and #4, mirror #7, Mirror non-directional, #8 finish. Numerous textures and looks are available in a wide range of substrate patterns.

Certain colors and compounds are extremely heat resistant and suitable in some cases to exposures exceeding 600 degrees F without surface degradation*.

PVD can be spec’d to meet your exact end use specifications — including, post-part toll coloring. Complete in house part fabrication and post coloring is available as well.

*Custom engineered high temp applications are possible on a case by case basis

Versatile Product CapabilitiesPVD can be applied to a wide range of metals but usually is applied to stainless steel given superior finishing characteristics. Virtually any grade is suitable for PVD with T304, T316 and T430 the predominant grades utilized in various finishes/colors. T316 is recommended for outdoor use.

PVD can be easily folded, formed and laser cut without affecting the color. While the product will easily weld consistent with the base metal used, special care must be taken to conceal significant welds as color will not blend.

All PVD is supplied with protective plastic film to prevent handling and transit damage.Laser and conventional films available in numerous brands to spec.

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE.Kloeckner is one of the largest, most diverse independent metals distribution and processing organizations in the world. The product line includes nearly every grade, size, alloy, shape and chemistry in stainless, aluminum and carbon steel.

Product forms include sheets, coils, plate, bar, tube, pipe and shapes. Expanded metal, embossed finishes, perforated and other niche commodities are common to the mix.

Incorporated in Hong Kong, Double Stone Steel Ltd (or DSS) was founded on the principles of foresight, innovation, research and design — coupled with lateral thinking, and an auspicious devotion to advancing PVD worldwide.

In 1994, Double Stone Steel opened in Panyu, China for the production of colored stainless steel, specifically for use in interior decor. DSS quickly rose in prominence to become the largest decorative PVD coloring company in the world.

In 2014, Kloeckner and Double Stone Steel met to review potential synergies given Double Stone Steel’s prominence in the architectural arena and Kloeckner’s desire to expand in this space. Further, Kloeckner’s global position, logistical reach and penetration into key industrial segments dovetailed with Double Stone Steel’s strategies to expand the use for PVD.

In very short order, a supply agreement and technology sharing program were created to market PVD and related products exclusively through Kloeckner in North and South America. This initial agreement paved the way for operating plant arrangements to bring PVD to market at defined Kloeckner sites throughout North America. Truly the relationship has evolved into a mutually beneficial opportunity for both partners.
